FACTS AND FIGURES Tampere is the biggest inland city in Finland and the Nordic countries... in the whole of Tampere nestles in the midst of beautiful scenery with lakes and ridges, on a narrow strip of land between Lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The first settlements in the area date back to the th century, but Tampere was officially founded by King Gustav III exactly 0 years ago. Tampere became the first industrial town in Finland as a result of the construction of the Finlayson cotton mill in the 0 s. Finlayson was the first large-scale industrial enterprise in Finland and it was also the place where the first electric light bulb in the Nordic countries was lit. The red brick buildings of Finlayson and Tampella industries as well as the lush parks along the banks of the Tammerkoski Rapids are still characteristic of the heart of the city.... and the capital of the whole Tampere region Tampere is home to more than 00,000 people. Structural changes within industries turned Tampere into a centre of modern technology, research, education, culture, sport and business. It is also the heart of the lively Tampere region, which is home to almost half a million people. The region attracts more and more people and is one of Finland s fastest growing regional centres. Tampere is also a pioneer in developing municipal administration. The location of Tampere within this country of some million people and thousands of lakes is ideal in many ways. The capital city of Helsinki is only 0 kilometres away and the big ports of the Gulf of Bothnia are even closer. The city is becoming more and more international every day and there are already almost 0,000 foreigners from about 00 different countries living in Tampere. Swedish is the second official language of Finland. DUBLIN LONDON STOCKHOLM COPENHAGEN BREMEN FRANKFURT TAMPERE ST. Finland s first female architect Wivi Lönn was born in Tampere and her work includes the Pyynikki school (0) and the Alexander school (0), for example. When talking about architecture in Tampere, Bertel Strömmer as well as Raili and Reima Pietilä must also be mentioned. In his heyday in around the 0 s, Strömmer designed the Grand Hotel Tammer (), the electricity utility building () and the Tempo commercial building (), for example. When Strömmer was asked what style the Grand Hotel Tammer represents, he replied offhandedly: It s pure Strömmerism.... Raili and Reima Pietilä are significant architects of more recent years. Their designs include Kaleva church, the famous Metso main library and Hervanta activity, leisure and shopping centre. Metso main library

The Children s Zoo is the home of familiar and some more exotic animals too, from puppies and bunny rabbits to alpacas and pot-bellied pigs. The dolphins in the only Dolphinarium in Finland play basketball, walk on their tails and show off their skills every day. The Aquarium houses more than 00 species including an electric eel, piranhas as well as Finnish fish of course. The Planetarium offers a new astronomical programme every year. The Sara Hildén Art Museum has its own works of contemporary art and changing exhibitions and is also located in the park.
