Before-and-After School Routine and Traffic Pattern: In order to reduce the before and after school traffic congestion and to make sure our 15 buses are able to exit the school property in a timely manner, parking in the circle drives is not allowed. We have dedicated the south parking lot for parents to drop-off and pick up students. We cannot have any double parking in this lot so please use ITHS s parking lot closest to the stadium for additional parking. All vehicles will be required to make a right turn onto the main drive between Mahone and Indian Trail when leaving the school s property. Please review the map and make a plan with your child(ren). Open House will be held on Tuesday, August 30 from 5:00 6:00 p.m. We look forward to a successful school year for all of our students. Login to parent portal (www.kusd.edu/portal) to register the student. You must use a computer, a mobile device will not work for registration. If you are unable to make registration, students will have their pictures taken on the first day of school. Student Fees: The middle school fee for students is $72.00. Athletic Fee: The athletic fee for middle school students is $50 per sport with a max of $100 per student. Open House: The Open House for students and parents will be held Tuesday, August 30 from 5:00 6:00 p.m. This is a great time to find your locker, bring in your school supplies, and meet your teachers. School Day Schedule: The Mahone school day will begin promptly at 8:35 a.m. and will end at 3:55 p.m. The school office hours are 7:45 am to 4:15 pm. Students will not be allowed in the building before 8:30 a.m. unless they are going to breakfast. Breakfast begins at 8:00 am. Friday Early Release: Every Friday we will release students at 2:55 pm, except for the Asynchronous Days which are listed below, when there is NO SCHOOL for students. Professional Learning Days: This year middle schools will implement four Professional Learning Days. Students do not report to school on these days, as these days will be used for staff development. The first of these days will be Friday, October 14. The other dates are November 11, February 24, and March 31. Parent Newsletters: We will do a newsletter four times a year starting with September. They will be posted on our Mahone website. http//:mahone.kusd.edu Academic Interventions: We expect our students to do their work every day. A work ethic of honest effort every day provides a solid foundation for success. Most of our students do their work on time. However, for those students who struggle to accomplish this, we have a series of supportive interventions. Among these are homework lunch, where students have a working lunch in a small group to finish their homework, before and afterschool homework help (Tuesday-Thursday). After School Homework Help: The library will be open on Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:55 4:50 p.m. for students who need additional help with school assignments. Student Schedules: All students will receive their schedules during registration. Please look them over with your child and if there are any concerns regarding any classes, please call the office at 359-8100. The office staff will try to address your concern and get your student s schedule corrected prior to the start of school. PTSA: The first PTSA meeting will be September 12, 2016 at 5:30pm in the library. Student IDs: All students will receive an ID and lanyard that will be used to validate their status at Mahone, to check out library materials, to purchase lunch and to get them into athletic/social events at Mahone. All students are required to wear them at all times during the school day. Replacement costs for ID s are $1.00. The lanyard and plastic holder are $.50 each. School Lunch: Our school has an excellent lunch program and offers many choices for students. Students use their student ID as their account number and money is debited from their account according to what they eat each day. Envelopes for deposits will be available during registration. Pre-payments should be turned in before school each morning. Ala Carte items are also available at various costs. The A-Line lunch for students is $2.80 per day. If you would like to check your balance of your account anytime, please call 359-7893 and have your student ID number on hand. School Breakfast: School breakfast is available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. each day. Prepayments should be turned in to the office before school each morning. The cost of breakfast is $1.50. All students will be expected to return outside after they have finished breakfast.

