He won a bronze medal in the junior middleweight weight class during the Junior Polish Championships in Włocławek in 1967. He twice represented Poland in matches against Hungary and the German Democratic Republic. Fe fought over a dozen international duels. He belonged to the Youth Polish Team and to a 1 st league team of Gwardia Łódź. He has the 2 nd dan grade in aikido and 3 rd dan grade in jujitsu. He was a student of the University of Physical Education in Warsaw and in 1973 he got a MA title in physical education together with diplomas of 2 nd class boxing coach, of a judo instructor and of a specialist in massage. In 1983 he graduated Łódź University and he became a Master of Arts in philosophy. At the same university he was also studying culture studies (specialization: Theatre Studies) at the Faculty of Philology and he got a title of MA in Theatre Studies in 1986. He graduated also the Postgraduate Religious Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Warsaw University (1984). His PhD dissertation on Conception of the Human Being in the Theory of Physical Culture (which after alterations was published with the title Physical Culture, Personality, Education. Methodological Issues ) was defended by him at the University of Physical Education in Warsaw in 1984 and he got a title of PhD in physical culture sciences. The supervisor was Professor Zbigniew Krawczyk. Proceedings connected with his habilitation on the basis of a dissertation Body and Spirit as Objects of Christian Philosophical Culture took place in the Institute of Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1992. Their prerequisite was a book The Human Being and His Body in Church s Teaching and in Early Christian Philosophy Issues and Problems. A Monograph (Moscow 1991). As a result he got a title of a habilitated doctor in the humanities in the field of philosophy. He decided to undergo habilitation proceedings in Russia mainly because of his research on philosophical anthropology of Russian Orthodox Christianity (it refers to the so-called prohibita, which then were available only with consent of the authorities and in their place) and because of the fact that it enabled him to discuss with and consult local experts in the issue. In 2003 he was awarded professorship and in 2004 he was appointed an ordinary professor in Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw. 2. The supervisor of the abovementioned dissertations was Prof. Dr. Rev. Stanisław Kowalczyk. 5. Scientific interests While speaking on Professor Kosiewicz s scientific interests in a synthesizing way one can proclaim that he carries out researches mainly in the fields philosophical anthropology (concerning sources and transformations of Christian conceptions of the body), philosophy of religion, general methodology and philosophy of physical culture and sport. He has considered also issues connected with cultural and educational aspects of tourism and recreation. He has numerously presented new interpretations of petrified issues and assumptions, controversial in their relation towards earlier viewpoints. It refers to negation of the existence of the philosophy of sport as an independent and mature (in the content-related sense) discipline, to total rejection of the conception of free time in its philosophical (e.g. Aristotelian) and non-philosophical interpretation and replacing it with a conception of time which is occupied in every moment of human life or any other living creature s life. It refers also to challenging of apotheosizing the fair play principle in sport, financial disinterestedness of the International Olympic Committee, Olympic education as allegedly the most important source of educational values and an ideological, as a matter of fact, conception assuming that Olympic sport is something more than sport. In the range of Professor Kosiewicz s interest there have been, among others, axiological problems connected with looking for and researching the source, sense, manifestations and influence of values in physical culture and sport. He has also dealt with issues from the field philosophical anthropology analyzing human being in the light of the dynamic theory of man and interpreting the subject as a being composed of three ontic layers: the relational (social) one, the ideal (mental) one and the material (bodily) one. It created a basis for formulation on the ground of the philosophy of physical culture - a conception of personality and health of ontic and phenomenal status, conceived as beings which appear or
not, and if they exist they do it only as ontic facts, mediated through man and society, what means that they can be regarded from the ontological viewpoint. The personality and health understood in such a way are the basis for philosophically interpreted pedagogy of physical culture a field whose aim is education, development and improvement of the human being according to the assumed aims and educational ideals referring to axiology the source and sense of values of physical culture. Reflection on the pedagogy of physical culture has been interpreted in the light of general assumptions of Hessen s philosophy of culture and pedagogy as a part of the philosophy of physical culture; that is, as a philosophy realizing the assumed world of values and changing on that basis ontic layers of the human individual, personality and health, creating and shaping the human being as the subject of culture and civilization. In the range of Professor Kosiewicz s interest there have been also methodological issues; that is, analysis of logical structure of optimizing propositions of the pedagogy of physical culture on the basis of the theory of physical education and other subdisciplines