What is the Capstne? The Capstne is a 6 credit independent MPH curse requirement that cnsist f a Field Experience and a Prject. 1. The Field Experience is 150 hurs f public health real-wrld field wrk. Examples f field experience: Wrk with the Miami Dade Cunty Health Department t understand the agency s peratins. Wrk with the (WIC) Wmen, Infant and Children nutritin prgram at Jacksn Memrial Hspital t cmprehend the prgrams ffered t the cmmunity. Wrk with prject Medishare in Haiti t examine the cmmunity health wrker system in the Central Plateau. 2. The Prject is a reprt illustrating a public health prject that is carried ut by the student fllwing the field experience. Examples f Prjects include: Prgram Develpment: Design a health prmtin prgram r interventin that culd be implemented at the field experience site, including instructins, prcedures, manuals and materials. Prgram Evaluatin: Cnducting a frmal evaluatin f an existing prgram r interventin at the field experience site t evaluate effectiveness and utcmes. Prgram Implementatin: Participates in a substantive way twards the implementatin f a prgram r interventin already planned at the field experience site. Research: Research the rigin f a health prblem identified by the field experience site; a systematic investigatin including research develpment, testing, and evaluatin. Health Plicy/Advcacy: Develp a health plicy psitin paper related t the missin f the field experience site, and advcate fr its apprval Other Capstne Prjects culd invlve data analysis and reprting; survey research; cmmunity assessments and ther prject types. Prerequisite: Students must take 9 MPH credits befre registering fr the Capstne Experience. Capstne Field Experience (EPH680) The Capstne Field Experience is designed t prvide students with real wrld wrk experience in the field f public health. This experience places students in health-related settings (lcal, natinal, and internatinal) t wrk n prjects f mutual interest t bth the field rganizatin and the student. 1. Identify Interests Discuss public health interests and netwrk with faculty members, MPH staff, fellw students and ptential sites. Align yur public health interests with yur future career gals t determine: what ppulatin t wrk with and area f public health t engage in fr yur capstne. 2. Meet with the Capstne Manager Review the requirements fr cmpleting the Capstne Experience. Brainstrm ideas and interests, and t cnnect with ptential Cmmunity Partners. This shuld be dne ne semester befre prpsed start date. The Capstne Manager will assign yu t a Capstne Faculty Advisr. 3. Identify a Cmmunity Partner/Preceptr The Cmmunity Partner/Preceptr is a public health prfessinal in an rganizatin r a UM Faculty member invlved in cmmunity prjects where the student will cmplete his/her Field Experience and will help the student bridge the gap between training and practice. Rle f the Cmmunity Partner/Preceptr a. Supervises the student and signs ff n cmmunity partner agreement and 150 field hurs. b. Supervises student s tasks and activities that will meet capstne learning bjectives. c. Benefits frm the student s participatin in the rganizatin s wrk. Nte: During the Field Experience, visits by the Capstne Supervisr may ccur if deemed necessary r beneficial by the student, by the Cmmunity Partner r by ther Graduate Prgrams Administratin. 4. Meet with the Capstne Faculty Advisr (CFA) Hlds a faculty appintment in the Department f Public Health Sciences r Department f Medicine (MD/MPH). Apprves yur all dcuments: Cmmunity Partner Agreement, Field Experience Prpsal, Field Experience Reprt, Capstne Prject Prpsal and Prject Reprt. Establishes timelines with students fr cmpletin f capstne wrk. Maintains regular cntact with the Capstne Manager and student thrughut their Capstne Experience. B. Capstne Prject (EPH681) The Capstne Prject is geared tward prviding the student with an pprtunity t apply public health field wrk, academic thery and acquired skills t cmmunity health prblems. Students are encuraged t build their Capstne Experience in such a way that supprts their academic and prfessinal interests as they advance in their careers as public health prfessinals. 1. Identify a Prject Tpic and Apprach Tpic and apprach fr the Capstne Prject must be apprved by the Faculty Advisr and must maintain a brad public health cntext. 2. Meet with Capstne Faculty Advisr Draft a Capstne Prject Prpsal (see Appendix F) Determine if IRB apprval is needed. Prcess shuld be dne tw mnths befre beginning yur field experience r a semester befre intended cmpletin f field experience. Cnsult with CFA fr IRB guidance. If IRB is needed and btained, submit apprval t Capstne Manager. Obtain apprval f Final Capstne Prject Prpsal. Establish timelines fr cmpleting Capstne Prject. 3. This prpsal is submitted t the Capstne Supervisr alng with the signed Cmmunity Partner Agreement. The student and the Cmmunity Partner then ascertain the type f activities that the agency will be able t prvide fr the student t meet their bjectives. This dcument serves as an verview f hw the student will gain an understanding f a public health agency, its prgrams, the ppulatin it serves, and ptential prjects. The agency s Office f HIV/AIDS is the largest cunty HIV/AIDS health department in the state f Flrida. They prvide a variety f prgrams that range frm preventin and health educatin t surveillance and patient care services. Many f these services are funded by federal and state revenues and grants. Because f Suth Flrida s diverse ppulatin, the Office f HIV/AIDS places an emphasis n reducing health disparities in minrities; ne f the main reasns fr which I wuld like t wrk with this particular agency.
