Advanced Training and Industrial Research for Complex Engineering Systems, A+ A Task Force promoted by, with the Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research,, at IST, Lisboa in collaboration with: IDMEC/LAETA at IST, Lisboa IDMEC/LAETA at FEUP, Porto ISR/LARSyS, at IST, Lisboa and the Program MIT-Portugal - Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing /LTI A Research Workshop and Mid-term Review Tuesday, 29 July 2014 at, 14.30H -18.00H

Background Note A+ aims to build capacity through industrial research and expert competence building with a main focus on industrial aeronautics, but with potential applications in other areas of complex engineering systems, including Oil&Gas field services and urban systems. It is a project-based initiative, focused on the North of Portugal, building capacity in, and it is expected to foster and promote new industry-science relationships, involving end-users, technology-based firms and academic research groups. The Research in July 29, 2014, will consider an open discussion of the main set of industrially oriented R&D projects launched and being promoted during 2014 under the A+ Initiative. It is aimed to discuss the progress achieved and guide future work to be developed in the context of the various projects and respective s. It considers four main parts, as follows: Aeroacoustics Promoting new skills for future engineering challenges New challenges for aeronautics design Technologies and systems for oil field services looking ahead Urban mobility and sensors stimulating smarter citizens 1. Rationale Thematic Areas under development through A+ have been identified with a focus on engineering design and system thinking, building on trans-disciplinary research with a strong application-driven orientation. At the short-term (i.e., during 2014), it is expected that the proposed Thematic Areas open a few selected activities in both specialized and horizontal fields of application, to serve as the initial phase for a medium-term program (2015-2020) with the following main goals: Aeronautics 1: Fixed wing analysis and design o Analysis and Optimization for weight, noise reduction and safety o Stress Analysis and Stress Checking Activities for mechanisms and components o Design for manufacturing: lean design methods under increased uncertainty Aeronautics 2: Helicopter systems and rotary wing analysis and design o Analysis and Optimization for weight reduction o Noise reduction, Safety and reliability analysis o Aero-acoustics optimization and cabin design Oil&Gas: subsea technologies for oil exploration o Analysis and optimization of specific technologies (drilling,..) o Safety and reliability analysis Urban technologies and systems: sensors and information o Sensoring technologies and optimization of specific systems o Safety and reliability analysis o Man-machine interfaces Engineering Systems: Systems design and management o System optimization, integration and fault-finding in complex operations o Cyber-physical systems and security

Technology management enterprise: Aeronautical and Oil&Gas industries o Technical change, knowledge integration and supply chain analysis: Identification of opportunities for industrialization under increased uncertainty o Human resources and systems of competence building o Design for manufacturing o Risk Governance and industrialization patterns under increased uncertainty At a starting point, the following specific technological areas have been considered: Engineering design: o Metallic and composite design; o New and novel materials for sustainable design o Designing low-weight structures o Kinematic simulations Structural analysis and aerodynamics: o Aeroacoustics o Vibration reduction o Fatigue analysis o Static and dynamic Finite Element Modelling Advanced manufacturing systems: o High-end rapid manufacturing technologies o Production of composite, metallic and rapid prototyping components o Micro-tooling and manufacturing o Nano-structures Systems and avionics: o Aircraft systems o Navigation systems (all weather) o System integration and fault-finding o Terrain mapping and image recognition Information networking, design and security, and related software engineering: o Optimization of information systems in complex operations in aeronautics o Cyber-physical systems and security o Man-machine interfaces Testing: o Static and fatigue tests o Non-destructive testing o Certification Dynamics of technical change and innovation: o Governance of emerging technological risks o Knowledge integration and supply chain analysis o Managing human resources for competence building o Identification of opportunities for industrialization These and other potential technological areas and related collaborative efforts are being implemented in a way to allow the continuous monitoring and evaluation of the program, as well as launching new areas of advanced training and industrial research (i.e., applicationdriven), whenever they rely in well documented technological principles and relevant problems to foster the involvement of and Portugal in emerging aeronautical and other areas.

This includes considering the management of technological innovation in terms of facilitating the creation of new industries, by promoting strategic visions for public and private ventures and developing the necessary skills to help developing collaborations for technological innovation at an international level. It should be noted that the Thematic Areas listed in this document are expected to serve as training test beds for developing a specific advanced training action in 2014. The main goal is to identify opportunities and main challenges towards the implementation of a specialization program, leading to a Master degree, on Technology Management Enterprise aimed to train future industry experts and leaders, offering the opportunity to study advanced engineered systems for industrial applications. Table 1 lists the Thematic Areas considered in the first year of the A+ initiative, together with the main instruments already being used: Industrially oriented research projects, involving new research fellowships at and joint research s with academic researchers and external experts, as well as endusers; Short courses, Workshops, s; Internal Work Process, including specific tasks associated with work, discussion groups, and expert at and associated university groups.
