Junior Counselor Apprenticeship Program Packet Summer Camp 2017 Thank you for your interest in the Junior Counselor Apprenticeship (JCA) Program. The goal of this program is to foster leadership skills and offer practical work experience for teens entering grades 8-10. Under the guidance of Park District staff, JCAs participate using a team approach with camp counselors to supervise campers and plan activities. JCAs develop skills in leadership, teambuilding and professionalism. Four days per week JCAs work with campers at their designated camp site, and one day per week they attend leadership training. The JCA program requires a significant commitment of time and energy from each participant. In return, JCAs gain valuable personal and professional experience. The JCA Program is offered first and second session. Participants have the option of signing up for one or both sessions. Registration Fees Resident Non-Resident Session 1 June 19 - July 14 $335 $419 Session 2 July 17 - August 11 $349 $439 Typical Camp Week (example) Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday JCA Training 9am-1pm Interested applicants should complete the attached application packet and return to Taylor Witter no later than March 1, 2017. JCAs are made in the order in which applications are received and depending on availability. The completed packet must include: 1. JCA Program Application 2. Signed Parent Letter & Waiver 3. Personal Reference Form Form to be completed by a non-related adult, such as a teacher or coach who knows you well enough to describe your qualifications for the program. Reference can be turned in within one week of application being received. Note: Write your name on the form before you pass it on to your reference. Orientation, Social, and Training: o JCA Orientation (Location: Leisure Center) It is mandatory that all JCAs attend one of the JCA Orientation dates. The JCA Expectation Agreement mailed in April must be signed by the JCA and parent and returned at Orientation. Thursday, May 11: 6-7:30pm (JCAs only) & 7:30-8pm (Q & A for JCAs and Parents) OR Saturday, May 20: 9-10:30am (JCAs only) & 10:30-11am (Q & A for JCAs and Parents) You can expect a confirmation letter, JCA Expectation Agreement, and further program information in April. Dear Parent or Guardian, Your teen has expressed interest in the Northbrook Park District s Junior Counselor Apprenticeship (JCA) Program. This program has been developed for individuals interested in gaining both leadership training and practical work experience while enjoying their summer with the Park District. The JCA Program is open to students entering grades 8-10, who are at least 13 years of age by the start of camp, in the Fall of 2017 and allows participants the opportunity to work in a Park District summer camp. Once a week, the JCA group will attend a JCA Training. On these days JCAs are dismissed at 1pm.The other four days are spent at the JCA s designated camp site working with the campers. These camp days will run from 9am-1pm or 9am-3pm based on the selection and placement of your JCA. The JCA program runs through the Northbrook Park District summer camp program. In order to be considered for this program, the following must be completed and returned: 1) JCA Application (completed by JCA Applicant) 2) Parent Letter & Waiver (completed and signed by parent/guardian) 3) Personal Reference Form (completed and submitted by reference) Return application packets to Taylor Witter no later than March 1, 2017. The main site for this program is announced in May with the rest of the summer camp locations. JCA PROGRAM WAIVER & RELEASE Important Information The Northbrook Park District (herein collectively referred to as the District ) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participants safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for this program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities/programs. You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for the activities contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or has recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity. Warning of Risk Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. All hazards and dangers cannot be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks, dangers and injuries may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision, instruction or officiating, and other risks inherent to the particular activity. In this regard, it is impossible for the District to guarantee absolute safety. Photo/Video Policy The Northbrook Park District takes photos and video of participants in classes, during special events and in the parks. By signing the waiver, you are giving permission to the District to use these photos and video in District publications and on our website. All photos and video are the property of the District. Waiver and Release of All Claims and Assumption of Risk Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in this program/activity, you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with this program/activity (including transportation services and vehicle operations, when provided). I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks of physical injury to participants in this program/activity, and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any and all injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity, that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of said participation. I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (or accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the District including its officials, agents, volunteers and employees. This innovative program combines a broad-based leadership curriculum with hands-on work experience. JCA s work not only with fellow Junior Apprentices and participating children, but also with Northbrook Park District staff. This program includes hands on work experience in camps and weekly classes in leadership development, job-related skills and team building exercises. The Junior Counselor Apprenticeship Program can only accommodate a limited number of qualified participants.
