Introduction All the design elements and progressions are based on Long Term Participant Development (LTPD). The LTPD model is predicated on the idea that each of physiological, mental/cognitive, and emotional development must be identified and taken into account when developing his optimal training, competition and recovery program. LTPD is inclusive: the principles which underpin LTPD are equally applicable to people of all ages and abilities whether they are participating in elite sport or recreational physical activity. The men's Levels Syllabus is aimed at catering for medium to long term recreational gymnasts. MAG's Levels Syllabus is suitable for boys: 8 years and older Who can commit to 120 to 180 minutes of moderate training per session 2 to 4 times per week; Who practice gymnastics year round and enjoy one or two additional seasonal sports; Who will be Active for Life The Levels Syllabus conforms to contemporary gymnastics and includes basic routines and skills performed on all apparatuses. It accommodates many gymnasts and coaches of varying abilities and with a variety of facilities at their disposal. Progress through the Levels Syllabus is skills based - a gymnast may progress to the next level once he is able to satisfactorily perform the skills in his current level. This syllabus is progressive in the way that the physical conditioning and skills in one level provides the basis for the skills in the next level. Last but not least, thank you to those regions and clubs that helped us test the water and gave us invaluable feedback, and an opportunity to fine-tune this work. Age Groups An Overview Each Level is sub-divided into age groups in order to increase the number of competitive sections. Ages are taken as of 1 January in the year of competition, as noted on page 11 Prescribed Routines All routines are judged out of points and have the possibility of an additional 0.60 points in bonus for difficulty. Routine Construction The routines have been developed to try and include all basic elements, and should serve as a guide to coaches. A majority of the bonus elements in each Level become required elements within the routines of the following Levels. Each routine has been constructed to try and include elements (modified or otherwise) from all the structure groups as they appear in the FIG Code of Points. Expectations Average gymnasts (the majority) - we expect these gymnasts to spend two years in each Level. Above average gymnasts - we expect these gymnasts to spend one year in each Level. Layout There are NO DRAWINGS of the routines. You will notice that the routine descriptions are very precise (and sometimes long-winded), but this has been done to attempt to clarify. Where possible we have always tried to use the FIG wording and terminology in our routine descriptions as found in the Code of Points (this should also facilitate cross-referencing). Where possible, we have divided the routines into the maximum number of separate sequences each with their own difficulty value. These difficulty values will facilitate judging a gymnast who is unable to perform an element, or leaves out a portion of the routine, or does not complete his routine. Bonus Elements The possibility to achieve bonus points exists in various forms: Upgrading an element Modifying an element Adding an element Increasing amplitude, strength or flexibility Bonus elements or the bonus requirement are indicated in bold type between brackets within the routine description. Bonus points will be awarded when the bonus element is attempted and achieved without any single large error. Judging All routines are judged as per the FIG Code of Points - an abridged version is available as an addendum to this manual. As a result, there are NO DEDUCTIONS listed with each routine. The lists of general deductions and those specific to each apparatus will be found in the Rules section of the manual and the abridged version of the Code of Points. However, there is a general list of deductions for Levels 1-3 addressing common problem areas on Page 13 It is very important that the gymnasts and coaches pay attention to proper technical execution of skills. In this regard judges can have an enormous impact on the development of proper technique by awarding credit for skills when properly executed and by deducting appropriately for improper technique. Such evaluation should only take place in the context of the FIG Code of Points - contemporary techniques should be understood and deductions should not be invented. Version 14.0 Final Page 5 of 44

Coaching This syllabus contains a development structure to steer coaches into deliberately preparing gymnasts with the necessary skills to enable them to cope with the demands of competitive gymnastics. Gymnasts must strive to perform the required skills (elements) with excellence while developing the skills for the next Level. It is commonly accepted that good form and clean routines will be successful. To ensure safe, enjoyable, and memorable experiences for gymnasts the SAGF recommends that participants use the national syllabi guided by appropriately accredited coaches in affiliated clubs. Specialists Gymnasts not yet ready on all apparatuses may participate on fewer apparatuses at Provincial, Regional, District, and/or Club competitions Competitions Rules 1. Only gymnasts registered with the South African Gymnastics Federation may learn, practice, and compete routines from the Levels Syllabus. 1.1. An exception is made for gymnasts registered in Zone 6 countries. 2. All competitions will be judged according to the latest edition of the FIG Code of Points. Rules of Participation 3. Competitions may be arranged by SAGF affiliated Provinces, Regions, Districts, and/or Clubs. 4. Each Level is divided into age groups: ages are taken as at 1 January in the year of competition. 5. A gymnast must compete in the youngest age group relevant to his chronological age. Example: An 11 year old gymnast in Level 4 may not participate in the 13-17 year old age group, as there is an 11-12 year old section more closely matched to his age. Version 14.0 Final Page 6 of 44

