Ephraim Thompson Family in PA and Butler County, Ohio 3rd Edition compiled by his great great great grandson Martin Abrams of Fremont, California 18 January 2011 Ephraim Thompson was born on Nov 29, 1785, according to Bible records from the Thompson 1 and Slayback families 2, possibly in New Jersey 3, although nearly all other records list Pennsylvania. Ephraim s father was probably William Sr. Some reports suggest he was born in 1750 in London Grove in Chester County, PA 4. William Thompson is a very common name and there were two William Thompsons in the PA militia in 1778 in the London Grove Company 5, both privates. Ephraim s mother is unknown, although William Sr left a widow when he died in Butler County in Unfortunately there is no documented proof relating Ephraim to William Sr or his other sons. Ephraim can be linked to William through naming patterns of this family, the relationship to the Slayback family, his inclusion in a Thompson Bible, the geographic proximities in both southwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern Ohio and many burials of the various branches of the Thompson family at Rose Hill cemetery in Mason, Ohio. Assuming the connection of Ephraim to William Sr is valid, there were several brothers who traveled from Pennsylvania to Butler and Warren Counties in Ohio. The first to arrive in Butler County was James Thompson in 1797, who married Ann. There was also Aaron Thompson Sr 6, who married Jane Lee, and William Thompson Jr 7, who married Elizabeth Blackford and Joseph Thompson 8. There were 11 Thompsons or Thomsons on the 1807 Butler County, OH census 9, including James, Joseph, Aaron (Aron) and two Williams, mostly in Liberty Township. A sister, Hannah Thompson (John Eddingfield) also lived in 10 Butler County. An 1810 tax list for Butler County included a James Tompson and a William Thompson, Jun. 11 On November 7, , Ephraim married Anne Slayback, in Butler County, Ohio. Naming patterns seem particularly important since William Jr (Elizabeth Blackford) named a son Ephraim (see below), a nephew to Ephraim, the main subject of this narrative. named a son William and a daughter Eliza. Ephraim also
Slaybacks Anne Slayback was born on January 18 th, 1787 in New Jersey, probably near Trenton. Her parents were John David Slayback and Diana Bergin 13. Her grandfather was David (Dewald) Slayback. The Slaybacks are a confusing family to trace because their given names are often repeated, particularly the names of her brothers John, David, and Abel. Anne s brother David may have been the D Slayback who was one line above them in the 1820 Warren county Deerfield census 14. Four lines below Ephraim and Ann was a J Slayback. Married in Butler County 15 on the same day of November 7, 1816 as Anne and Ephraim, were David Slayback, a first cousin, and Sarah Peck. Ann and Ephraim were married by the Rev D Layman, and David and Sarah by the JP, J. Gaston, so it probably was not a double ceremony. This David is not the D Slayback found on the 1820 Deerfield census as there were many Slayback and Peck children and D Slayback was younger with a smaller family. This David Slayback was the son of Solomon Slayback (Sarah Hoagland), a brother of John David Slayback. There were two Slayback and Kendall marriages in Warren County. Diana Slayback married a William Kindall in and she might be Anne s sister Dinah. Two years earlier, John Slayback married Susan Kendall in and he is probably the J Slayback below Ann and Ephraim on the 1820 census. John is likely the John D Slayback in the 1830 census 18 and a constable from 1826 to He was also in the 1840 census and the 1850 Mortality census 20 with his life listed as 1790 to This would conflict with the 1820 census where he was born from 1794 to He may be the son of her uncle Abel Slayback and Guittee Fisher, who had a son John, born about Her cousin Abel Slayback also went to Ohio and became a prominent physician in Cincinnati 22 and was the grandfather of the Civil War general (CSA), Alonzo W Slayback. In addition to Ephraim and Ann there were several other Thompson and Slayback marriages. Aaron s son, Aaron Jr married Eleanor Slayback 23. William Jr s daughter, Sarah, married Abel Slayback 24 (b1798), Anne s cousin (not her brother, b1778). Aaron Sr s son John Lee, married Ellen Conover 25, whose mother (Eve) was a sister of Abel Slayback (1798). All six are buried in Rose Hill cemetery near Ephraim. Although it s impossible to know, presumably Ephraim and Anne named their five sons after family members. William is the name of Ephraim s father and brother. Abel, George, and John are names of Anne s brothers. Firmen, aka Forman, probably got his name from the same source as George Slayback s son, Forman Slayback 26. (Forman Slayback named a daughter Ann and a son Ephraim) 27
