According to the LAYNE BIBLE -- John came from Ireland to Dadsville, TN (renamed Victoria 24 sept 1877) about 1785 (this would have made him about 17 years old). This story told to Lounelle by Eria..."the rumor of Uncle Alex and his brothers. Their parents owned slaves and had one slave who stayed and mothered them. She had a baby by one of these boys and was said it was Uncle Alex's. Whether or not who it was she called it Little Alex."
