Hello! I m so glad you picked up this booklet. This booklet is an introduction and guide to Big Data Analytics (BDA). Here, you will learn how BDA can benefit you. There are two sections; the first is an illustrated story about how BDA can benefit our country, followed by a more in-depth explanation on how BDA works. Big Data Analytics 3

Let s take a trip through different sections of the city before & after BDA. 4 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 5

COMMUNITIES Without BDA 1 People only visit the doctor after they feel sick, when an illness may have already taken a toll on their body. 3 2 The bus takes forever to arrive. When it does arrive, it s full. People have to be very careful about their personal details because there are many cases of fraud both online and offline. 6 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 7

COMMUNITIES with BDA The hospital called me recently to visit them for a blood test. They are concerned that my cough is actually worse than it appears. Taking public transport now is so easy. A single app on my smartphone allows me to locate the nearest bus stop which provides the expected time of arrival. I can plan my train ride when I know where to change stations and the expected duration of my whole journey. As a resident, I feel safe travelling around the city and going online knowing that my personal details and finances are protected by the government. 8 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 9

Communities & BDA COMMUNITIES & BDA With constant connectivity to the information grid, you can track public transport updates in real-time, to know when and where it will be arriving. As you are waiting you can check to see if there is space for additional passengers. You can also be informed of any changes in the route and where to go for your pick up. When this system is linked up with traffic control, taking public transport will be a breeze. Personal and financial security is important. With security algorithms set in place to detect potential fraud and safeguard citizen finances, governments can prevent potential losses to their people. As a bonus, the system can detect problems with citizen cash flow, and assistance can be provided before the situation becomes worse. Predictive analysis in the medical community will allow doctors to better spot disease patterns, improve patient recovery time and take necessary measures to prevent epidemics before they can happen. 10 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 11

BUSINESSES Without BDA 3 b Businesses lose returning customers by being unable to cater to their needs. 1 2 Many companies collect data about their customers, but they don t know what to do with it. Demand fluctuates and often stock goes bad or becomes outdated while sitting on the shelf. 12 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 13

BUSINESSES with BDA That shopping mall keeps track of my preferences and lets me know when they have promotions for my favourite items. a That company helps analyse data from other companies to help other businesses understand how their customers behave. That grocer never runs out of stock. They have a system that warns them of increased demand so they know when to stock up. Their products are always fresh. 14 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 15

Business & BDA BUSINESSES & BDA a BDA allows businesses to check for potential rises in demand. When demand is higher than supply, companies may lose customers as they struggle to bring in more goods on time. Perishables need to be sold within a timeframe or wastage occurs, resulting in even more losses. BDA minimizes that problem with predictive analytics, ensuring that you always have the right amount of stock. Analysts can now spend more time looking for insights instead of sifting through mounds of meaningless data. Businesses with predictive analytics have the ability to observe customer patterns in real-time, providing a strong advantage over those without. New marketing campaigns can now be rolled out in days instead of weeks or months. A number of companies have successfully used BDA to keep track of their customers browsing habits both online and in stores. By providing incentives or customized packages based on their insights to customers, these companies have increased their sales by up to 70% in comparison to their traditional operations. 16 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 17

GOVERNMENT Without BDA 3 The street lights are switched on all night wasting electricity even though there is no one around. 1 Daily traffic jams cause unnecessary delays and waste valuable time for everyone. Crime rate is still high despite the best efforts of the police. 2 18 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 19

GOVERNMENT with BDA Do you see those streetlights? They brighten up when they detect movements but dim when no one is around. The new traffic control system helps reduce road congestion in the city so that everyone can get to work on time. Crime rate has really dropped around here ever since the police started showing up before the crimes even happened. It s almost as if they can read the criminals minds. 20 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 21

Goverment & BDA GOVERNMENT & BDA Smart traffic management systems would be able to see traffic flow in real time. With highly accurate simulations and predictive analysis, the system will reduce road congestion and identify threats on the road. Getting cars to their destination faster reduces both pollution and fuel consumption. A network of smart streetlights with sensors can be designed to operate with minimal power until they are actually needed. Implementation in Norway has seen electrical use for lighting drop by 62%. BDA is a powerful tool when used in predictive analysis. Police in Memphis have managed to drop serious crime by 31% by acting on insight gotten from crime patterns. By being in the right place at the right time, police made increased arrests and preventing further crime. 22 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 23

