Thursday, April 3 Bell Work: What are 3 differences between primary and secondary succession? 1

Individual plant and animal species have adaptations that let them thrive only in certain biomes. A biome is defined by its climate (temperature & precipitation) and by the plant communities that live there. -Ecosystems located across the globe in the same biome tend to have similar plant/animal species. 2

There are 6 major land (terrestrial) biomes. -Tropical Rainforest -Grassland -Desert -Temperate forest -Taiga -Tundra 3

Which Biome is Which? 4

Tropical Rainforest Temperate Grassland Desert Temperate Forest Taiga Tundra 5

Biomes.notebook Biomes by altitude temperature and precipitation 6

Tropical Rainforests *Warm temperatures and abundant rainfall occur all year. *Vegetation includes lush thick forest. *Very little sunlight on forest floor. (Only 1% of what strikes the canopy!) *Soil is thin with very little nutrients. WHY??? *Animals that live within the thick cover of the upper-most branches of rainforest trees use loud vocalizations to defend their territory and attract mates. *Most organisms are found in the tree tops. *More than half of the earth's plants and animals are found here, mainly due to the various layers that exist. 7

Biomes.notebook 8

Grasslands -Primary plant is grass -Organisms are adapted to handle extreme changes in moisture. Two main types: tropical and temperate. 9

Tropical Grassland or Savannas *Temperatures are warm throughout the year, with definite dry and rainy seasons. *Vegetation includes tall grasses with scattered trees and shrubs. *Hoofed animals, such as gazelles and other herbivores, dominate this biome. Temperate Grassland or Prairies *This biome is dry and warm during the summer; most precipitation falls as snow during the winter. *Fast spreading fires are common *Vegetation includes short or tall grasses, depending on the amount of precipitation. *Fire resistant seeds that require fire's heat are common. *Many animals live below ground to survive the dry and windy coditions of this biome. 10

Biomes.notebook 11

Desert *This biome has a very dry climate. *There are 4 types of deserts: hot, semi arid, coastal, and cold. *Plants such as cacti, store water or have deep root systems. *Many animals are nocturnal; they limit their activities during the day. 12

Biomes.notebook 13

Temperate: All have distinguishable seasons. -Temperate Deciduous *Temperatures are hot in the summer and cold in the winter; precipitation is spaced evenly over the year. *Broadleaf forest dominates this biome, and deciduous trees lose their leaves in the winter. *Many birds migrate seasonally and most animals that stay here hibernate during the winter. -Temperate Rainforest *This biome has one long wet season and a relatively dry summer. *Evergreen conifers, which retain their leaves (needles) year-round, dominate this biome. *While some species remain active in the winter, others migrate to warmer climates or hibernate. 14

Biomes.notebook 15

Taiga also known as Boreal forest *This biome has long, cold winters (6+ months!) and short, warm humid summers. *Coniferous trees dominate this biome. *Mammals have heavy fur coats to withstand the cold winters. 16

Biomes.notebook 17

Biomes.notebook Tundra *Subzero temperatures are the norm during the long winter, and there is little precipitation. *The ground is permanently frozen. This is called permafrost. *Only mosses and other low-lying plants survive. *Animal diversity is low, those that are found here have special adaptations to survive extreme temperatures. (Ex: short ears, round bodies, thick fur) 18