Census of 1810 and 1820 It is difficult to unequivocally sort the Thompsons from Fayette County, Pennsylvania from the Thompsons from Butler and Warren Counties in Ohio. There may be other Thompsons, related or unrelated with the same given names, or some of the Thompson family may have gone back and forth before permanently settling in Ohio. An Ephraim Thompson is located on the 1810 census in Bullskin, Fayette County, Pennsylvania 28. This is probably not the son of William Sr, despite a strong similarity. This Ephraim is recorded at 25 or older. If the census is interpreted strictly, this would tend to rule out Ephraim, son of William Sr, who was still only 24. Aaron Sr. was also in the Redstone Township of Fayette County of Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. According to the Beer s History of Warren County, his son John Lee Thompson was born in Redstone in 1804 and the family moved to Ohio in There is also an Aaron Thompson listed in the 1810 census of Washington Township of Fayette County, PA 30. This Aaron had a large family of 8 children, which is consistent with Aaron Sr s family, which has been reported as large as 20 kids. This may be another Aaron, since this conflicts with the 1807 Butler County census and the information in the Beers History. In the census, an E Thompson was listed in Deerfield twp in Warren County, Ohio. This is most certainly Ephraim as the line above Ephraim was D Slayback and four lines below was J Slayback. D Slayback was most likely Ann s brother and J Slayback was Ann s cousin. An Ephraim Thompson was also located in 1820 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania 32 in the Dunbar twp. This is probably the Ephraim who was in Bullskin in Census Fayette, PA Warren, OH Expected Person (age) Able Ephr 34 Eliza Anne Ag Both records show more than the expected family members, which might include other relatives, laborers or servants. The Warren census has a better age for Ephraim himself, and is more consistent with his marriage in 1816 in Butler County. It s quite probable that the 1810 and 1820 census listings in Fayette County represent a different Ephraim, perhaps a relative. The only certain record of Ephraim at that time was his marriage in 1816 in Butler County. In the 1807 Butler county census, one of the Williams, living in Liberty Township, was listed with two males over 21 in his household, William and possibly Ephraim, who would have been about 22. Unfortunately, there are no existing 1810 Ohio census records to corroborate or dispute this conclusion.
Butler County Thompsons In the 1820 census for Butler County 33, Aaron Thompson is found in Liberty Township (with nine children under the age of 16). William Thompson (age 45+) is also found in Liberty twp. There is a James Thomson (45+) in Liberty Township. There are several other Thompsons/Thomsons in the county, including some in Liberty Township. They may have been living in the southern part of Liberty Twp, which became Union Township in 1823 (now known as West Chester Township). In 1830, Aaron, James and William again appear, although this time in the newer Union township 34. They are of the right age. There are many other Thompsons (but no Thomsons) in Union, Liberty and other townships. In the 1836 McBride s Butler County maps 35, several Thompsons are listed, particularly in the southern half of Union Township. James Thompson (section 27) and William Thompson (section 15) have over 100 acres each, adjoining Thompson Creek. Nearby are John Thompson (probably a son of William Jr) and Abel Slayback (cousin?) and several Conovers, a name that is associated with Thompsons and Slayback. They were also listed in McBride s 1834 appraisals 36 of Butler County. Most of Ephraim s brothers passed away in the 1840s, although the actual dates are not usually known. The 1840 census 37 includes an Aaron in the Union township but he was only years old, so he might be Aaron Jr. There is only one Joseph, but his age is in his 30s. There are numerous James and Williams, in Union, Liberty and other townships. One James is and lives in the Union Township. There is a William Thompson who lives in Union Township and was Joseph probably passed away in His will was probated on July Interestingly, he specifically gave Aaron $75 and William a house in Palmyra (Mason, Warren County) for trouble he caused while living with them. William was the executor.
Aaron passed away around 1840, most likely before the census data of June 1. His will was probated on September Executors included William and Aaron s second wife Julia. James was a witness as was his brother-in-law, John Eddingfield, husband of Hannah Thompson. James estate was inventoried on September 23, A later inventory mentions his widow Ann, a grandson James DeCamp Thompson, Aaron (probably a son of James born in 1808), a Mark Thompson, and a M. A. Thompson. William died on May 7 th, 1848 according to his tombstone in the Muddy Creek (Keltner) 41 Cemetery, which is just over the county line into Warren County. There are five other Thompsons in this cemetery, including a Joseph who died on January 7 th, 1840 but it s difficult to ascertain any relationships to William.
