College of Charleston Modifying your Internet Explorer Security Settings Making Internet Explorer 11 work properly with Cognos Mary L. Person 9/28/2015

Introduction Cognos was created to work with Internet Explorer. However, as Microsoft has improved its security with each release, Cognos features are affected. In order to ensure Cognos maintains proper functionality, there are some simple steps to follow. After Microsoft or the College pushes out updates to Internet Explorer, it is possible that these settings will need to be modified again. Steps for updating Internet Explorer Settings There are several places in Internet Options that need to be modified to modify the default settings put in place by Microsoft to accommodate reporting using Cognos within Internet Explorer. Please follow the below steps closely to ensure your browser settings are appropriately set. 1. Log in to Cognos using Internet Explorer (https://reporting.battery.cofc.edu) 2. Click on Tools from the browser menu choices (looks like a gear) 3. Click on Internet Options 4. Click on the Security Tab 5. Click on the Trusted Sites green checkmark 6. Click on the word Sites 7. You should see the Add this website to the zone: with the Cognos link listed, click on Add or type https://reporting.battery.cofc.edu 8. Click Close 9. Just above the Custom level button is a checkbox to Enable Protected Mode. Please check this box. 10. Click on Custom Level button just below the trusted sites 11. In the top.net Framework section, make sure the XPS filter is set for Enable 12. Scroll down to Downloads section 13. Make sure the File Download option is Enabled 14. Scroll down under the Miscellaneous section Page 1 of 4

15. Make sure Allow Websites to open windows without address or status bars is set on Enabled 16. Make sure the Display Mixed Content is Enabled 17. Make sure Launching applications and unsafe files is set to Prompt 18. Make sure the Use Pop-up Blocker is set to Disable 19. Scroll down to the Scripting section 20. Make sure Allow Programmatic clipboard access is set to Enabled (If you are an author, this will hide the pop up that opens every time you open a Studio and it asks you if you want to allow clipboard access.) 21. Make sure the XSS filter is disabled 22. Choose OK to apply 23. Follow the same steps for the Internet section same level as the green check for Trusted sites. 24. Click on the Privacy tab 25. About ¾ of the way down the tab, there is a Pop-Up Blocker checkbox; make sure it is unchecked. 26. Click Apply to enforce your changes from both tabs immediately 27. From the IE browser click Tools then Compatibility View Settings. You must have the Menu Bar toolbar displayed for this menu to show up. To get the Menu Bar, right click on the right side of the Favorites Bar items and select Menu Bar. 28. Under the Add this website: box enter cofc.edu 29. Click Add 30. Click Close 31. This will add the website to the list of site to use "Compatibility View". 32. Click on the Connections tab. 33. At the bottom of that tab, click on the LAN settings button. Page 2 of 4

34. Make sure Automatically detect settings is selected. 35. Click OK. 36. Click OK again. 37. From the same Tools menu, select Enterprise Mode. You may need to close your browser and open it back up. You may also need to clear the cache. To clear the cache, on the Internet Options General tab in the Browsing History section, click the Delete button. Page 3 of 4

Notes about downloading a file into another format When you are exporting a file to Excel, your View Downloads window will appear a bit different from the older versions of Internet Explorer. Just like in the older versions of IE and when you open an attachment from Outlook, you will have the option to Open or Save the file you have downloaded. Internet Explorer will give the file a name comprised of the report name and a random alpha-numeric code and store a temporary copy in the default location, which is in the Downloads folder of your Favorites. If this window does not pop up automatically, chances are you have missed a step from above. Check your settings from steps 12, 16, and 23. You can also choose to click Ctrl + j keys. You may also see a yellow bar at the bottom of the screen. Click Open or Save, as desired. If one of these window does not pop up automatically, chances are you have missed a step from above. Check your settings from steps 12, 16, 23, 37. You can also choose to click Ctrl + j keys. Page 4 of 4
