Distance Education Enhancing the educational experiences for distance learning students was necessary to ensure that distance learning students had access to teaching and learning experiences and services parallel to face-to-face teaching. The Center for Distance Learning (CDL) staff has made efforts to enhance not only the academic degree programs offered, but also the services provided to distance learning students. Distance learning students can register for distance learning courses online or by visiting the CDL Office. Instructions on paying their bill, how to apply for an NCA&TSU email account, login instructions, and the Blackboard link to classes are published on the University and on the CDL websites, http://www.ncat.edu/ and http://www.ncat.edu/academics/distance-learning/index.html. Additionally, the Division of Information Technology created a non-credit online Student Orientation Course to provide potential and current NCA&TSU students with information about Blackboard and online learning in general. It contains short, interactive video tutorials and other engaging materials. Furthermore, students are able to pay their bill online using Web for Students (Aggie Access Online) and have the opportunity to access the University Bookstore online to purchase textbooks without visiting the campus. The Bookstore also accepts credit card information via email or fax. Positive working relationships between CDL and areas such as the Registrar s Office, the Treasurer s Office, University Bookstore, Admissions, Graduate School, and the Library have been established to provide better services and information to distance learning students. The Program Assistant works to assist distance learning students with registration, course information, processing tuition and fees for special populations, processing drop and withdrawal requests, and answering questions regarding the academic service provider and their online courses. To enhance quality of services received by distance learning students, the Office of Institutional Research (IR) administers the confidential student opinion survey which students complete at the end of the semester. Distance learning students utilize this online survey tool to provide feedback regarding their experiences with the course, instructor, course management system, and with selected University service units. IR compiles student comments and concerns and distributes reports to all units involved. These comments are used to identify specific student needs and concerns and make revisions, where possible, to increase retention in distance learning courses.

Taskstream During the 2010-2011 academic year, the decision was made to transition from LiveText to Taskstream. The Unit began the implementation of Taskstream in the 2011-2012 academic year. Taskstream is a cloud-based tool for effective assessment and accountability. The assessment plan for initial and advanced programs is formalized and continuously revised in the platform through the Unit s Assessment Committee and Teacher Education Council. All teacher education assessment processes from admission to teacher education to applying for licensure through major content evidences, field experiences, and clinical practice are completed in Taskstream (6.4.j._). University faculty and cooperating teachers from partnership schools receive complimentary Taskstream accounts while candidates purchase a subscription for four years (undergraduate) or two years (graduate). Four-year subscriptions cost $104 and two-year subscriptions cost $69. A limited number of complimentary accounts are available for candidates who demonstrate financial need. Since 2011, about 290 faculty and cooperating teachers have subscribed to Taskstream to evaluate work submitted by candidates. Since 2011, about 324 graduate candidates and 265 undergraduate candidates have purchased Taskstream to engage in the assessment process of the Unit. The unit subscribes to Lynda.com, a web-based service that hosts thousands of training videos taught by industry experts for the purpose of targeted training for specific topics. In addition, the Unit has a Vimeo Pro account to host training videos for faculty and students that are produced in-house.
