Reflecting on Sunday Readings September 27, 2015 It has often been said that it is not the size or nature of the gift which is important; it is the attitude in which it is given. It is what is in one s heart that is important. There are many quotes about this kind of giving, including that wonderful line in the Prayer of St. Francis, It is in giving that we receive. Jesus makes reference to the importance of giving in today s Gospel from St. Mark: Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. Giving a cup of water may not seem significant to us, but to God, who sees into our very hearts, it can be of great consequence. The keys are that the gifts are given out of love, not pity or guilt or because we may be blessed with excess. And they are given in Jesus name. Giving, especially of self, is a sign of our commitment to being a disciple of Jesus and as a sign that we truly Love our neighbor. Giving in this way is at the nucleus of stewardship. However, it can only be achieved if we have undergone a conversion of heart which leads us to understand that it is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving. The Bishop s Annual Appeal I would like to personally appeal to the parishioners of St. John the Evangelist Parish to make an extra effort to support our diocese by contributing to the Bishop s Annual Appeal. In the past St. John has always met the goal. The goal for this year is $82,933.00. So far the parishioners at St. John have pledged $60,144.00, much of which has been paid. We have fallen short of our goal this year. Only 22.84% of parishioners have made a contribution or a pledge. By and large the Bishop s Annual Appeal pays for the education of seminarians (our future priests) and for the many pastoral services that are housed at the pastoral center in Savannah. The pastoral services that are housed in Savannah spend much time out of the office and into the parishes to offer support. The majority of the parishes in the Diocese of Savannah are small and not able to support themselves financially. The services that they receive from the pastoral center help to compensate for personnel otherwise out of reach, to help pastors in their tireless roles to the rural counties. The St. Francis Center here in Valdosta receives $7,800.00 annually to help us fight poverty. The salaries of two of our pastors here in the diocese are paid by the Catholic Extension society in Chicago. In effect, we are on ecclesial welfare. The Diocese of Savannah is a missionary diocese, not simply a diocese with a few missions. The Church exists for the propagation of the faith and for the salvation of souls. In order to carry out the mission of the Church financial aid is needed. Please consider making a donation to the Bishop s Annual Appeal. Great donations and small donations together will help to close the gap that still remains with our parish goal. I am grateful for those who have made a contribution and I would appeal to those who have not to help the diocese to further propagate the Catholic faith in South Georgia. Gratefully, Fr. Brian Stewardship Renewal is THIS MONTH! Last weekend we kicked off our Stewardship Renewal with Lay Witness speakers. This past week you should have received your Stewardship packet in the mail These materials explain what Stewardship means at St. John and the many ways you can get involved. Please pray about your role in our parish and discern how you can make a commitment of time, talent and treasure. Ministry Fair, Sunday September 27 After the Noon Mass this weekend join us at school playground to learn about all the vibrant ministries and activities here at our parish and how you and your family can get involved! This coincides with the Parish Picnic please plan to spend some time with your parish family and enjoy the playground and bounce house with the kids! Commitment Sunday October 3/4 Please bring your family s Stewardship Renewal card to Mass this weekend! 6
