Operators were overwhelmed, viewing seven traffic screens, each with different applications controlling hundreds of instruments. Soon, the number of devices that operators needed to control would exceed human capacity, hindering the authority s ability to maintain traffic flow, alleviate congestion and warn drivers of trouble ahead. The solution also analyzes traffic speed and volume data and, should defined thresholds be breached, automatically triggers alerts and provides recommendations for remedial action. The system will eventually predict near-future traffic flows, helping prevent backups and shifting the agency from a reactive to a proactive mode of traffic management. The Smarter Solution: The city deployed an intelligent traffic control solution that uses geospatial data from GPS-equipped buses to visually display the near-real-time position of each bus on a digital city map. Controllers can locate areas experiencing delays at a glance and instantly drill down to live camera feeds to identify root causes. Predictive analytics take into account speed, traffic flow and other factors to continually generate up-to-date estimates for bus arrival and transit times. Our traffic managers can make more informed decisions, based on what s happening on our bus routes at any point in time. That s a powerful tool. The Smarter Solution: The City of Cologne piloted a traffic prediction tool that uses historical and near-real-time road-sensor data and a powerful Firstof-a-Kind algorithm to project and predict traffic patterns up to 60 minutes out. Knowing when and where congestion is likely to occur gives transportation planners the ability to take preventive action, such as resetting traffic light timing or modifying speed limits on certain roads, to keep traffic moving. The tool not only helps city traffic planners predict near-future traffic patterns, but it also automatically recognizes and warns them of anomalies, such as an early start to rush-hour traffic or unanticipated congestion from an accident. Having the ability to create actionable insight from the traffic monitoring data gives us an ability to better manage congestion as well as provide citizens with more precise traffic information.
