What is a Sports camp? This idea is directly borrowed from the multitude of private sports camps and sports schools that operate at commercial facilities and at numerous colleges and universities in North America and at a few tertiary institutions in Australia where they are extremely successful. Specialised sports camps develop high levels of athletic skills in a single sport. Sports Camps will also involve classroom and laboratory work in a variety of active living topics such as diet/nutrition, rules/ game plans, strength training and fitness. The concept is more than just a holiday program with five main objectives: 1. Skill acquisition and refinement in a single or multiple sports/activities 2. Developing lifestyle awareness and the importance of Active Living 3. Improving individual health and fitness levels 4. An emphasis on social interaction and the development of leadership, communication and teamwork skills 5. Promoting fun and enjoyment How is it run? Victoria University will run full-day, one-week sessions of the Sports Camps commencing Monday 9th and Monday 16th January 2017. Staff and students from the College of Sport and Exercise Science will act as instructors for the program. The daily program will consist of a mixture of sport time and lecture work on a variety of topics as well as daily swims. The students will be divided into appropriate age levels and there will be variations to the program according to age. For example, each age category will have a daily fitness session. For the older groups this may include instruction in weight training whereas the younger age levels may do fitness games or aerobics. All students on a weekly registration will be provided with a Victoria University Sports Camps T-shirt, a Certificate of Completion, relevant notes and handouts, product samples from sponsors and a commitment to a high level of instruction by qualified staff. Victoria University Sports Camps - January 2017 4
What to bring? All participants should wear comfortable clothes, including shorts, T-shirt and running shoes suitable for physical activity as well as bathers and a towel everyday for the swims. For cooler days, a sweatshirt would be beneficial. A hat/cap must be worn outdoors to shade heads from the sun along with sunscreen or sunblock. NO HAT, NO PLAY! A plastic water bottle is recommended to help replenish water loss experienced by physical activity in warm weather. Some activities may require the use of specialised sport equipment or apparel, e.g. soccer, tennis and swimming. Exact requirements will be detailed on an information sheet posted with your receipt upon registration. Children will need to supply their own lunch, drinks and snacks, or purchase these from the cafeteria. Where is camp? The program will take place in the very impressive facilities of the Footscray Park Campus of Victoria University. The main focal point will be the Victoria University Aquatic and Fitness Centre, which has Sports Halls, a Strength and Conditioning Fitness Centre, Aerobics/Dance/Drama Studios, multi-purpose room and swimming pool as well as outdoor ovals and tennis courts.
