Vekoma filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and was reformed as the Vekoma Rides Manufacturing Company. The company spent the next few years spending very little money and concentrating on their two popular ride models, the Boomerang and the Suspended Looping Coaster 3

8 Standards are the enemy of Innovation! Aren't they? Some coaster enthusiasts view Vekoma as a company that just produces clones or off the shelf coasters Boomerang, This ride is the most common roller coaster clone in the world and is currently in operation at over 20 amusement parks. These "off the shelf" coasters provide cost effective alternatives to large bespoke coasters. Its the approach to production that is standardised More effort can be focused on the site specific requirements. More time to be innovative and creative, solving new problems not the same problems 8

9 How that relates to the Water Industry The decisions we make in the design process are supported by having: The right knowledge In the right place At the right time We have standards and processes Not for roller coaster but for Water & wastewater Assets We also have the means to get new knowledge into those standards and processes. BUT There is always room for improvement! 9

13 What is BIM?..the collection, organization, and managed accessibility to data and information related to a building or buildings that may be used for a wide range of purposes that may include planning, construction, life-cycle monitoring, risk assessments, and eventually decommissioning and disposal.

21 BIG Data We are increasingly hearing about Big Data So what does it mean But more importantly how does it help us We need to find a way to convert Data into knowledge & wisdom a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools or traditional data processing applications

22 Designing for the Future Technology is becoming increasingly important for utilities to offer customers value rather than just keeping operational costs down. Big data analytics and social media are increasingly being used to improve operations and interaction with customers. In 2013 Computer Weekly reported that IBM has been awarded a contract to support Thames in big data analytics as part of AMP6 [1] analysing a range of social media channels, including blogs, online forums and Twitter, to create real-time public opinion snapshots, identifying trends and use behaviour understanding how consumers feel towards the brand.
