1 Providence Theological Seminary CP 5201C Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy Professor: Rolf R. Nolasco, Jr., ThD in Pastoral Psychology Fall 2014 Somewhere we know that without silence words lose their meaning, that without listening speaking no longer heals, that without distance closeness cannot cure Henri Nouwen COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course Syllabus This course is an introduction to various approaches to and theories and practices of psychotherapy and counseling. It also examines the critical role of neuroscience in enhancing positive therapeutic outcomes. Students will also develop skills associated with the process of case conceptualization and the analytic appraisal of the presuppositions underlying the therapies. COURSE OUTCOMES: Students will be able to Differentiate major streams of counseling and psychotherapy that are currently in use in clinical settings. Articulate major theories from which contemporary psychotherapies are derived: their theory of personality, theory of psychopathology, understanding of the therapeutic relationship, process, goals and outcomes. Integrate advances in neuroscience in the theory and practice of counseling and psychotherapy Demonstrate critical skills for using and evaluating these approaches and methodologies psychologically and theologically. Identify the broad array of psychotherapeutic approaches and procedure and pursue further study and/or training should students desire professional levels of competence needed to utilize these in their clinical work with clients. REQUIRED TEXTS: Badenoch, Bonnie. (2008) Being a Brain-Wise Therapist: A Practical Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology. New York: W.W. Norton Corey, Gerald. (2012). Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy. Kentucky: Cengage Learning. Corey, Gerald (2013). Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy DVD- ROM: Case of Stan and Lecturettes. Kentucky: Cengage Learning. (Please contact CENGAGE directly to order the DVD at ) NOTE: MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A COPY OF THE ABOVE DVD.
2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Read assigned sections of the text. 2. In Class Case Summary Report: Every session students will be required to complete a case summary report (see attached document) for a fictitious client utilizing theories of psychotherapy covered in class. 3. In Class Presentation of a particular counseling model Provide a summary of the model assigned to the group (theorist, theory of personality, theory of psychopathology, theory of change--techniques) Provide a Christian appraisal of the model. Present a simulated counseling using the above approach to psychotherapy. Models of Psychotherapy Deep Brain Stimulation (for depression) Solution-Focused Therapy Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Acceptance Commitment Therapy Dialectical Behavior Therapy In Class presentation will start on Wednesday, October 8, ESSAY #1 (15-20 pages) DUE: December 19, 2014 Watch the movie Helen (2009) and then conceptualize the case using THREE theoretical perspectives covered in class (Note: An Integrative Psychotherapy can be used as one of the three perspectives. Just make sure that you explicitly identify which of these theories you are integrating). Describe and compare how each theoretical perspective would conceptualize the client s difficulties, key issues would likely to be addressed in therapy from each perspective, accompanying therapeutic goals and intervention strategies. Discuss strengths and weaknesses of each theory in addressing the client s problems Choose which theoretical frame you believe would best fit the client and support your choice Use Corey and Badenoch as primary resources for this essay but you are also encouraged to consult others texts as well. Note: Your primary client is Helen played by the actress Ashley Judd. Your conceptualization should focus on information provided by the movie. However, your treatment plan should START post-ect treatment (or after the ending of the movie) while taking into consideration her history as depicted in the movie.
3 Follow the link to get access to the movie: If unable to, you may need to rent the movie from Netflix or itunes. 5. ESSAY #2 (10-12 pages) DUE: December 19, 2014 Articulate your own evolving INTEGRATIVE theoretical orientation to counseling. Consider the following: a. Theory of Personality: What are your basic assumptions about human nature? b. Theory of Psychopathology: How do symptoms or problematic behavior develop? c. Theory of Therapeutic Relationship: What role does therapeutic relationship and understanding of brain science play in facilitating change? d. Theory of Therapeutic Process: What do you consider to be the most important therapeutic goals? What procedures will you use with clients to achieve these therapeutic goals? Which theories of psychotherapy and counseling would most guide you in formulating your goals? As a helping agent, how might you facilitate change in client s life? What would you expect of your clients? How do you view the relationship between you and your clients? Be sure to integrate THREE theories of counseling and psychotherapy learned in class into the paper. Explain why this integrative approach best fits you as a counselor.
