Master of Affairs Understand today. Shape tomorrow. Hertie School of Governance founded and supported by

Welcome The Hertie School of Governance is an international teaching and research centre of excellence located in vibrant and cosmopolitan Berlin. Our motto is Understand today. Shape tomorrow. We attract a highly talented student body from diverse national and disciplinary backgrounds united by a desire to make a difference and to bring about a better future. We, at the Hertie School, equip them with the understanding, knowledge and tools to do so in a professional and research-intensive environment, characterised by close interaction with faculty, lively public debates and engagement with current policy developments. As part of a global network that includes the London School of Economics and Political Science, Sciences Po in Paris, Columbia University in New York and many other excellent Public Policy Schools worldwide, we are able to offer a wide range of academic exchange and dual degree programmes. The Hertie School s Master of Affairs programme (MIA) seeks to prepare outstanding students and young professionals for positions requiring a profound understanding of today s global policy challenges in government, diplomacy and inter national organi sations, as well as in the private and civil society sectors. Policymakers and experts today are confronted with a wide array of global challenges. These range from a crisis-prone global economy and its repercussions, to security challenges such as new regional instabilities, nuclear proliferation, cyber warfare, and conflicts over limited resources. To meet such challenges successfully in a rapidly transforming context, knowing how to navigate the complex landscape of diverse actors and disciplines is crucial. The interdisciplinary programme equips successful graduates with policymaking tools to tackle global challenges and devise sound policy proposals in a global multilevel system. We warmly invite you to find out more about the MIA programme and hope to welcome you on our campus soon. Prof. Helmut K. Anheier, PhD President 2 3

Academic Programme A global perspective on governance The practice-oriented curriculum gives students a firm understanding of the international and transnational dimension of policymaking. Core Courses In the first year, students attend courses in global governance, international economics, international law and security policy. They are equipped with the analytical toolkit to evaluate international policies and to manage international organisations. A practice course in international conflict management supplements the core curriculum. Between the first and second year of study, students gain professional experience in a full-time internship in an international organisation or other relevant institutions. s In their second year, students choose a concentration in either Finance and or Security and which they complete with at least three electives from the respective field. Further, they deepen their knowledge with additional international affairs electives and complement their profile with electives from the Hertie School s Master of Public Policy catalogue. Students complete their degree requirements with a master thesis, which is typically part of a group project on a topic relevant to international affairs. The thesis is developed and carried out in cooperation with a practice partner and under the guidance of a supervising faculty member. Javier Solana Hertie School Senior Fellow, former EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy The field of international relations is due for a thrust of innovation as old recipes no longer meet the demands of a multipolar world. Europe, for example, sets very high standards for itself and is confronted with similar expectations from other nations, regions and global players. The development of a degree programme that prepares young leaders in this field is a very exciting prospect. 4 5
