SOMETIMES THE HELPING HAND IS YOUR OWN Raúl Vásquez (not his real name), a single father of two, lives in North Philadelphia and started to use drugs at the age of 13, after his father was killed by gang members in the area. Raúl was influenced by his peers, their delinquent behavior and his environment. He then was overwhelmed by depression, loneliness and isolation. His oldest bother was also in jail, while his mother used both cocaine and alcohol. Raúl then lost his only emotional support system, his girlfriend and the mother of his children. She left him for someone else, which put Raúl into a worse condition in all areas of his life. Raúl went deeper into his drug addiction and delinquent behavior. His grandmother took care of his children, and his relationship with them was very vulnerable. Months later he went to jail, due to problems related to a drug dealer. After his release, he continued with his addiction until he was homeless. Raúl used to stay in an abandoned basement, and sometimes in cars. He then began to feel uneasy about his life and what he was offering to his children and decided to reach out for help after he attempted suicide. Raúl then started to take responsibility. He joined APM s drug and alcohol program, and started to attend group and individual therapy frequently. After a while he was clean. Now he was more proactively seeking spiritual guidance and having a closer relationship with God. Raúl soon received housing benefits thorough APM s housing program due to his ability to comply and achieve progress, and left his life of homelessness. Raúl s relationship with his children is growing stronger every day. Currently he is completing his GED classes. He dreams of starting his own construction business, where he has experience and vocational skills. At this time, Raúl s relationships with God, his family and with his health are strong. He actively participates in mental health counseling to help continue in his recovery from drug addiction, also through APM. Raúl is great example of someone who really wants and desires to achieve progress in life, and who recognizes that he needs to marshal all available resources to reach his goal, be they therapeutic, emotional, faith, community, or educational. APM is proud to have a part in his recovery.
