To use memory recall, media clips and a case study to understand the advantages and disadvantages of transplant surgery.

Grade C All will be able to DEFINE organ donation and transplant surgery and EXPLAIN some reasons why not everyone is an organ donor. Grade B Most will be able to EXPLAIN some of the advantages and disadvantages of transplant surgery. Grade A/A* Some will be able to ASSESS whether everyone in the UK should be a registered organ donator.

Watch the trailer for My Sisters Keeper. What issues are raised in this clip?

Transplant surgery = using body parts from one person, dead or alive, to replace the body parts in someone else.

Organ donation = Giving organs to be used in transplant surgery. What is this? How do they work?

What organs can be donated? Kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, eyes, pancreas, skin, intestines, tendons and the small bowel can all be transplanted. Tissue and bone and blood can also be used.

Using your memory recall answer the following questions. You have 3 minutes!

Grade C All will be able to DEFINE organ donation and transplant surgery and EXPLAIN some reasons why not everyone is an organ donor.

Copy the following table into your book... ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES Using the following clip, what we have done so far, and your own ideas complete the table by listing the ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of transplant surgery. http://abcnews.go.com/gma/video/familys-special-gift-organ-donation-11706949

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES It makes use if organs that would otherwise be wasted. It gives people a chance to help others. It saves lives. It can improve a persons quality of life. It comforts families who have lost a loved one. Although expensive it saves money in the long run as it cuts down on lengthy medical care. It can cause the recipient to feel guilt as someone had to die so they can live. It is an expensive procedure. There is a limit to who it can help. It can cause loved ones to feel resentment as they have lost someone but someone else has been able to live. It is not natural. Life expectancy after a transplant is lower than normal so it is not worth it.

Do you think what Taylors parents did was right? Explain your answer Do you think donors families should be able to know where the organs are going? Explain your answer

Should people be allowed to sell their own organs for money? Explain your answer. What negatives of transplant surgery are highlighted in this clip? Add these to your table!.

What point is this ad trying to make? How does it make you feel about joining the organ donor register? Why is organ donation so important? What positives of transplant are highlighted in this clip? Add these to your table!

Grade B Most will be able to EXPLAIN some of the advantages and disadvantages of organ donation.

Almost 675,000 more people pledged to help others after their death by registering their wishes on the NHS Organ Donor Register, bringing the total to 17,751,795 (March 2011). Although this figure is rising it is still less than a 3 rd of the population. Why do you think there are so few organ donators in the UK?

In Spain they have an opt out system for Organ Transplantation unless you choose to opt out your organs are automatically allowed to be donated when you die. In the UK we have an opt in system. For someone's organs to be donated they must register and make it clear that this is what they want. They can even choose which organs they would like to donate. Which system do you think is better and why?

Everyone in the UK should be made to register as an organ donor! Complete Page 73 (question 2) of your REVISION WORKBOOK Swap with a partner and mark each others work in GREEN PEN The type of question (a,b,c,d) and the marks for each question (2,4,8,6) are in brackets at the side. Please comment giving a POSITIVE and a TARGET