Bus Information: Bus passes and route information will be given out during registration. Any questions need to be directed to the Office of Transportation at 359-6391. Students are assigned to either a yellow or a city bus and are expected to ride that bus only. Girls Softball: Girls in all grade levels are invited to try out for the Mahone softball team on Monday, August 29 th at 4:00 p.m. All students who try out must have a current athletic physical dated on or after April 1, 2015 on file, as well as all of the required athletic paperwork turned in. All forms can be found on the Mahone website. All forms and fees must be turned into the office by August 5 th. The parent meeting for softball is August 1 st at 6:00 p.m. in Mahone s cafeteria. Football: Boys in all grade levels are invited to join the Mahone football team. Sixth graders are permitted to participate, provided they are over 100 lbs. before putting equipment on. The parent meeting will be held on Monday, August 8 th at 6:00 p.m. in the Mahone auditorium. All paperwork including a physical dated on or after April 1, 2015 must be turned in to the main office by Friday, August 12. All forms can be found on the Mahone website. The first day of practice will be Monday, August 15 from 4:00 6:30 p.m. Supply Lists: The school supply list for all middle school students is enclosed in this mailing. Medication: Over the counter medication requires the parent signature only. Any prescription medication needs to have both the doctor and the parent signature. Medication will be dispensed at school only after this form has been completed and turned in to the office. Forms are available on the KUSD website as well as in the school office. Attendance: The attendance line is 359-8101. Please use this number to leave any absence information regarding your child. We ask that all absences be reported first thing in the morning (or before noon if possible). If your child has a doctor or dentist appointment, please bring in a slip from the doctor or dentist in order for the absence to be excused. Gym Clothes: All students are required to wear appropriate physical education attire which includes tennis shoes that tie, athletic shorts that are at least finger tip length and a t-shirt with a proper neckline during gym class. You are not allowed to participate in gym if you are not dressed appropriately. Immunizations: Enclosed in this packet are the immunization requirements which require additional vaccinations for incoming sixth graders. If your student has not had the chicken pox, they will need a second Varicella. All sixth graders also need the Tdap shot. Failure to comply may result in exclusion from school. Bus Conduct: Because of the location of Mahone, many students ride the bus. This is considered a privilege by the District that may be taken away when a student becomes a disciplinary or safety concern. The District s Code of Conduct applies on the bus just as it does at school. Mahone Web Page: The Mahone web site can be accessed from http://mahone.kusd.edu From here you can find a list of our faculty, contact numbers, important announcements, upcoming events, school activities, classroom projects and also revisit material about the history and practices of our school. Email is also a convenient method of reaching teachers and administration without interrupting class. Phone Use/Student Messages: With the population at nearly 1200 students, it is becoming increasingly difficult to handle personal telephone messages to students. Please make arrangements for after school pick-up prior to the school day. We ask that phone messages be restricted to emergencies only. We will not deliver messages on a daily basis for students. Also, if you receive a call from the main number and do not have a voicemail, please do not call the office asking who called. All phone lines show the main number and we will not interrupt classes to find out who called or why. Drop Off/Pick Up: For those parents who drive their students to/from school, we ask that you not drop off your student prior to 8:10 a.m. unless they are involved in a student club or school activity. Also, parents are not allowed to park in our circle drive to wait to pick up their child. The south end parking lot is reserved for

parents to park in and wait for their child. Staff members will be instructing people to move their cars if they are parked in the circle drive. Lockers: Students will be given lockers for their personal use. Do not give your locker combination to others! Our lockers are designed to be theft proof unless someone knows your combination. The padlocks on each locker is the property of the school. If the padlocks are lost, a $5.00 charge will be assessed to the student to get a new padlock. Electronic Devices: Also, please be aware that students take a risk when they bring personal valuable items to school such as cell phones, hand held video games, IPODS, etc. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Cell Phones: Although cell phones are allowed at school, they may not be used during the school day. Due to the disruptions in class when cell phones are activated, they will be confiscated and held in the main office for a parent to pick up. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen phones. PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES: Our first parent teacher conferences will be held on October 11 from 5 7 p.m., Thursday, October 13 from 5-7 p.m., and Friday, October 14 from 8-11 a.m. Sign-up sheets for specific times will be available on our website. Allergy Friendly School: Food allergies can be life threatening. We are trying to reduce students with food allergies to accidental exposure by providing an Allergy Friendly learning environment. With this in mind, we are trying to keep all food related celebrations out of our Allergy Friendly Areas and have students make sure that their faces and hands are food free in designated classrooms. Outside Food at School: We are asking that parents follow the U.S.D.A. s practice, science-based nutrition standards for food purchased and brought to school for lunch. Please limit your child from brining in snacks that exceed 200 calories or meals that exceed 350 calories. Sugary drinks and energy drinks are not allowed. Flavored coffees, lattes, etc. will not be allowed in the learning environment. Please have your students leave them in the car as you drop them off at school. Fast Food at School for lunch: We are asking parents to refrain from bringing in fast food for your child at lunch time. This type of food in the cafeteria is a disruption to the other students in the cafeteria. If it is brought in, we will call your child up and have them eat in the office area. Parties or Celebrations at School: Please do not bring in cupcakes, pizza, etc. for your child to share with friends at lunch or in the classroom. We would love to celebrate your child s birthday with them but a limited number of cupcakes, pizza, etc. only creates disruption in the lunchroom and classroom for the 400 other students who are not receiving the treats. If food is brought in, we will hold it in the office for you to pick up and take home. This also follows the new U.S.D.A. s guidelines regarding food brought to school. Intramural Program: Mahone s intramural program offers soccer, volleyball and basketball. Intramural forms will be available at registration in August. The Kenosha Unified School District No. 1 is an Equal Opportunity Educator/Employer with established policies prohibiting discrimination on the basis of age, race, creed, religion, color, sex, national origin, disability or handicap, sexual orientation, or political affiliation in any educational program, activity, or employment in the District. The Superintendent of Schools/designee (262-359-6320) addresses questions regarding student discrimination, and the Executive Director of Human Resources (262-359- 6333) answers questions concerning staff discrimination.