6. A gymnast entering the individual All-Around competition in Levels 1 through 3 must perform prescribed routines on the Floor, Vault, Parallel Bars, and Low Bar. A gymnast entering the individual All-Around competition in Levels 4 through 7 must perform prescribed routines on the Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings, Vault (Levels 5-7 perform one of the prescribed vaults), Parallel Bars, and Horizontal Bar. Level 8 performs optional routines. 8.1. The sum of the final marks from all four apparatuses in Levels 1-3 and the sum of the final marks from all six apparatuses in Levels 4-8 determines the individual All-Around rankings in each age-group. The winner in each age-group has the highest individual All-Around score. 9. The highest final mark for each apparatus determines the winner for that apparatus. 10. No ties will be broken. Qualification/Specialisation 11. Specialisation in Levels 1-7 and Classes HP 1-2 is not permitted at the National competition. 11.1. Classes HP 4-5 specialists must qualify by obtaining both the prescribed and optional scores listed above. Version 14.0 Final Page 7 of 44

Progression/Regression 12. The Level into which a gymnast is entered remains entirely at the discretion of the coach notwithstanding the gymn score or Level at previous competitions. 13. A gymnast may only participate at the Zone Festivals or Gym Games in the Level for which he qualified. 14. A gymnast should only be entered into a Level for which he is suitably prepared to participate safely. Dress 15. Gymnasts competing in Levels 4 through 8 and Classes HP 1-5 must participate in FIG regulation competition attire. 16. Rights and duties of the gymnast during competition are as per the FIG Code of Points. Warm-ups 17. General warm-up should be for a minimum of 15 minutes - not including grouping and numbering of the gymnasts. 18. Apparatus warm-up prior to the competition should be calculated at 1.5 minutes per gymnast of the largest group per apparatus. 19 one-touch is permitted during the competition for prescribed routines. Coaches 20. Coaches must be formally accredited for the Level in which they wish to assist on the competition floor. 21. Coaches must be dressed neatly in the appropriate tracksuit and foot wear. NO SHORTS ALLOWED. 22. Rights and duties of the coach during competition are as per the FIG Code of Points. Appeals 23. Appeals are allowed. Only the Start Value of an exercise may be questioned. 24. The appeal, together with R100, must be submitted by the Team Manager/Coach to the Competition Manager before resumption of the competition in the next rotation. 25. If it is the last rotation then the appeal must be submitted within 5 minutes after the end of the competition. Apparatus 26. The heights of apparatuses for different age groups appear on page 12, otherwise refer to the FIG Code of Points. 27. Supplementary mats, modified apparatus and starting aids may be utilised where stated on page 12 28. All mounts must be performed as per FIG rules, except where stated on the apparatus specifications page (page 12) Judging 29. If a move (except dismount) is attempted and not achieved it may be repeated to regain the value. Relevant deductions will be taken for extra swings, falls and errors in execution. 30. Should a gymnast perform a ZERO vault, as defined by the FIG, he may repeat it once with a deduction of 1.00 point from the value of the second attempt. No more attempts are permitted. 31. Execution deductions for specific skills may exceed a given assigned (difficulty) value. 32. Prescribed routines must be executed exactly as prescribed. The routine may, however, be changed from left to right bias in its totality. 33. In a prescribed routine, if the gymnasts leave out a skill, deduct: The assigned value of the element (from the Difficulty score) This does not apply to simple steps, turns or arm movements i.e. elements without a difficulty value Leaving out simple steps, turns or arm movements will incur a small deduction each time. 34. Where the floor exercise states 2-3 running there is no limit to running steps in these instances. Gymnasts performing elements and turns on the incorrect side, which result in a change in exercise pattern/routine construction, will incur a medium penalty (from the final score). RULES SHOULD NOT BE MISINTERPRETED BY TAKING THEM IN ISOLATION, BUT MUST BE READ IN THE CONTEXT OF THE COMPLETE DOCUMENT. Version 14.0 Final Page 9 of 44

J General All junior routines are judged using the Code of Points. An abridged version of the Code of Points is available as an addendum to this manual (the FIG version is available from www.fig-gymnastics.com). The version contained in this manual covers all rules regarding judging in general, judging as an E-jury member, and additional rules for the judging of compulsory routines. All rules regarding Difficulty and Start Value, and the difficulty tables are excluded. These will be found in the full version of the Code of Points. We have tried to number the Articles in the abridged version with the same Article numbers as the full version of the Code of Points. As a result you will notice This is intentional as the missing Articles refer to Start Value, Difficulty and D-jury. By maintaining the same Article numbers for both versions, we hope to facilitate reference regardless of which version a judge is using. Additional Articles and wording included for the purpose of judging compulsory exercises are printed in italics. These will not be found in the FIG Code of Points. Courses Regions wishing to present courses at the various levels must apply with the MTC Administrator. Courses must be presented by approved Course Leaders (facilitators) and are therefore subject to the availability of Course Leaders. Previous Qualifications In each and every FIG cycle all existing judges are required to re-qualify at the various levels. This re-qualification will include examinations. All judges, regardless of level, are required to be registered members of the SAGF and must judge at least 6 competitions in a two-year period and 12 competitions each cycle to keep their qualification valid.
