1 MAKE A SPLASH Fall Swim Lessons ISLANDS FAMILY YMCA The Islands YMCA is proud to offer the lesson of a lifetime by teaching swimming skills! During the fall/winter we will be offering Private Swim lessons so that you can schedule times for that are convenient for your family. All Ages All Skill Levels LOCATION: ISLANDS FAMILY YMCA 66 Johnny Mercer Blvd Savannah, GA (912) CONTACT: LEAH BOYD, FITNESS & AQUATICS DIRECTOR leah.boyd@ymcaofcoastalga.org
2 Welcome to the Islands YMCA Aquatic Program! We look forward to working with you and your child throughout this summer and hopefully many more to come! We know there are many choices when it comes to swim lessons and we thank you for choosing the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. The following information will help you understand the procedures and policies regarding swim lessons. A careful reading will answer many questions and help you prepare for your time in swim lessons. Together, we can work to give you a positive growing experience that will last a lifetime. I m looking forward to a wonderful summer! Thanks, Leah Boyd Fitness & Aquatics Director Please get a pool brochure from the front desk so you are aware of our policies It is full of great information! Please be sure your child has showered & used the bathroom prior to entering the pool area. Please inform the instructor about any circumstances in your child s life that may affect his/her performance in the lesson. Classes begin right on time, so please plan to arrive a few minutes early. There are always lifeguards on duty. If you hear them blow their whistle or make an announcement, please stop & listen. Your child s class will meet in the small pool each time. Your child will have the same instructor each class. When the swim class starts, please take a seat. Some children may learn more when the parent is not around. This helps your child concentrate on the class & the instructor. PROGRESSION Children will receive a progress report on the last class of the session. Our swim program is a progressive one. Each child will progress at his/her own rate. It may be necessary for them to repeat the same level before going on. This is not an indication a child is slow. The levels are not designed for children to pass through quickly. It is common to stay in one level anywhere from 2-4 sessions. Usually by the 4 th class the instructor will be able to give you an indication of where your child will be by the end of the session. CLASS CANCELLATIONS In the instance of Inclement Weather a makeup day will be scheduled for each day cancelled. If a minimum for a class is not met within 3 days of the 1 st class, the class will be cancelled & you will receive a voucher to use at the Islands YMCA. If your child misses 2 or more lessons from a group session you will be offered the option to withdraw from that class & join another. If you need cancel a private or semi-private lesson you will get a voucher for the Islands YMCA if you cancel 24 hours or more ahead of your scheduled lesson. If you cancel in less than 24 hours you will still be responsible for the full amount of the lesson.
3 ITEMS NEEDED FOR SWIM LESSONS The following items are needed to ensure that your swimmer will have a fun-filled lesson. Please label belongings with a permanent marker: Cap or Hat Sunscreen Swimsuit/Swim shirt/trunks Towel Extra change of clothes (if desired) Plastic Bag (for wet items after swimming) Water bottle VALUABLES/LOST AND FOUND Do not bring ANY items of value such as, but not limited to, cell phones, IPods, CD players, CDs, DVDs, Handheld games, Trading Cards, toys, movies, etc. There will be a designated area for Lost and Found. Please check this daily. Unclaimed items will be donated on a bi-weekly basis. The YMCA will not be responsible for the loss of valuables or personal property items ILLNESS/HEALTH When a swimmer is ill for any reason, please do not attend swim lessons. It is our policy not to accept swimmers when any communicable disease is present. This is a preventive measure to protect the other swimmers. We ask that you do not enter the pool if there are signs of: Fever, Frequent or Severe Pain, Frequent Coughing, Conjunctivitis, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Lice, etc. Swimmers with Communicable Diseases, such as, but not limited to Strep Throat, Chicken Pox, Flu, Ringworm, etc, must also be kept at home but the YMCA must be notified immediately, so that other participants can be notified of exposure. MEDICAL TREATMENT STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES The YMCA OF Coastal Georgia is committed to providing your child with a safe and healthy experience. Our staff is CPR and First Aid Certified. We will contact the parent, legal guardian and/or emergency contact immediately should care be given and/or the services of physicians be required. DISCIPLINE POLICY A swimmer s behavior is a great concern to us. We expect all swimmers to respect, listen to and follow the staff s instruction. We also expect our staff to treat the swimmers based on the character values of caring, respect, responsibility, honesty, and faith. IMPORTANT: Any act that could be considered dangerous to swimmers or staff is grounds for immediate suspension/dismissal. Just as we expect the staff to treat parents with dignity and respect, we expect the parents to treat the staff with the same manner.
4 How can I help my child learn to swim? BE POSITIVE: Swimming is fun and is a life-time sport. Provide positive reinforcement. ENCOURAGE: Children may not understand or have the coordination to perfect a skill. Ask questions, see if they understand the concepts & let us know if we need to approach a particular skill in a different way! Try not to make comparisons to other children. Each child will progress at a rate that is uniquely his/her own PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE: As in every new skill we learn throughout our lives practice is required to be proficient and successful. Repeat key words & phrases that the instructor used. Let your child show off their new skills! Also, review the safety tips learned in class. HAVE FUN: Interact with your child. Get into the water with them and encourage them to reach new goals each time. Show your child how much fun you are having in the water too! They can learn by watching the best example they know YOU! TAKE THEM TO A SWIM MEET: Show your child other children who are proficient in swimming so they know it s possible! Most children have a wonderful time at swim meets a positive thing to do! INSTRUCTOR CONFERENCES: Don t talk to your child s instructor in front of the child, especially if you have a major concern. Children listen to everything we discuss & sometimes misinterpret what we say. We want your child to know how wonderful they are doing! We can find something great they did during class even if it s just putting their toes in the water for the first time! Thank you for joining us at the Islands YMCA!
