List of Academic Experts Faculty of Humanities: 2012 List of Academic Experts Executive Dean of the Faculty Dr Stanley Mukhola is passionate about transformation in higher education. He believes that the ghosts of the past, such as poverty, can only be eradicated by educating the nation. He was involved in all the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) audits at this university and has chaired audit committees of other universities. Under his leadership, the first libraries were opened as community projects in rural Limpopo and in KwaZulu-Natal. He holds a DEd in Environmental Education from the University of Johannesburg, and he has published extensively in the field of Environmental Health. Office of the Dean Associate Dean: Prof Elsabe Coetzee Prof Elsabe Coetzee is the associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. She is also involved in research and is focusing on topics like community engagement, post-graduate studies and open distance learning. She holds a PhD in Psycho- and Socio- Pedagogics from the University of Pretoria. Her most recent publication is on Community Engagement in Higher Education. Prof Coetzee has successfully supervised 20 Master s degree students and two Doctoral students. She is currently supervising four Doctoral students. He holds a D-Ed in Mathematics Education from the Walter Sisulu University and is the author of more than 35 articles in accredited journals. His fields of expertise include Mathematics education, teacher education, curriculum issues, and learners understanding in Mathematics. He currently holds the OR Tambo Chair - Mathematics, Science and Technology Education - at the Tshwane University of Technology. Prof Mwakapenda authored 13 articles that were published in accredited journals, two book chapters, one edited book, and he delivered more than 30 papers at international conferences. Applied Languages Prof Linda van Huyssteen Prof Linda van Huyssteen Prof Linda van Huyssteen obtained a D Lit et Phil in Linguistics degree at the University of South Africa. She is actively involved in the promotion of post graduate students internally and externally as examiner for other universities. She also reviews research chair applications for South African universities tasked by the NRF and worked on an NRF research project on Computational morphology in IsiZulu up to 2010. She published in linguistic and onomastic journals (9 articles) and read several papers at different conferences in Southern Africa and overseas in linguistics, onomastics, mythology and terminology. She belongs to professional societies and reviews articles for academic journals. His areas of expertise include: Sociolinguistics (esp. Contact Linguistics: pidgins and creoles); Language Attitudes; Language Policy & Planning; and, World Englishes. Prof Mann co-authored a book (on the possible effects of multilingualism on academic achievement and additional language learning in Iran). He is currently busy with another book on language attitudes which will be published in 2012. He has numerous articles in peer-reviewed, international journals, and served as a reviewer for several academic journals (including Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages; Language Policy; Journal for Language Teaching). Prof Mann has successfully supervised more than one hundred Master s dissertations, and three Doctoral theses. He is currently supervising five Doctoral and five Master s students. List of Academic Experts Prof Mashudu C Mashige Prof Churchill Mashige Tel: (012) 382 9942 Email: MashigeMC@tut.ac.za Prof Mashudu C Mashige holds a D Litt et Phil (English) from the former Rand Afrikaans University, now the University of Johannesburg. The title of his thesis is Identity, Culture and Contemporary South African Poetry. To date he has published fourteen (14) peer-reviewed scholarly articles, written two (2) book chapters and authored nineteen (19) forewords/ editorials in accredited journals. He is currently main supervisor to two doctoral and co-supervises Masters students. He is, furthermore, also in the study panel of two other Doctoral students. He has externally examined four (4) doctoral theses and eleven (11) Master s dissertations for UFS, UKZN, UL, UZ and UFH. His research interests are, but not limited to, language as identity marker, folklore studies, orality, integrating literature into language teaching, the construction of identities, folkloric expressions, multilingualism, indigenous knowledge systems, Literature, Language Matters, African Renaissance, and Moral Regeneration. Prof Mashige is Scientific Editor of the Southern African Journal for Folklore Studies, former Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Educational Studies and past Deputy Editor of the International Journal of African Renaissance Studies. He also serves in the South African Geographical Names Council as a Ministerial appointee. Dr Susanne Harper Dr Susanne Harper Tel: (012) 382 9942 Email: harpersm@tut.ac.za Dr Susanne Harper obtained a DLitt from the University of Pretoria. She authored 11 articles that were published in accredited journals and 10 articles that were published in non-accredited journals. She is also the author of a book entitled, in Afrikaans, Wen met suksesvolle