1 VMWare Workstation 11 Installation MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2008 R2 STANDARD ENTERPRISE ED.

2 Starting Vmware Workstation Go to the start menu and start the VMware Workstation program. *If you are using windows version 8 or later you can use the search feature to locate VMware *Note: The following instructions are written starting at the point after the download and/or installation of VMware Workstation (or MS Virtual PC). If you have any questions regarding the download or installation see your instructor.

3 Creating a new virtual machine. Select Create New Virtual Machine on the Home page.

4 Selecting the Configuration Method For this installation, choose the Custom (advanced) configuration. Click Next.

5 Choose Virtual Machine Hardware Compatibility Select the version of VMware that you would like to use. (choose the latest version) 11.0 Then select Next.

6 Choosing Install Method In the Guest Operating System Installation window, select the I will install the operating system later radial button. Then click Next

7 Select the Guest OS VMware will likely detect the OS automatically. If not, choose from the list the most appropriate operation system. Remember, we are installing Windows Server 2008 R2 and it is the x64 bit version. *note this will require you to have a machine (laptop/desktop) powerful and up to date enough to support this. At least 4GB RAM is ideal.

8 Naming the Virtual Machine In this step you need to give your virtual machine a descriptive name and select a location for it. It s good practice to include the OS version in the name and create a folder with the same name just for that particular virtual machine. Click Next.

9 Select your boot device This step is simply choosing the boot up method for the operating system (windows server 2008 r2) Since EFI is a very new technology, in this class we will always choose the BIOS boot device Then select Next

10 Processor Configuration This step is where you configure the virtual setup of your processors (CPUs). For this class, it is best practice to choose 1 for number of processors so that compatibility will not be an issue in the future. Then, select 2 cores due to the fact that we are running a 64 bit operating system. Click Next

11 Memory for the Virtual Machine (in terms of RAM) For best practice, and the intent of this course we will just stick with the recommended memory which is 2048 MB = 2GB. This should also be the default setting.

12 Network Type Bridged networking will allow our virtual machine to actually connect with the external physical Ethernet network. Which then allows us to access internet services via our virtual client! Select Bridged networking then click Next

13 I/O (input/output) Controllers This is for more technical purposes not to be used in this course, so we can select the recommended setting. Click Next

14 Select desired disk type Similar to the previous step, we will not need to create SATA or IDE drives. So we can go ahead and select the recommended type (SCSI) Click Next

15 Select Disk We will be selecting create new virtual disk at this step because we have not pre configured anything else What this step does is actually create your virtual machine and save it as a file on your PC or thumb drive in a format that is only recognized by VMware. Select Next

16 How big should the VM be? Although the size of your VM can be proportional to the size of the hard drive that it is on, we will make ours 40 GB. And this does not mean that is how large it will be, but simply how large it could get to. So this wont actually take up 40GB of space. Also make sure we are storing this as a single file Click Next.

17 Select Destination of Virtual Workstation This step is dependent upon where you would like you workstation to be stored and what it is named. It is best to keep the name as default The best place to save this file is to create a folder for all your workstations in your my documents folder, and then store it in the folder you created. However the choice is ultimately up to you This is where the file is stored if you just stick with the default

18 Creating the VM Check the settings to make sure they are correct and then click Finish.

19 Selecting the boot image Find the iso image for the installation (right click on the CDROM icon, select settings) and Click OK

20 Reset the VM Click on the Reset This Virtual Machine button. *The machine will automatically boot to the ISO image.

21 Language, Time, Keyboard Keep the defaults. Click Next.

22 Start the Install Click Install now

23 Select the OS Version For this installation we are going with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (Full Installation)

24 License Terms Check I accept the license terms. Click Next

25 Type of Installation We are going to do a Custom (advanced) install for this VM.

26 Where to Install Select Disk 0 (the disk you created for the VM) Click Next

27 Installing Windows It will take several minutes to complete the installation. Note* -The machine used in the tutorial took approximately 5 minutes to complete this step

28 Login Enter a password for the Administrator account and login as Administrator.

29 VMware Tools VMware Tools installation should start automatically after you login.

30 Activating Windows Click Start, Then hover your mouse over Computer and Right Click. Then select properties to bring up the screen on the right Click on the Activate Windows now link at the bottom of the window.

31 Software Key Enter the key that came with your software. Student keys are most often associated with your dream spark account you have been issued by default. Contact your instructor to access your dream spark account. Click Next

32 Activating Windows It will take a few minutes for the process to complete.

33 Updates After logging in and setting up a network connection the first thing to do would be check for updates.

34 Updates Install the Windows Update Software.

35 You may need to configure your updates before they can be installed and applied. Configuring Updates The picture to the right shows the ideal update settings Click OK

36 Updates If you don t select all updates, it s a good idea to at least select Important updates. You may or may not see this screen. Some of the pictures seen in the tutorial were taken on an old version of VM ware running Windows Vista

37 This is the screen you should see after configuring update settings Finishing Update Process Select install now in order to finish the process This may take a while depending on network connectivity and hardware.

38 Installation Complete Your new Microsoft Windows Server 2008 VM should be ready to go now.

39 Optional Installs Adobe Acrobat Reader Adobe Acrobat Microsoft Word Viewer Microsoft Word Viewer
