74C/CT181 FETURES Full carry look-ahead for high-speed arithmetic operation on long words Provides 16 arithmetic operations: add, subtract, compare, double, plus 12 others Provides all 16 logic operations of two variables: EXCUSIVE-OR, compare, ND, NND, NOR, OR plus 10 other logic operations Output capability: I CC category: MSI GENER DESCRIPTION standard, =B open drain The 74C/CT181 are high-speed Si-gate CMOS devices and are pin compatible with low power Schottky TT (STT). They are specified in compliance with JEDEC standard no. 7. The 74C/CT181 are 4-bit high-speed parallel rithmetic ogic Units (U). Controlled by the four function select inputs (S 0 to S 3 ) and the mode control input (M), they can perform all the 16 possible logic operations or 16 erent arithmetic operations on active IG or active OW operands (see function table). When the mode control input (M) is IG, all internal carries are inhibited and the device3 performs logic operations on the individual bits as listed. When M is OW, the carries are enabled and the 181 performs arithmetic operations on the two 4-bit words. The 181 incorporates full internal carry look-ahead and provides for either ripple carry between devices using the C n+4 output, or for carry look-ahead between packages using the carry (P) and carry generate (G) signals. P and G are not affected by carry in. When speed requirements are not stringent, it can be used in a simple ripple carry mode by connecting the carry output (C n+4 ) signal to the carry input (C n ) of the next unit. For high-speed operation the device is used in conjunction with the 182 carry look-ahead circuit. One carry look-ahead package is required for each group of four 181 devices. Carry look-ahead can be provided at various levels and offers high-speed capability over extremely long word lengths. The comparator output (=B) of the device goes IG when all four function outputs (F 0 to F 3 ) are IG and can be used to indicate logic equivalence over 4 bits when the unit is in the subtract mode. =B is an open collector output and can be wired-nd with other =B outputs to give a comparison for more than 4 bits. The open drain output =B should be used with an external pull-up resistor in order to establish a logic IG level. The =B signal can also be used with the C n+4 signal to indicate > B and < B. The function table lists the arithmetic operations that are performed without a carry in. n incoming carry adds a one to each operation. Thus, select code generates minus B minus 1 (2s complement notation) without a carry in and generates minus B when a carry is applied. Because subtraction is actually performed by complementary addition (1s complement), a carry out means borrow; thus, a carry is generated when there is no under-flow and no carry is generated when there is underflow. s indicated, the 181 can be used with either active OW inputs producing active OW outputs or with active IG inputs producing active IG outputs. For either case the table lists the operations that are performed to the operands. 74C/CT181 SODERING Introduction There is no soldering method that is ideal for all IC packages. Wave soldering is often preferred when through-hole and surface mounted components are mixed on one printed-circuit board. owever, wave soldering is not always suitable for surface mounted ICs, or for printed-circuits with high population densities. In these situations reflow soldering is often used. This text gives a very brief insight to a complex technology. more in-depth account of soldering ICs can be found in our Data andbook IC26; Integrated Circuit Packages (order code 9398 652 90011). DIP SODERING BY DIPPING OR BY WVE The maximum permissible temperature of the solder is 260 C; solder at this temperature must not be in contact with the joint for more than 5 seconds. The total contact time of successive solder waves must not exceed 5 seconds. The device may be mounted up to the seating plane, but the temperature of the plastic body must not exceed the specified maximum storage temperature (T stg max ). If the printed-circuit board has been pre-heated, forced cooling may be necessary immediately after soldering to keep the temperature within the permissible limit. REPIRING SODERED JOINTS pply a low voltage soldering iron (less than 24 V) to the lead(s) of the package, below the seating plane or not more than 2 mm above it. If the temperature of the soldering iron bit is less than 300 C it may remain in contact for up to 10 seconds. If the bit temperature is between 300 and 400 C, contact may be up to 5 seconds. SO REFOW SODERING Reflow soldering techniques are suitable for all SO packages. Reflow soldering requires solder paste (a suspension of fine solder particles, flux and binding agent) to be applied to the printed-circuit board by screen printing, stencilling or pressure-syringe dispensing before package placement. Several techniques exist for reflowing; for example, thermal conduction by heated belt. Dwell times vary between 50 and 300 seconds depending on heating method. Typical reflow temperatures range from 215 to 250 C. Preheating is necessary to dry the paste and evaporate the binding agent. Preheating duration: 45 minutes at 45 C. WVE SODERING Wave soldering techniques can be used for all SO packages if the following conditions are observed: double-wave (a turbulent wave with high upward pressure followed by a smooth laminar wave) soldering technique should be used. The longitudinal axis of the package footprint must be parallel to the solder flow. The package footprint must incorporate solder thieves at the downstream end. During placement and before soldering, the package must be fixed with a droplet of adhesive. The adhesive can be applied by screen printing, pin transfer or syringe dispensing. The package can be soldered after the adhesive is cured. Maximum permissible solder temperature is 260 C, and maximum duration of package immersion in solder is 10 seconds, if cooled to less than 150 C within 6 seconds. Typical dwell time is 4 seconds at 250 C. mildly-activated flux will eliminate the need for removal of corrosive residues in most applications. REPIRING SODERED JOINTS Fix the component by first soldering two diagonallyopposite end leads. Use only a low voltage soldering iron (less than 24 V) applied to the flat part of the lead. Contact time must be limited to 10 seconds at up to 300 C. When using a dedicated tool, all other leads can be soldered in one operation within 2 to 5 seconds between 270 and 320 C. 1998 Jun 10 19
