Rua Luís Reis Santos Coimbra, Portugal LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF ALTERNATIVE VEHICLE AND (BIO)FUEL TECHNOLOGIES 20 of July, h 13h To assess the sustainability of vehicle mobility strategies and identify directions and opportunities for improvement it is fundamental to consider the entire life-cycle of vehicles and energy carriers. This talk introduces the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and presents the application of LCA to alternative vehicle and (bio)fuel technologies: namely electric vehicles (100% and hybrid plug-in); and conventional internal combustion (diesel and gas) engine vehicles fuelled with fossil fuels and/or biofuels.
ENG. ANTÓNIO CUNHA Position: Vice Director Instituition: Laboratory of Automatics and Systems of Pedro Nunes Institute Scientific Area: Electronics and Computer Science Adress: Rua Pedro Nunes Coimbra, Portugal STUDIE VISIT HOSPITAL ROVISCO PAIS 21 of July, h 13h Rovisco Pais Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (CMRRC- Rovisco Pais) belongs to the central government. This institution provides healthcare to the general public; it also works in healthcare education and investigation, and is a reference in differentiated care in rehabilitation with a privileged link to other healthcare services in the Central Region of Portugal. The two Automatic People Movers (cybercars) developed by IPN provide the patients with reduced mobility to be transported between different buildings of the hospital. Operating since March of 2010, on outdoor environment it replaced a set of minivans which did the transportation and their fulltime drivers.
PROFESSOR ANDRÉ MENDES Position: Assistant Professor Scientific Area: Power Electronics Adress: Electrical and Computer Engineering Department - Polo II Campus Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. Rua Luís Reis Santos Coimbra, Portugal LAB HARMONIC POLLUTION GENERATED BY POWER ELECTRONIC CONVERTERS 23 of July, h 13h, 14h 16h Power electronic converters are increasingly used in several different applications such as power supplies for computers, lighting or speed control of electric motors. The aim of this course is to provide students the opportunity to investigate power system quality and simultaneously analyze the harmonic distortion generated by some of the applications mentioned above, by carrying out experimental tests.
PROFESSOR ANA BASTOS Position: Assistant Professor Scientific Area: Traffic Engineering and Urban Mobility Adress: Civil Engineering Department - Polo II Campus Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. Rua Luís Reis Santos Coimbra, Portugal /LAB URBAN TRAFFIC ENGINEERING 23 of July, h 13h, 14h 16h The Traffic Engineering session will focus on the analysis and evaluation of the operational conditions of various infrastructural road elements, at two fundamental levels: (i) road safety, (ii) capacity and delays. It will be given particular relevance to the study of intersections, as they constitute the critical points of urban transport systems, pointing some innovative solutions to ensure high performance levels at different levels. The session will also focus on speed management techniques, identifying the measures to safeguard high safety levels, while contributing to the improvement of the environment. The capacity of the different infrastructural components will be evaluated by the application of two different methods: (i) conventional analytic models, (ii) microscopic simulation. The session will be divided in two sequential and complementary tasks: a theoretical session to present the general concepts and application methods, followed by a practical component focused on the analysis of practical case studies, in which students will be challenged to present proposals aiming the mitigation of problems and the improvement of solutions.
ENG. ANTÓNIO CUNHA Position: Vice Director Instituition: Laboratory of Automatics and Systems of Pedro Nunes Institute Scientific Area: Electronics and Computer Science Adress: Rua Pedro Nunes Coimbra, Portugal ADVANCED URBAN TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS BASED ON ELECTRICAL AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES 24 of July, h 11h The presentation will show the evaluation of the Automated People Mover implemented at Rovisco Pais Hospital since March There are working two autonomous electric vehicles transporting staff and patients. The second part of the presentation will propose some applications for APM and the impact of them in urban space (the connection with the mobility system, the relation with conventional cars and pedestrians, among others).
PROF. CARLOS LISBOA BENTO Position: Associate Professor Scientific Area: Information and Communication Technologies Adress: Informatics Engineering Department - Polo II Campus Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. Rua Luís Reis Santos Coimbra, Portugal DEMATERIALIZATION OF THE URBAN SPACE: MAKING THE PAVE FOR THE FUTURE CITIES 24 of July, h 13h Current technology makes possible to make available data from a large number of sensors that integrate the urban space or simply using the sensors from our smartphones in an opportunistic way. In this module we want to illustrate how the digital layer that these huge quantities of data generate will modify the way we relate with each other and with the ubiquitous services that we will have available within the urban space. These services will redefine the structure and use of the main facilities we have in the urban space - transports, health care, energy, or participative governance. We will discuss the main concepts, vision and technologies that are involved in this revolution, present examples of places where it is happening, and discuss the opportunities, implications and threats of this to our lives.
ENG. ANTÓNIO CUNHA Position: Vice Director Instituition: Laboratory of Automatics and Systems of Pedro Nunes Institute Scientific Area: Electronics and Computer Science Adress: Rua Pedro Nunes Coimbra, Portugal STUDIE VISIT INSTITUTO PEDRO NUNES 25 of July, h 13h Instituto Pedro Nunes - Association for Innovation and R&D in Science and Technology ( is a non-profit private organization founded in IPN promotes innovation and technology transfer, being the main link between the University of Coimbra and the business sector. IPN work is made through RTD in partnership with enterprises; specialized training; dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge; promotion of the creation of technology-based enterprises and their support. IPN has its own technological infrastructures six laboratories besides accessing a network of researchers in the scientific and technological system, particularly from the University of Coimbra, mainly through the Faculty of Sciences and Technology.
PROFESSOR GONÇALO CORREIA Position: Assistant Professor in Transportation Systems Scientic Area: Urban and Transportation Planning Adress: Civil Engineering Department - Polo II Campus Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. Rua Luís Reis Santos Coimbra, Portugal MANAGING TRANSPORTATION DEMAND AS A WAY TO REACH A MORE SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY 25 of July, h30 11h30 The traditional perspective on transportation planning has been to predict the growing number of automobile trips and provide the infra-structure supply to cope with that demand. The result has been that it is relatively cheap to use the automobile for almost every trip. This has consequences in increasing externalities such as pollutant emissions and unproductive use of energy. The new planning paradigm aims to make the use of the automobile more rational through a better transportation demand management. In this session students will learn which type of measures can be applied for in one hand incentive persons using transportation alternatives and in the other hand make the use of the automobile much less attractive.
PROF. ROBERT STUSSI Position: General Manager Instituition: Robert.Stussi.Mobil Scientific Area: Urbanism and Mobility Adress: Rua Joseph Bleck Dafundo-Lisboa PORTUGAL MOBILITY MANAGEMENT AS IMPORTANT PILLAR OF TRANSPORT AND MOBILITY PLANNING 26 of July, h30 13h The use of renewable energies (hydro, wind and solar) is considered to produce the electricity used by electric cars. Cost trends of renewable energies and the impact of the large scale integration electric cars in the electric grid are discussed.
