Short history review Forests cover 26 % (342 millions hectares) of the earth surface. 1432 mln ha of forests apply to the portion of the developed countries. The forest area of Russia complies 22 % of total area of forests in the world and 53% of the forests area of developed countries. Vast significance of Russian forests is determining great interest to the problems of forest complex in Russia and abroad.
For the first time the necessity in forestry specialists in Russia has occurred from the practical needs during the times of Peter the Great at the early XYIII century. Well-educated persons of nobles, naval officers, and persons from Western Europe, knowing the forest economy, had been invited to satisfy these needs. The first school of Russian forestry specialists was founded in 1752. The first educational institution was opened in 1803 by the Emperor Alexander II for education and teaching people in forestry science. In 1922 in Forest Institute was established the Forestry faculty, from which till 1929 independent faculties were organized: Forest-Engineering, Chemical- Technological, Mechanical Technology of Timber, Forest Marketing and Management. Forest Mechanical Faculty was opened after the second World War.
In 1930-es new Institutes were established in Arkhangelsk, Sverdlovsk, Krasnojarsk, Voronezh, Briansk, later in Moscow, Minsk, Lvov. At the same time with the development of Higher Education were established educational institutions for training the highly qualified workers according the system of vocational training schools, forestry technical secondary schools, technical secondary schools covering all directions of forestry complex activity, including more than 50 in all regions of Russia.

About 1000 class-rooms and laboratories Computer center Fundamental library from the very beginning the purpose of the library was to collect Russian and foreign forest literature as much completely as possible. Today the library is keeping about 1,5 million volumes deals with whole forest complex. The Botanical Garden have the richest collection of trees, shrubs and herbage at 60-th parallel North more then 2000 species Unique museums: Forest Entomology; Forest Zoology and Hunting; Soil and Geology

Park is also one of the old sightseeing of St. Petersburg, the monument of park and gardening art of XIX century
International Activities FTU cooperates with universities and scientific centres all over the world. The most developed partnership being with countries of Baltic Region, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany. Since 1953 foreign students have been studying at the Academy. Since that more then 3000 foreign students were graduated at the Academy. About 200 foreign students are being educated now. Department of Russian Language provides courses in Russian for foreigners (short, intensive, advanced courses)
