FEBRUARY 2015 BOX OFFICE 01386 421 007 FEBRUARY 2015 7 WELCOME The 2015 award season has arrived and our February programme is packed full of Golden Globe, BAFTA and Oscar favourites. FOXCATCHER SELMA chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965 when Martin Luther King led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. A testament to the belief that one dream can change the world. Dramatic and emotionally charged with superb performances. The Imitation Game featuring Benedict Cumberbatch s triumphant portrayal of code-cracker Alan Turing also gained Keira Knightley a nomination for best supporting actress. This film was hugely appreciated by Regal audiences in January so we are bring it back in case you missed it. Our annual price changes have just been announced effective February 1st. We have ensured that our Loyalty Card Plus holders, with their 10% discount on film tickets and refreshments, continue to be well looked after and have kept increases to the minimum possible across the board, while ensuring that the cinema remains financially secure and we can continue to provide the level of service you deserve. Don t forget that we are screening England s efforts in the Six Nations rugby: admission is free of charge for our Loyalty Card Plus holders so if you don t have one, call us now. 15 per annum with an immediate 500 loyalty points, enough for a bottle of wine or two cheese platters so it pays for itself on the spot. And then you get 10% off everything for a year. National Theatre s Treasure Island screens live at The Regal on Thursday 22nd January and we have managed to fit a family screening in at half term on 18th February with reduced ticket prices. A family entertainment classic. Also for half-term we have Shaun the Sheep. When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. You can t go wrong with this it s from the makers of Wallace and Grommit, so good for grown-ups too. We look forward to seeing you all soon. Foxcatcher is a thrilling real-life drama about Olympic gold medal-winning wrestlers and brothers Mark and Dave Schultz and their relationship with millionaire heir John du Pont. Du Pont - an avid supporter and sponsor of wrestling - grows increasingly disturbed and delusional before tragedy strikes on his estate and police are engaged in a tense standoff. Regal audiences will enjoy the dramatic action, suspense and superb performances from what is described as a cinematic masterpiece. Even if you don t like wrestling you ll enjoy this film and Vanessa Redgrave puts in a rare and blissful appearance as the disapproving mother. Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is almost impossible to describe. Michael Keaton is tremendous. It looks like one single take, without cuts and is already leading the award nominations after blitzing the Venice Film Festival. It s basically a black comedy that tells the story of an actor - famous for portraying an iconic superhero - as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. This is great entertainment and superb film-making: wacky and weird. By the time you read this, you will be in no doubt of the brilliance of the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. We are showing it in February for all those who missed our January performances. Don t miss this one. The Grand Budapest Hotel has more award nominations than any other film this year. Wes Anderson s comedic tour de force has 11 citations, including best actor for Ralph Fiennes who plays fragrant hotel concierge Monsieur Gustave H. Wonderful performances, great entertainment and one of our most popular films ever, also starring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Jude Law, Owen Wilson and Harvey Keitel, it s just lots of fun. Come and see it, or see it again. Fifty Shades of Grey has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in over 50 languages worldwide since its release. To date, the Fifty Shades trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever. Of course, that doesn t necessarily mean it s a good film but it more or less means you have to see it if you want to know what everyone else is talking about. It follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and mousy college student Anastasia Steele as the plot unfolds in Mr Grey s fetish room. We thought this would make an excellent Girl s Night Out, so come along for cocktails, champagne and a nice but naughty night out on Saturday, 28th February at 9 a.m. Dress up if you must!

Chronicling the events leading up to the 1996 murder of Dave Schultz, the Olympic wrestling champion who tragically found the wrong benefactor in the Pennsylvania multimillionaire John E. du Pont. This insidiously gripping psychological drama is a model of bleak, bruising, furiously concentrated storytelling, anchored by exceptional performances from Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and an almost unrecognisable Steve Carell. There is an unforgettable scene in which Dave, for a documentary lionising du Pont, is asked to explain to the camera how the coach has inspired him, but simply cannot find the words. Even if you don t know what happens next, it is by now a story plainly bound for a painful ending. Miller directs with an impressively sure hand. He eschews music except when it adds to the mood (a rare exhibition of restraint these days), and elevates the suspense brilliantly. You might have seen two or three films as fine as this in the past 12 months, but no more than that. BIRDMAN MICHAEL KEATON, EMMA STONE, EDWARD NORTON, NAOMI WATTS (15) 119 mins from SAT 07 FEB MICHAEL KEATON PULLS OFF A STARTLING COMEBACK IN THIS BLISTERING SHOWBIZ SATIRE VARIETY You ll believe a man can fly. Or you ll believe that believing you can fly and flying are sort of the same thing. Either way, Alejandro González Iñárritu achieves take off in a big way with his crazy, freaky-deaky showbiz comedy Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). At certain moments, watching it feels like inhaling laughing gas mixed with helium. It s shot in one single take, without cuts and depicts the escalating anxiety attack being suffered by a failing movie star called Riggan Thomson, played by Michael Keaton. A blisteringly hot-blooded, defiantly anti-formulaic look at a has been movie star s attempts to resuscitate his career by mounting a vanity project on Broadway. In a year overloaded with self-aware showbiz satires, Alejandro G. Inarritu s fifth and best feature provides the delirious coup de grace, a triumph on every creative level, from casting to execution, that will electrify the industry, captivate art house and megaplex crowds alike, send awards pundits into orbit and give fresh wings to Keaton s career.

