Roger Bailey Traveling Fellowship Proposal Brent Lamoreaux England and France Pilgrimage In medieval Europe, pilgrims would journey throughout the land, primarily to Compostela, Spain, to seek cure from sin or illness, to focus on self reflection, and to renew the spirit by visiting sacred places that held significant moral and spiritual value including shrines and road churches along the way. My proposed journey will take me on a pilgrimage through some of the spiritual routes of the past, in order to gain my own understanding and respect of these sacred and historic places including Canterbury, England and Tours, France. I believe that the true purpose of the fellowship is to give an opportunity to explore countries and cultures in a more in-depth perspective than one might have if just on vacation. I have never had an intense desire to visit France, even though it is where my family roots originate. However, while preparing this proposal, I have found great beauty in the architecture and culture of both France and England, which has ignited an intense desire to experience my own journey to examine and learn from these countries and their rich histories. To sit and sketch at some of these locations would be extremely fulfilling, and will not only benefit me in my personal life, but in my profession as well. I was recently requested at work to help sketch ideas for window ornamentation for a religious temple, as well as historic, brownstone housing. As I began to sketch, I soon realized that I had very little to go on based on my limited experiences. My only references came from books or online sources. This trip would allow me to study different styles and personally learn from the great architects and artists of the past. My journey would be ideally much like that of Christopher Wren's, who in the 17th century, traveled to France to receive inspiration and ideas to help rebuild a crippled London after fire destroyed much of the city. Influences from his journey can be seen in the gothic style elements on the many churches and cathedrals throughout London, including most notably St. Paul's. The influences that Wren brought with him, were also carried across the ocean to the United States. I believe that we can truly learn from other architects, artists, and cultures to help influence our own design. Many of the past recipients of the Roger Bailey fellowship have gone on to become principals and partners in many prestigious architectural firms, I hope that this experience will provide the necessary foundation and knowledge that I will need to become a great designer and architect myself. Sketching is my true passion. Once I sketch something, it is engrained in my memory and creative process. Sketching these visual monuments will serve as my own pilgrimage to better myself and the design projects that I am involved in.
