Deformation by Mech l Twinning Twins also re-orient slip planes and contribute to dislocation slip indirectly Twinning is an alternate (plastic) deformation mechanism observed when the strain rate is very high or at low T (dislocation slip is suppressed) It is a strain-relief mechanism. Summary Dislocations are observed primarily in metals and alloys. Strength is increased by making dislocation motion difficult. Particular ways to increase strength are to: --decrease grain size --solid solution strengthening --precipitate strengthening --cold work Heating (annealing) can reduce dislocation density and increase grain size.
