1 Coleman Family Genealogy Set forth below is what I have on the Coleman family. Unless otherwise noted, the dates were obtained from internet sources and in no way verified. Census data is pretty much from Anne Evans, as is most of the information on William d. Coleman ([email protected]). The information on William D. Coleman is Anne's doing as well. My mother took notes on the wills of Stephen Coleman and Sarah Watson Coleman. I have not verified anything, as this is not my direct line. I write this with the idea that I am providing a starting point for someone interested in the line to look for verification. Kathleen Dawson ([email protected]). 4 May 2009 For additional information see the Caswell County Family Tree: 1. Stephen Coleman m. Sarah Watson 17 Nov 1739 bef 17 Sep May Jan 1836 They married 17 Nov 1761 in Lunenburg Co., VA (or Cumberland Co., VA). She was the daughter of Mathew Watson and Elizabeth of Lunenburg Co., VA. The dates for Stephen and Sarah are taken from their family Bible (source states that, but I have not seen a copy). Stephen s birth date and dates for his son Daniel Coleman and Daniel s wife Anne Payne Harrison are from a family Bible printed in Bulletin of VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society, Vol. III, No. 2 & 3. Stephen lived in Cumberland Co, then he became overseer for Lederdale Quarles in Lunenburg Co. (which later turned into Charlotte Co.). After his father died in 1772, he inherited 400 acres in Pittsylvania Co and lived there until he died. His will was written 22 Sep 1797 and proven in Pittsylvania Co. on 17 Sep 1798 (D&W 11, p. 204). He names his wife Sarah and states that after her demise, his remaining estate is to be divided among his eight children and heirs of his daughter Anney Townes, deceased. He then states that one-ninth of his estate is to go to Elizabeth McDaniel, Stephen Coleman, Patsey Turner, Daniel Coleman, Lucy Price, Judith Turner, Polley Coleman, heirs of daughter Anney Townes, decd, and Thompson Coleman (named in that order). Sarah s will was written 17 Jun 1831 and proven 15 Feb 1836 in Pittsylvania Co., VA (Will Book 1, p. 302). She states that daughter Elizabeth McDaniel has already received the 1/9 share due her from her father s will, so she is excluded from additional inheritance from Sarah s will (Elizabeth and her husband received funds in 1829 and headed west). Sarah then divides her estate into 9 parts, naming Thompson Coleman; Daniel Coleman; Stephen Coleman; lawful heirs of Patsy Turner; grandchildren George, Robert, and Stephen Townes; Lucy Price;