FEBRUARY 2015 BOX OFFICE 01386 421 007 FEBRUARY 2015 13 NOMINATED FOR 5 OSCARS & 5 BAFTAS GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER WHIPLASH MILES TELLER, J.K. SIMMONS, MELISSA BENOIST (15) 106 mins from SUN 23 FEB AN EXTRAORDINARY FILM DAILY NEWS J.K. Simmons lands the role of his career as a conservatory conductor who drums the fear of failure into his students. A jazz band leader at a top flight New York conservatoire. Miles Teller is Andrew, a gifted drummer dragged into Fletcher s inner circle/boxing ring. Fletcher believes in beating the talent out of his pupils. He slaps them in time to the beat! Still Andrew pounds the skins, desperate to win the monster s approval. The worse two words ever invented are good job, says Fletcher. Meanwhile, as much fun as Fletcher is to watch, his behaviour is nothing shy of monstrous, and one can sense the clash brewing between the conductor and his new favourite student far in advance. It s rare to see a film about music that professes its love for the music and its characters equally. Whiplash shows a director besotted with the precision of jazz and the raw ecstasy of a talent unleashed. The two sides play together, while Chazelle hammers out a new beat for the genre to move to. A truly extraordinary and different film. TRASH MARTIN SHEEN, ROONEY MARA, WAGNER MOURA (15) 114 mins from FRI 06 FEB STEPHEN DALDRY S BRAZILIAN ANSWER TO SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE THE GUARDIAN Stunning performances from a trio of young Brazilian actors save Daldry s compelling tale of corruption from a rubbish ending. The films charismatic slum dwelling kids stumble upon evidence certain to bring down a corrupt politico. Cleanly scripted in pure Hollywood fashion by Richard Curtis (with Felipe Braga translating it into Portuguese), Stephen Daldry s Trash won t be confused for a real Brazilian production, its storyline, staging and inevitably positive spin unmistakably mark it an offshore production. With Trash, Daldry does what he s been doing since his breakthrough, Billy Elliot; he delivers a well-crafted film that aims high. It works in part thanks to the infectious energy and sheer pleasure in comradeship exuded by the three young teen boys, a truly uplifting tale. KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE COLIN FIRTH, MICHAEL CAINE, SAMUEL L JACKSON (15) 129 mins from FRI 13 FEB DAPPER LAUGHS IN THRILLINGLY ADOLESCENT 007 PASTICHE THE GUARDIAN Colin Firth s well-turned-out secret agent is both a homage and mickey-take of James Bond in Matthew Vaughn s second adaptation of the deliriously irreverent Mark Millar material. Colin Firth is both ludicrously British and modern-day Hollywood in Kingsman: The Secret Service, the wildly enjoyable new film from Matthew Vaughn. His Harry Hart muses on the importance of a bespoke suit one moment and dispatches a band of villains with precise alacrity and nifty gadgets the next. This movie stands in reverence of the English upper classes and the seeming ease with which they gracefully solve problems, yet is so wonderfully absurd that, if one were ever to speak so coarsely, one would say they were taking the piss. Kingsman quite neatly has its scone and eats it, too.