kommunikasie in jou beroep. During her career, Dr Harper reviewed 21 Afrikaans books for Die Beeld newspaper. He specializes in Total Quality Management (TQM) and improvement of schools. He published 4 articles in accredited journals. He is also the author of The relationship between total quality management and school improvement which was published in 2011. He successfully supervised 3 Doctoral students and 15 Master s students. He is currently supervising 3 Doctoral students and 8 Master s students. Prof Harry Rampa is a member of the Education Dean s Forum and a member of Education Management Association of South Africa (EMASA) as well as a member of the South African Council for Education (SACE). Prof Anil Kanjee Prof Anil Kanjee obtained a DEd degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Research and Evaluation Methods. Currently, he serves as the Research Professor within the Department, and is the co-ordinator of the Masters and Doctoral program. His research focuses on the use of assessment for improving learning, teacher professional development, the development of national assessment systems, the application of ICT for improving learning and teaching, and the use of Item Response Theory for reporting test scores. He has extensive experience in national and international studies, and has served as a technical advisor to education ministries in Africa and Asia as well as to national and international organisations like UNESCO and UNICEF. He has published numerous articles in accredited journal and has contributed chapters to various books. He recently co-authored a book with Y Sayed and M Nkomo, The search for quality: Policy reforms to improve education quality in South Africa since 1994 which is expected to be publisehd in 2012. Currently he is working on four projects the focuses on the development of a: (i) framework for implementing assessment for learning in- and pre-service capacity development programs; (ii) computerised system for supporting teachers improve their classroom assessment practices; (iii) framework for reporting national assessment scores; and (iv) a teacher professional development system delivered through mobile platforms. 6 Educational Studies

Prof Simeon Maile Tel: (012) 382 9415 Email: MaileS@tut.ac.za Prof Simeon Maile Prof Simeon Maile obtained his PhD with specialization in Educational Management in 2000 from the University of Pretoria. To date, five Doctoral candidates and 28 Master s students have successfully completed their studies under his supervision. He has presented thirty-three papers at national and international conferences. He has published twenty-six articles in refereed accredited national and international journals, six chapter books and two books. Three of his book manuscripts are being prepared for publication. Currently he chairs the research section in the Department of Educational Studies. Prof Maile has received institutional awards and national and international grants for his research. His research interests cut across Educational Management, Education and Development, Education and Politics, Research Methods for the Social and Human Sciences, Economics of Education, Education Policy Analysis, and Education Labour Relations. Dr Thelma de Jager Dr Thelma de Jager obtained her DEd from the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 2001. She authored three articles that were published in accredited journals and has supervised one Doctoral and six Master s students. In 2001 Dr De Jager s research findings on Outcomes Based Education (OBE) were used for the improvement of the South African Curriculum by the South African Teachers Union (SATU). Journalism Dr Pedro Diederichs Dr Pedro Diederichs obtained a Doctorate in Journalism from the Tshwane University of Technology. He specializes in Print Media. Dr Diederichs published 5 articles in accredited journals, contributed one chapter in a book on mass media and wrote many articles for various newspapers. His thesis is focused on the admissibility of unconstitutionally obtained evidence in criminal proceedings in South Africa. His research focus areas are constitutional law, the law of evidence, criminal procedural law and African human rights law (with a particular focus on the following interconnected issues: good governance, socio-economic rights, and environmental law). He has authored 6 articles which were published in accredited law journals; 2 chapters in books, and one contribution in conference proceedings. In addition, 3 manuscripts authored by him are currently in the peer review process. He has presented 8 papers at national and international conferences. He recently entered into an agreement with Juta to edit and convert his unpublished thesis into a book, designed for use primarily by legal practitioners and court officials. The Faculty of Law of the University of the Western Cape has recently appointed him as an external examiner of an LLM dissertation. He has successfully co-supervised one Master s degree student in the Department of Policing. He currently co-supervises one Doctoral student, and he is the supervisor of two Master s degree students. His areas of specialization are a developmental state, local governance, state reform, research, politics and theory of