MSSQL Quick Start Guide SQL databases provide many benefits to the web designer, allowing you to dynamically update your web pages, collect and maintain customer data and allowing customers to contribute to your website with content of their own. In addition many software applications, such as blogs, forums and content management systems require a database to store their information. SQL stands for Structured Query Language, which is a standard interactive programming language used for many popular databases. Before you Start Before you can start to use your database, you will need to make a note of the following information. Database host IP address. Name of the database. The username you will connect with. The password for the user. Microsoft has developed a number of free tools to help you manage and administer your database. Some of the tasks described within this guide require the installation of these tools on your local machine. For full control over your database, we recommend downloading these products. Installing SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 is designed to help you manage your database easily and quickly. Through the Graphical User Interface (GUI) you are able to create tables, schema, object and users. You can also set permissions and run scripts directly on your database. Page 1 of 9

Requirements for Installing SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 Before you can install SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008, there a few prerequisites that need to be met. The software is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows XP with Service pack 2 Windows Vista Windows Server 2003 with Service pack 2 Windows Server 2008. In addition to the above operating systems, the following components are required before SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 can be installed. Quick tip: It is recommended that you install these components in the order they are listed below. 32 bit operating systems should install the x86 versions of these components. Once your computer meets the minimum requirements you will be able to install SQL Server Management Express 2008. This is available at: http://www.microsoft.com/express/sql/download. There are three versions of SQL Server 2008 Express available to download. SQL Server 2008 Express (Runtime only): Basic database engine, allowing you to create, store, update and retrieve your data. SQL Server 2008 Express with tools: Has all the features listed above, but also comes with SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008. SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services: This version comes complete with SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 as above, but with the addition of a powerful high speed engine for searching text, and an integrated report creation and design environment. To install SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 you should download either SQL Server Express with tools, or SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services. Installing SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 Once you have decided which version of Studio Express you require, visit the relevant Microsoft web page and click Download. A popup box will appear asking you if you want to run the installation, or save the file to your computer. Click Run. Step 1 The Installation centre will appear. In the left hand menu click Installation, and then click New SQL Server stand-alone installation at the top of the screen. Page 3 of 9
Step 2 The installation tool will now check that your computer meets the hardware and software requirements and is capable of running Studio Express. If any of these checks fail, fix the error and click Re-run. Once the checks have been passed, click OK to continue. Quick tip: The installation process may pause at this point to install a hotfix on your machine. Once this has been installed the installation wizard will continue as normal. Step 3 Click Next. Step 4 Read the End User License agreement. If you are happy with this, tick the box marked I accept the license terms, and then click Next. Page 4 of 9
Step 5 The next step is to Install and setup the support files. Click Install to start this installation. Step 6 Another set of checks will be run on your computer. These will check for possible problems that may occur during the installation of Studio Express. If any of these checks fail fix, the error and click Re-run. Once the checks have been passed, click OK to continue. Page 5 of 9
Step 7 The feature selection screen will appear. To install SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008, tick the box marked Management Tools - Basic. Step 8 Once selected, click Next. Step 9 The installation wizard will now check that there is room on your computer to install Studio Express. Once these checks are complete click Next. Page 6 of 9
Step 10 The error and user reporting page will appear. Select which information (if any) you would like to forward to Microsoft, and then click Next. Step 11 A final set of checks is made to ensure that the wizard will be able to install the specific features you requested during step 7. If any of these checks fail fix the error and click Re-run. Once the checks have been passed click OK to continue. Step 12 A list of the features to be installed will appear. Ensure that Management tools - basic is listed and click Install. Step 13 The installation wizard will now install the features you have requested. Once done click Next to see the confirmation screen and Close to end the wizard. SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 is now installed on your computer. You can now use this software to connect to your database. Page 7 of 9
Connecting to Your Database with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 Step 1 Open the SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 software. Step 2 You will be asked for your database connection details, enter the following: Server Type: Select Database Engine from the drop down list. Server Name: Enter the IP address of your database. Authentication: Select SQL Server Authentication. Login: Enter your database username. Password: Enter the password for your database. Remember password: If you tick this then the software will remember your password so you won t have to enter it next time. Do not check this box if anyone else has access to your computer. When you have entered these details, click the Connect button to log in to the database. Step 3 Find your database in the list titled Object Explorer and click on it. Page 8 of 9
Note: Because your database is hosted on a dedicated database server, you will see the names of other user s databases in the list. You will not be able to view or modify any database other than your own, and other users won t have any access to your database and the data held within it. Step 4 You can now modify your database using the software. To create a new table, double click on the Tables folder in the main list on the right hand side, right click with the mouse, and select New Table from the menu that pops up.
