Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan. A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is required for all staff and students unable to self-evacuate in an emergency. Provision for staff/students/visitors who are unable to selfevacuate is the responsibility of the organiser of the class/lecture/event/meeting. Disabled Access Guide for the Peter Wilson Building. This building has not been designed for, but has been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. The Peter Wilson Building was built in1950 and currently houses The Scottish Agricultural College (SRUC). The Scottish Agricultural College is an innovative, knowledge-based organisation, supporting the development of land-based industries and communities. Studies undertaken here include agriculture and related sciences, rural business development and management, food chain quality and safety, plus rural resource and environmental management. Location. The Peter Wilson Building is located within Edinburgh University s King s Buildings campus; this campus is well served by public transport and is accessible by car. The building is within three miles of the city centre and two miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The campus lies between West Mains Road and Mayfield Road, about two miles south of George Square. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the City Centre. The nearest bus stop is located within the campus approximately 60 metres from the Peter Wilson Building. Numerous bus services stop within the Campus and along West Mains Road. Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from www.mybustracker.co.uk. Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access the Peter Wilson Building from Gate 1 which is located on West Mains Road. Page 4.

Parking. The King s Buildings Campus has numerous parking bays but no free parking; all parking bays within the campus require a permit. City of Edinburgh Council parking is available outwith the campus on West Mains Road and the adjacent Langton Road. See Location Map. There are currently no dropped kerbs leading from parking bays located along West Mains Road. Access from these parking bays to the campus is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. Disabled Parking Bays. There is one disabled parking bay located adjacent to the Peter Wilson Building which is for SRUC staff and visitors. There is level access to Entrance 1 from this disabled parking bay via a dropped kerb and a paved footpath with a shallow gradient. See Location Map. Peter Wilson disabled parking bay image. Footpath leading to Entrance 1 image. There are two additional disabled parking bays to the front of the John Clerk Maxwell Building (JCMB). Please note that the access route from the JCMB is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. The route incorporates a long road with a shallow gradient and a rough tarmac surface. Please note that there are bollards along this access route which restrict vehicular access. See Location Map. JCMB disabled parking bays image. Page 6.

SRUC Parking. There is a secure SRUC car park located to the side of the building. This car park has a fairly level tarmac surface and can be accessed via a secure barrier. There is also a limited number of parking bays located to the front of the building for SRUC staff. See Location Map. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a SRUC parking bay, it is recommended that contact is made with your host prior to making your journey. University Car Parks. There are two University car parks located close to the Peter Wilson Building. Please note that both car parks incorporate a rough tarmac surface and are outwith 100 metres of Entrance 1. The first University car park is located to the rear of the adjacent Roger Land Building and the second is located to the front of the JCMB. See Location Map. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a University parking bay, it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the Transport & Parking Office prior to making your journey. Outside Access. There are two entrances to the Peter Wilson building. See Location Map. Entrance 1. This entrance is located on a level surface to the front of the building. Entrance 1 can be accessed via a set of three steps or a paved footpath from the SRUC disabled parking bay. Please note that the steps do not incorporate tactile coverings or contrasting nosings but do incorporate handrails. Entrance 1 consists of a set of automatic glazed double doors. These doors lead to a vestibule area, a set of push pad operated glazed double doors and the buildings reception. Entrance 2. Please note that there are currently no dropped kerbs along the access route to this entrance. Entrance 2 is only recommended for wheelchair users with assistance. Entrance 2 is located to the front of the building on a level paved surface and is the main entrance for the SRUC Library. This entrance can be accessed via a flight of steps from the front of the building and a footpath from the SRUC car park. Steps leading to the entrance incorporate handrails to both sides but do not incorporate contrasting nosings or tactile coverings. Footpath to the front of the building image. These doors open inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. Internal Access. There is good circulation space throughout the SRUC building and the majority of doors within corridors are held open to promote ease of access. There is level access to the Ground, First, Second and Third Floors of the building. Level access to the Mezzanine Floors is only possible via an internal lift from the main lobby. Please note that there is currently no level access to Lecture theatres A, B, C and D. See Floor Plans for Locations. SRUC Library. There is currently no level access between the main building and the SRUC library. The access route from the reception consists of crossing the arcade to a set of glazed double doors, negotiating a flight of stone steps and an additional set of double doors. See Floor Plans for Location. From here there is access to the library via a set of push pad operated glazed double doors and a set of security barriers. These doors open inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. There is ample circulation space and standard seating located throughout the library. There is also a single accessible computer desk and a quiet study area. SRUC Library Reception. The SRUC Library reception is located adjacent to the library entrance. See Floor Plans for Location. The reception desk is equipped with a call button and is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. Please note that the reception is currently not fitted with an induction loop system. Library reception image. SRUC Reception. The SRUC reception is located within the main lobby adjacent to Entrance 1. See Floor Plans for Location. The reception desk is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user but it is currently not fitted with an induction loop system. Lifts. There are two passenger lifts within the Peter Wilson building. See Floor Plans for Location. Please note that the passenger lifts have manually operated heavy sliding doors and are not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. The two lifts are listed below: Lift 1. Lift 1 is located within the main lobby and provides access to the Mezzanine Floors. Lift 2. Lift 2 is located to the rear of the building and provides access to the Ground, First, Second and Third Floors. The lift call points and car controls are not at an accessible height. The lift car controls are not within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. The control panel does not have braille markings. The lift has an alarm. There is contrast between the lift wall and floor surfaces. There is no induction loop system. There is no audible announcer. The lifts do not have a mirror on the rear wall. The lift cars do not incorporate interior handrails. There is no visual floor indicator. The lighting level in the lifts is good. Lifts do not have pressure sensors. Page 11.

Platform Lift. There is one platform lift located within the Peter Wilson building. See Floor Plans for Location. This lift is located to the front of the building and can be accessed from the arcade. The platform lift provides access to the Mezzanine, Ground, First and Second Floors. The lift doors are operated manually and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. The lift car controls incorporate braille markings and are within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. All staircases within the building incorporate contrasting nosings on steps and handrails to both sides. See Floor Plans for Location. The four staircases are listed below: Staircase 1. This staircase is located adjacent to the reception and provides access between the Ground and the Second Floors. Staircase 2. This staircase is one of two timber staircases located to the centre of the building. Staircase 3 provides access between the First and the Third Floors. Staircase 3. This staircase is the second central timber staircase which provides access between the Ground and the Third Floors. Staircase 4. This staircase is located to the rear of the building and provides access between the Ground and the Third Floors. Page 12.

Toilets. Toilets are available on all floors as follows: Standard Male and Female toilets are located on Basement, Ground, First and Second Floors. Accessible toilets are located on the First and Ground Floors. See Floor Plans for Location. The accessible toilet incorporates the following: There is left hand lateral transfer space. There is good manoeuvring space. There is an emergency pull chord. The doors open outwards. The widths of the accessible toilet doors are suitable for wheelchairs. There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. The tap type is lever operation. There are no coat hooks. The contrast between the grab rails and wall is fair.