knowledge in the field of public administration. With more than 50 publications to his name, which comprise articles in scholarly, professional and political journals, chapters in books and research papers in conference proceedings, Maserumule s expertise in issues of governance is undisputable. He co-edited and contributed chapters in these books: Cases in Public Administration: A South African Perspective [Heinemann in 2004] and The Zuma Administration: Critical Challenges [HSRC Press 2010]. He also edited conference proceedings titled Public Administration in the Second Decade of Democracy in South Africa. He supervises masters and doctoral students, of which some had already completed. He presented more than 30 papers in national and international conferences. He participated in the review of a single public service bill for the Ministry of Public Service and Administration (DPSA). He completed a commissioned research paper on Development and Transformation: The Place of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the Developmental State for the Presidential Review Committee on SOEs. He is the President of the South African Association of Public Administration and Management (SAAPAM). His views on matters of governance are regularly solicited for policy development in government and also by the media. Dr Sanjay Balkaran Dr Sanjay Balkaran obtained a PhD in Public Administration from the University of Zululand. His thesis was entitled: The Impact of Trade Unions on Public Service Reforms in South Africa and Nigeria: a Comparative Study. He specializes in the areas of Public Sector Reform, Comparative Public Policy, Labour Politics, Public Sector Labour Research, and Research Methodology. Dr Balkaran further holds a Master s degree in Business Administration (Public Service) MANCOSA. He is an expert in the fields of Public Management, Public Finance and Economics, Public Sector Collective Bargaining, Public Sector Labour Relations and Dispute Resolution, Forensic Auditing, Criminal Justice and Criminology, and Investigative Technique. Dr Nicolette Papastefanou Dr Nicolette Papastefanou Dr Nicolette Papastefanou obtained a Doctorate in Public Relations Management from the Tshwane University of technology in 2008. Her fields of expertise include Communication Science, Organisation Science and Behaviour, Virtual Organisations, and systems-based theories. She has published articles in accredited journals, written a textbook, and delivered papers at 9 international conferences, winning two Best Paper awards. His expertise lies in the field of Policing. During his career, he has supervised 10 Master s degree students and co-supervised 11 Master s degree students. His areas of focus include: Criminology, Penology, Social Problems, Human Security, Youths Studies, Anthropological and Development issues. With two decades experience in his career, he attained the rank of full Professor in 2009 before he joined Tshwane University of Technology. Prof Obioha authored over fifty (50) articles published in peer reviewed/accredited Journals and chapters in books, co-edited four (4) volumes of Research for Development and authored two (2) mono books: Civil Society s Participation in Urban Crime Management in Nigeria...(2006) and Public Perception of the Role of Nigeria Police Force and Civil Society Based Security Operatives in Urban Crime Management in Nigeria... Before joining the university he was a law enforcement officer for 13 years, of which ten years spent at Detective Service and three within Information and Communication Technology (ICT) environment. He is a member of the Council of the Criminological and Victimological Society of Southern Africa (CRIMSA) as well as an EXCO member of the Policing Association of Southern Africa (POLSA). His key areas of expertise include: Detective Training Curriculum and Performance Management, Mentorship, Identity Theft, Knowledge Management, Human Trafficking and Police Corruption. He authored and co-authored articles which were published in accredited journals as well as presented papers at national and international conferences. He is supervising three M-Tech students, as well as co-supervising two doctoral students. Dr Mofokeng is at the early stage of writing a book entitled Policing Human Trafficking: A South African Perspective to be published by Taylor & Francis Group. Dr Adewale Adisa Olutola Dr Adewale Olutola obtained his Doctorate degree in Policing from the Tshwane University of Technology. His Thesis entitled: Crime Prevention and The Criminal Justice Systems of Nigeria and South Africa: A Comparative Perspective. His research interests cut across Legal systems, Crime prevention and the Comparative Criminal Justice Systems. He authored a number of articles in accredited journals and presented papers at numerous international conferences. In 2011, he won the Best Paper presented in the category of Criminal justice during the BI-Annual Conference of Criminological and Victimological Society of Southern Africa (CRIMSA). He is currently writing chapters in a book to be prescribed for Policing students in Africa. He is a member of Criminological and Victimological Society of Southern Africa, Policing Association of Southern Africa and the Nigerian Bar Association.