M Now you know what BDA can achieve, let s take an in-depth look at it. 24 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 25

The Definition of BDA What is Big Data? Big Data is a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using traditional data processing applications. Challenges include capture, storage, search, sharing, analysis and visualisation. Wikipedia The 4 V's of Big Data Volume Growing quantity of data (e.g. social media, behavioral, video) Variety Increasing types of data (e.g. app data, unstructured data) Velocity Quickening speed of data (e.g. smart meters, process monitoring) VERACITY Accuracy of data (e.g. surveys, polls, sales monitoring) 26 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 27

WHAT IS BIG DATA ANALYTICS? OVERVIEW OF THE BDA PROCESS Big Data Analytics (BDA) is the process of examining large data sets containing a variety of data types, i.e., Big Data: to uncover hidden patterns unknown correlations market trends customer preferences and other useful business information. Different types of Analytics M Converting Data into useful Information. Using Information to gain Insight. M H DESCRIPTIVE DIAGNOSTIC Applying Insight to make an Impact. PREDICTIVE PRESCRIPTIVE After making an Impact, Big Data is again collected to be analysed. BDA is a continuous cycle; after Impact has been made, Data again is collected & the process cycle continues. 28 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 29

HOW OPEN DATA RELATES TO OTHER TYPES OF DATA Big data All data How BDA makes a difference Open data The Potential of Big Data Analytics (BDA) Open government data BDA is no longer just an experimental tool. It has achieved real results and it is continuously expanding. 1. Non-Public Data for marketing, business analysis, national security MyData 2. Citizen Engagement Programmes not based on data Source: McKinsey Global Institute Analysis 3. Large Datasets from scientific research, social media or other non-govt sources BDA helps uncover greater insights from existing information, and; BDA has come to be recognised as a useful tool for advancing business opportunities further. 4. Public Data for state, local, federal govt. (e.g. budget data) 5. Business Reporting (e.g. ESG data), other business data (e.g. consumer complaints) 6. Large Public Goverment Datasets (e.g. weather, GPS, Census, SEC, health care) 30 Big Data Analytics Big Data Analytics 31

Benefits of BDA to the country Here are a few examples: Increased profits Creating new jobs How do I get involved? Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDeC) Faster & better decision making Increasing productivity Creating new products & services Increasing healthy lifestyles MDeC is promoting the greater adoption of Big Data Analytics locally and to ensure Open Data sets are available. Other MDeC driven initiatives are ensuring that a conducive, robust ecosystem is in place to encourage investments in BDA. MDeC is also promoting greater awareness, involvement and local development for BDA products and services. The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) was incorporated in 1996 to strategically advise the Malaysian Government on legislation, policies and standards for ICT and multimedia operations as well as to oversee the development of the Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor (now MSC Malaysia). MSC Malaysia became the platform to nurture the growth of Malaysian companies in the IT industry whilst attracting participation from global ICT companies to invest and develop cutting-edge digital and creative solutions in Malaysia. In 2011, MDeC s mandate was broadened by the Prime Minister to include driving Malaysia s transition towards a developed digital economy by 2020 through Digital Malaysia. Founded on three strategic thrusts, Digital Malaysia is a natural progression to harness the building blocks already laid by MSC Malaysia. Digital Malaysia will drive generational change through its three-phase implementation which is set to take place between 2012 to 2020, 2021 to 2030, and 2031 to 2040 respectively. The Digital Malaysia 354 (DM354) roadmap was introduced in 2013 as a structured approach to game-change Malaysia s digital landscape in Phase 1 by addressing 3 key ICT Enabling Environment Focus Areas, growing 5 ICT sub-sectors, which will eventually benefit 4 initial Digital Malaysia Communities (Digital Entrepreneur, Bottom 40 (Bottom 40% of the income pyramid), Youth & SMEs).