2 - 2 - granddaughter Judith Coleman Harrison; grandchildren Sarah Watson Coleman, Stephen, and Spilsby Coleman; and great grand children Agnes Douglass and Martha Ann Douglass. Daughter Mary Ward is mentioned, but her 1/9 is left to her children Sarah Watson Coleman and Stephen and Spilsby Coleman. I think great grand children Agnes Douglass and Martha Ann Douglass are grandchildren of Elizabeth and Clement McDaniel. a. Elizabeth Coleman m. Clement McDaniel 29 Nov Sep Dec Sep 1836 The married 20 Oct 1779 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Clement was born in Halifax Co., VA, son of William McDaniel and Anne S. The graveyard is located about five miles from the Coleman home on an old road. I have a copy of the transcriptions recorded at that time, which give the dates above, as well as other comments. Coleman (George s wife, Feb 1855 in GA, married 1 year), Lucy R. Coleman (sister, Jul 1844), and a servant Mary L. Miles. VMI Class of 1857: Entered VMI- Feb. 9, 1854; Dismissed Jan. 3, 1855 for pulling a malicious prank on the post sentinel; Reinstated Jan. 15, 1855; Resigned July 1855 due to insufficient funds. Civil War Service: Enlisted Apr. 23, 1861 as 1st Sgt. of Co. A in the 18th Va. Regiment. Appointed Post Master of Danville, Va. and discharged from Army Sept. 28, Even though he was exempt from military service, he tried to get a staff appointment in 1864 and raise a Regiment of Negro troops in Post War Career- Editor and proprietor for the Danville Appeal Newspaper; Managing Editor for the Richmond Enquirer; clerk to State Treasurer. He was arrested and jailed for three years for embezzling State funds while employed by the Treasurer. Date and place of death unknown. IN March, 1874, William D. Coleman was indicted in the Hustings court of the city of Richmond, for that on the 31st of December, 1873, he was secretary of the commissioners of the sinking fund, the said sinking fund having been authorized, &c.; " having acquired possession in some manner and by some means, to the jury unknown, of a certain record, the same then and there being and remaining as a public record of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the office of the second auditor thereof in the capital of said commonwealth, at said city, to wit, the warrant book of the said sinking fund; the said public record, to wit, warrant book of the said sinking fund, then containing an entry in writing in the words, figures, ciphers, and letters following, that is to say : ' 1873, Nov. 11. By warrant No. 7, to Planters' Nat'l Bank, for purchase of $18,100 of Virginia consolidated bonds, $8,190.25,' feloniously did forge the said public record, by then and there feloniously, falsely, and corruptly erasing the figure 1 from the figures and ciphers $18,100, before written in the said public record, which figures, with the sign $ next preceding them, did, before such forgery and erasure, import and signify eighteen thousand one

8 - 8 - hundred dollars; but by reason and means of such forgery and erasure did become, import, and signify eight thousand one hundred dollars, which said false, forged, and altered entry in writing in the public record aforesaid is in the words, figures, ciphers, and letters following, that is to say : '1873, Nov. 11. By warrant No. 7, to Planters' Nat'l Bank, for purchase of $8,100 of Virginia consolidated bonds, $8, ;' with intent to defraud, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of Virginia." Whereas, it appears from an investigation of the records in the Hustings Court clerk's office, of the city of Richmond, that one William D. Coleman, Secretary of the Sinking Fund Commission (the said commissioners of sinking fund being the Auditor of Public Accounts, Second Auditor and Treasurer of Virginia), did at various and sundry times by forgery and other vices defraud, steal and appropriate moneys, bonds, &c., belonging to the Commonwealth of Virginia, amounting to $70,000 or more, to his own use. And, whereas, notwithstanding this large defalcation, theft, &c., and notwithstanding the further fact, the Auditor, Second Auditor and Treasurer were bonded to the State of Virginia in the aggregate of $150,000, to secure the State against just such losses, the said William D. Coleman being in their employ as clerk, is allowed to get away with at least $70,000 of the State's money without any attempt (so far as the records show) on the part of the officials of the Commonwealth to recover one dime from the said sinking fund commissioners or their sureties, through whose office the said William D. Coleman conducted his pilfering schemes; therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Delegates (and the Senate concurring), That the Attorney General of the State of Virginia be, and he 's hereby, requested and directed to ascertain the total amount or amounts of the said public moneys so stolen by the said W. D. Coleman, and the period when the said sums were so stolen, and to institute legal proceedings against the said sinking fund commissioners who held office at the time the said defaulting occurred, or against their heirs at law, sureties, and their legal representatives, as the case may be, to see if the said Commonwealth of Virginia cannot recover, in part or in whole, the said sums of money so stolen to be placed to the credit of the public free schools of the State of Virginia.

9 - 9 - He published a book on his trial, and the trailer read: The author was convicted May 28, 1874, of larceny of State funds while he was secretary to the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund; having completed his prison term of four years, he petitions for a new investigation and trial, alleging the involvement of Joseph Mayo, ex-treasurer of Virginia, in the larceny. The Case of William D. Coleman... By William D Coleman, George D Wise Published by J. H. Foster, 1878, 110 pages In 2004, a compilation of writings on the Civil War was published that included a report by W.D.