Ephraim in Warren County, OH Ephraim is found on several property transactions or tax lists 42 in Warren County, Ohio in 1827, 1830, 1832 and Ephraim was a relatively affluent farmer, with 105 acres and 2 to 4 horses, which was more than the norm for his neighbors. The 105 acres was located at Range 2 North Township 4 Section 33 in the southwest corner of Deerfield Township, very near the Butler County border. (In 1867, eldest son Abel S Thompson was living on 89 2/3 acres at the same section, probably Ephraim s original property 43.) A deed exists for 1832 in which Ephraim and Anne sell some property (approximately one acre) to Joel S. Enyart for $25. Ephraim and Anne both made a mark for their signature 44. He was on the , and Warren County censuses. In the 1850 census, he was living with sons, John and George, and next door to son Abel S and his wife Mary (whose Bible contained extensive information) 2. Anne Slayback died on December 25, Ephraim and Anne had 6 known children 47, a daughter, Eliza, followed by 5 sons. Eliza married Aaron Scull 26. William B, Firmen, and Abel S lived their entire lives in Warren County or nearby. George 48 is last seen in the 1870 census and John in the 1850 census although with their common names, they could have moved somewhere else and just be untraceable. See the chart at the end of the document. George W married Margaret (Maggie) and had a son Charles Grant who died in 1864 and is buried near Ephraim. In 1870, he and Maggie were living in the Deerfield Twp and had a son named George Warren who was two months old. 49 After the 1870 census, neither George or Margaret or the son George can be located. There is another George W Thompson ( ) buried at Rose Hill but he was the son of Emmanuel Thompson, son of Aaron Jr and Eleanor Slayback. 50
Later Years Ephraim married Charlotte Turner on Jan 1, They had one daughter, Ruth Ann, born in December In 1850, Charlotte, age 43, was living separately in Lebanon in the Turtle Creek Township 53 with her two older Turner daughters, Jane and Sarah, and Ephraim s daughter, Ruth Ann. Charlotte and the two older daughters were born in England. Ephraim passed away on July 15, He was buried at the Pigsah cemetery but reinterred at Rose Hill cemetery in 1897, next to Anne. 54 A guardianship 55 for Ruth Ann, age 7, was granted on Aug to William Monfort. William Monfort was married to Sarah Turner, Ruth s half-sister. (For some reason, Ruth Ann was not returned to her mother.) Ruth Ann was still with the Monforts in In 1870, she was living with her mother Charlotte Hornady 57. Charlotte Hornady died in Ruth Ann Ruhr died on May 30, 1932 in Lebanon, Warren County. Her death certificate listed her birth as Dec 9 th, 1846 and her parents as Ephraim Thompson and Charlotte Bundy (sic). 59 She was the last surviving child of Ephraim Thompson. Ruth, Charlotte, William Monfort and other family members were buried in the Ruhr/Monfort section at the Lebanon cemetery in Turtle Creek Twp. 60 William Thompson, Ephraim s likely brother, named one of his sons, Ephraim 5. This Ephraim was born in 1817 in Ohio. He lived most of his early life in Butler County. In the 1850 census, he is living in the Union Township of Butler County 61, with wife Sarah, several children, and mother Elizabeth (Blackford), age 76, originally from NJ. Nearby is Enoch Slayback 19, a cousin of Anne Slayback Thompson. An unrelated Ephraim Thompson 62 also lived in the Washington Township of Warren County from about 1860 until his death in His parents were John W, whose parents were from North Carolina, and Elizabeth Strong. Ephraim and Anne are buried at the Rose Hill cemetery 64 in Mason, Warren County, Ohio, next to their daughter Eliza Scull. Also buried nearby in the same cemetery are his sons Firmen, William B, Abel S, several grandchildren and many other Thompson, Slayback and Scull relatives.

DNA search Efforts to find male descendents of Ephraim Thompson have been unsuccessful. Abel William B Forman John George L/W three sons George M -1 daughter, John W- two daughters, Kinsey ( ) single no sons, two daughters two sons Benton - 1 daughter Frank (1854 after 1910), married to Hallie in the 1890s, divorced 1898, no children 65 unknown after 1850 (Best fit 1870 Harrison, Delaware, Indiana) son George W, b1870, unknown after 1870, infant Charles Grant d1864 Even though Ephraim had 5 sons and at least 7 grandsons, no Thompson great grandsons are known. At present, it appears there are no Thompson surname descendents of Ephraim. DNA tests have been submitted for descendents of Aaron Thompson Sr., likely brother of Ephraim. There is a 37-marker test from FTDNA listed at the Thompson DNA project (S-12) 66. There are three more Aaron Thompson tests at Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation 67. Two match 26/26 with similar markers to S-12. A third one matches 19/20 to S-12. However, all four of the testers are closely related and derive from the same grandson of Aaron, Emmanuel Edwin Thompson (1843, Mason, Warren County, OH 1924 Bingham, ID). S-12 and the first two tests also descend from the same son of Emmanuel, John Edwin. The fourth test, 19/20, is from a different son of Emmanuel, Ralph Marion. So while these tests results are extremely close, they can only be regarded as absolute tests for Emmanuel. They are probably a valid test for Aaron but that cannot be assumed. Further tests from different sons of Aaron Sr need to be entered. Better yet, the tester should descend from one of his brothers such as William Jr, James or in the unlikely chance, Ephraim.
