FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT The GIS Training and Research Center (GIS TReC) at Idaho State University maintains a staff of personnel with knowledge, skills, and abilities across a wide spectrum of Geographic Information Science. The University's GIS Director and team leader of the GIS TReC, Keith T. Weber is a Certified GIS Professional (GISP) with over 40 peer-reviewed professional publications to his credit. Together with other staff scientists there exists over four decades of experience in applied GIS research and multispectral satellite remote sensing analysis. The GIS TReC staff has tremendous experience in effective geodatabase design following an end-user or client-centric paradigm, along with the production, configuration, and maintenance of geodatabases. In addition, data security is a paramount concern and the GIS TReC s Systems Administrator keeps informed of current requirements, policies, and future trends. The GIS TReC Server constellation is very well secured with only two staff members having physical access to these machines. In addition, the entire server constellation is distinct from all other computers by segmenting these machines into their own subnet. Passwords to gain access to the servers adhere to the most stringent guidelines and policies and mission critical data is routinely archived to a second off-site server. The GIS TReC has been awarded the prestigious Esri Special Achievements in GIS (SAG) award. This honor was bestowed upon only 150 sites (chosen from among over 300,000 user sites worldwide) in 2000 and again in 2013. The GIS TReC uses and maintains the following equipment to support its research efforts: GEOSPATIAL SERVER INFRASTRUCTURE 1. Enterprise GIS Server constellation: These servers each have a functional role within the GIS TReC and fulfill a part of the Center s research mission. This server constellation represents an investment approaching $0.5M GIS Web Server and ArcGIS License Server: Dell PowerEdge 2650 server running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition with hardware RAID-5 153 GB hot-swappable SCSI hard drives and 1 Xeon 1.76GHz CPU with 1GB SDRAM. This computer serves all licenses for Idaho State University including not only the Pocatello campus, but campuses in Idaho Falls and Meridian as well. Spatial Library Server: Dell PowerEdge 2950 running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition with hardware RAID-5 1.8 TB hot-swappable SCSI hard drives and 2 Intel Quad Core XCL 2.66 GHz CPUs with 16 GB SDRAM and hot-swappable redundant power supplies. The Spatial Library offers nearly 50,000 geospatial datasets, most of which are freely accessible (unless otherwise restricted due to licensing or legal concerns). LiDAR Spatial Library: Dell PowerEdge R510 server running Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS Enterprise edition with hardware RAID-5 4.7 TB hot-swappable SAS hard drives and 1 Intel Xeon 2.53 GHz CPU with 12 GB SDRAM and hot-swappable redundant power supplies. The on-site server constellation is backed up by two APC 3000 SmartUPS devices, powered through two discrete Idaho Power incoming electrical lines. During complete power failure, these server can continue running for nearly 24 hours. Archive Server (Off-Site): Dell PowerEdge 2800 server running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition with hardware RAID-5 2.2TB hot-swappable SCSI hard drives and 1 Xeon 3.0GHz CPU with 2 GB SDRAM GPS Server (Off-Site): Dell XPS 600 workstation running Windows 7 Enterprise edition with 465 GB hard drive and 1 Intel Pentium D 3.46 GHz CPU with 2 GB RAM Gigabit Ethernet deployed to all workstations and servers. A dark-fiber network is used to connect the GIS TReC to the ISU backbone. ISU is an Internet2 University that also uses the Idaho Regional Optical Network (IRON) to support collaborative research outside ISU. GEOSPATIAL RESEARCH DATA 1. SCOPE single, centralized geodatabase repository containing de-identified point data information along with regional prepared food sites, roads, sidewalks, parks, and other built environmental data layers. This geodatabase has been developed to SCOPE research. These data reside off-line on an encrypted and non-network attached, secure system.
