2. Cognates (Salitang Magka-uri) Direction: Cognates are words that look alike and have similar meanings in English and Filipino. You will usually be able to guess the meaning of cognates easily. Becoming skilled at recognizing cognates will help you understand what you read and increase your vocabulary. Here are some cognates that are used in the reading. Ang mga prayle ang may pinakamalaking puhunan at pakinabang sa kalakalang galeon. Sa pamamagitan ng kalakalang galeon ay nasolo ng Espanya ang Pilipinas. Masayang-masaya sa Maynila tuwing darating ang galeon mula sa Acapulco, Mehiko. Tuluyan nang namatay ang kalakalang galeon nang magsimula ang rebolusyon sa Mehiko. Naging problema ang mga Olandes at mga pirata. Pagpasok ng ika-19 siglo, humina ang kalakalang galeon. Ang galeon ay may dalang rekado at ginto bilang regalo kay Haring Felipe II. 21