belonging to that pedagogy (health education, education through sport, pedagogy in the praxeological interpretation, training theory and theory of sports contest). As a result of the abovementioned researches he has come to a conclusion that the pedagogy of physical culture (as well as its sub-disciplines) is a typical practical discipline where there are constructed aims, complexes of values, educational ideals, ideals of personality and health of teleological and optimizing character, and where there are defined ways of their realization, fields and variants of practical activities. The discussed conceptions have been enriched by him with extensive considerations from the field of general methodology, philosophy of science and science studies presented in the papers On Methodology and Hypothesis and Methodology as a Form of Agnosticism, and in Verification and Hypothesis. Professor Kosiewicz is of an opinion that foundations of anthropological assumptions of physical culture and sport are constituted by conceptions of man taking into account the physical that is, bodily basis of the human subject. It results, among others, form the fact that physical culture is understood also as somatic culture that is, bodily culture (nota bene Professor Kosiewicz is against using the terms somatic culture and bodily culture ). Because of that reason, considerations on human corporeality are treated as fundamental researches form the viewpoint of physical education constituting the genetic basis of physical culture and of the connected disciplines. Professor Kosiewicz focuses attention also on problems of the body in Christian anthropology considered from the historical perspective from Orphism to modernity. It refers, first of all, to three books Bóg, cielesność i przemoc / God, Coporeality and Violence / (1997), Myśl wczesnochrześcijańska i katolicka wobec ciała / Attitude of Early Christian and Catholic Thought towards the Body / (1998) and Bóg, cielesność i miłość / God, Corporeality and Love / (1998) which have been reedited several times as well as to The Human Being and His Body in Church s Teaching and in Early Christian Philosophy Issues and Problems. A Monograph (1991), which characterizes over three thousand years of religious thought, theology and philosophy of European cultures. He turned attention there to Judaist and Hellenic roots of Christian anthropology, to the early Christian basis of development of Catholic conceptions of man and to its differentiated attitude to the human body. He presented also an analysis of a contemporary form of Catholic anthropology pointing out to significant Biblical influences - as well as religious influences of Greek and Roman antiquity - and their consequences. He discussed also attitudes of Russian Orthodox Christianity and Protestantism towards the human body and its needs. Considerations on ancient roots and various shapes of Christian anthropology and especially on conceptions of
the human body are especially useful when we try to explain the Christian Church s negative attitude towards corporeality, physical culture, physical education, sport, tourism and recreation, which has lasted for almost two thousand years. It refers to the early Christian Patristic Period, the Middle Ages, modern and contemporary times. That explanation can be also useful for explaining reasons of re-evaluation of that attitude in Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity and Protestantism in the 20 th century, as well as a far-going affirmation of the body and its needs connected with various forms of physical culture. The pointed out researches in the field of philosophy of religion and Christian anthropology have been commented on in an encyclopaedia of Polish Scientific Publishers PWN entitled Religion (the entry Kosiewicz, Warszawa, vol. 6, 2003, p. 55). Another, strictly philosophical sphere of Prof. J. Kosiewicz s considerations is connected with ancient Greek philosophy and its influence on Western thought and culture. He, among others, turns his attention to the origins and transformations of that philosophy, and to its etymological, ontological, epistemological and anthropological foundations and determinants. Hence he deals with issues concerning religious and cognitive determinants of Pythagoreanism; refers to relations between Socrates agnosticism and contemporary epistemological scepticism and to problems connected with corporeality, sex and erotic love in the context of Plato s philosophy of culture saturated with madness and striving for immortality. He penetrates ancient interpretations of time in general and their influence on Cartesian, Kantian and Heideggerian theories of being and time. He refers also to relations taking place between Pythagorean and post-pythagorean philosophy of cosmos, on the one hand, and Copernican astronomy and its Kantian and Nietzschean reception, on the other. A manifestation of that activity is not only a membership in the International Association of Greek Philosophy and participation in its annual seminars and conferences but also many English-language publications under auspices of that institution and books dedicated to the abovementioned issues to be published in Polish and English. Professor Kosiewicz is also a drama critic and a reviewer although less active than some time ago. He has published over 40 papers connected with theatre and some concerning the theory of film. In recent years beginning from 2003 Professor Kosiewicz has been directing international team researches in the field of sport social sciences, which initially were participated by representatives of 8 states (Austria, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Russia and Poland) and then of 13 states.