FEBRUARY 2015 BOX OFFICE 01386 421 007 FEBRUARY 2015 15 THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING EDDIE REDMAYNE FELICITY JONES (12A) 123 mins from MON 02 FEB EDDIE REDMAYNE & FELICITY JONES ARE EXTRAORDINARY VANITY FAIR The Regal is under invasion from a British scientist. Specifically, an Oxbridge-educated scientist from the middle of the last century who made monumental breakthroughs despite enormous personal obstacles. We first see Hawking as a grinning postgraduate in early 1960 s Cambridge, whizzing on his boneshaker over the cobbles with a pal to a party. It s here he meets Jane (Felicity Jones), a foreign languages undergrad who shares his intellectual curiosity (and, as it happens, his movie star pout). Then, aged 21, after a fall, comes Hawking s terrible diagnosis: motor neurone disease, meaning his muscles will progressively waste and he most likely has only a couple of years to live. Hawking asks if his brain will still function. Oh yes, replies the doctor except no one will know what you re thinking. His physical decline runs in parallel to Hawking s personal and professional successes: bestsellers and academic acclaim. It s a film to leave you reeling but cheered, too. It s about battling love, as well as illness. A universal story, extracted from a unique one. NOMINATED FOR 6 OSCARS & 2 BAFTAS NOMINATED FOR 5 OSCARS & 10 BAFTAS WINNER OF 2 GOLDEN GLOBES AMERICAN SNIPER BRADLEY COOPER, SIENA MILLER, DIRECTED BY CLINT EASTWOOD (15) 135 mins from SUN 01 FEB THE BEST FILM OF THE YEAR NEW YORK POST A superb performance by Bradley Cooper anchors Clint Eastwood s harrowing and thoughtful dramatization of the life of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. A skilful, straightforward combat picture gradually develops into something more complex and ruminative in Clint Eastwood s American Sniper, an account of the Iraq War as observed through the rifle sights of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, whose four tours of duty cemented his standing as the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history. Hard-wiring the viewer into Kyle s battle-scarred psyche thanks to an excellent performance from a bulked-up Bradley Cooper, this harrowing and intimate character study offers fairly blunt insights into the physical and psychological toll exacted on the front lines. American Sniper hinges on Cooper s restrained yet deeply expressive lead performance, allowing many of the drama s unspoken implications to be read plainly in the actor s increasingly war-ravaged face. IT S BACK! THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL JUDI DENCH, MAGGIE SMITH, BILL NIGHY, RICHARD GERE, DEV PATEL (PG) 122 mins from FRI 06 MARCH OPEN FOR BUSINESS AGAIN! THE REGAL S MOST SUCCESSFUL FILM OF ALL TIME! THE REGAL John Madden s sequel to the surprise 2012 box-office smash The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is finally here. The Shakespeare in Love director s follow up, titled The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, sees ambitious hotel owner-manager Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) embark on a brand new venture for a second business. New arrival Guy (Richard Gere), joins Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton and Maggie Smith all back for the new instalment. The first Best Exotic Marigold Hotel took 81m worldwide two years ago against a budget of just $10m, a hugely impressive take for an indie comedy. Its success was hailed by some as evidence of a gap in the market for films targeting an older demographic. The original introduced audiences to a group of British pensioners living in the eponymous retirement home in India owned by Dev Patel s Sonny; this next instalment sees the hotel s balance disrupted by the arrival of new American resident Guy (Gere), and it isn t long until the core female residents begin lusting over their new arrival - most notably returnee Celia Imrie ( Have mercy on my ovaries, she quips upon spotting Guy for the first time).

FEBRUARY 2015 BOX OFFICE 01386 421 007 FEBRUARY 2015 17 2 OSCAR NOMINATIONS GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER SELMA DAVID OYELOWO, CARMEN EJOGO, COMMON, OPRAH WINFREY, CUBA GOODING JR (12A) 128 mins from FRI 20 FEB ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FILMS OF THE YEAR FORBES SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. David Oyelowo is electrifying as Martin Luther King in Ava DuVernay s furious, gutsy and all too timely account of black America s struggle for Civil Rights. The film is as politically astute as it is psychologically, giving us a human King whose indomitable public face belies currents of weariness and self-doubt. The movie has the electric feel of events unfolding in the moment, even if we already know how everything turned out. That feeling extends to King s impassioned How Long, Not Long speech, delivered on the Montgomery capitol steps, a sequence DuVernay movingly stages through an assembly of re-enactments and actual newsreel footage. It s a powerful moment by any measure, but one that takes on uncanny resonances as King talks about the vicious lie of racial superiority passed down from one generation to the next, words that seem all too prescient in the age of post-katrina Louisiana, riot-torn Ferguson, and the various campaigns to delegitimize the presidency of Barack Obama.

FEBRUARY 2015 BOX OFFICE 01386 421 007 FEBRUARY 2015 19 SAT 28 FEBRUARY GIRLS NIGHT 21.00 50 SHADES OF GREY JAMIE DORNAN, DAKOTA JOHNSON (18) 117 mins from FRI 27 FEB Fifty Shades of Grey is the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the bestselling book that has become a global phenomenon. Since its release, the Fifty Shades trilogy has been translated into 51 languages worldwide and sold more than 100 million copies in e-book and print making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever. Stepping into the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, who have become iconic to millions of readers, are Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. The first full trailer for the S&M romance is out, and rather than filth, it offers a lot of shots of Jamie Dornan gazing out of an office. For Fifty Shades of Grey fans, this trailer is a big deal. It answers questions like Will it be as dirty as the book? Will Jamie Dornan be a better Christian Grey than Charlie Humman? and How many times will Dakota Johnson say Holy crap out loud before she becomes genuinely unbearable? All we are sure of at The Regal is that the trailer has received more than 36 million views in less than a week. That must mean something?
