YARDWASTE Help create valuable compost and protect local waterways by placing leaves in your compost bin, instead of blowing or raking them into the street or storm drain. Yardwaste consists of grass clippings, leaves, brush, garden prunings, flowers, wreaths, pumpkins & other vegetables/ fruit from your yard, manure & animal bedding and branches 6 diameter or smaller. Please no rocks, dirt, cat or dog waste or painted wood. TRASH IMPORTANT RECYCLING 2 feet 2 feet Container colors may vary in your area. YARDWASTE All items must be placed in the cart. When your cart is full, set it out by 6am* on your service day, at least 2 feet away from other carts and 4-6 feet from other objects, lid opening facing the curb. *Up-valley residents and businesses should set out trash, recyclables and greenwaste the night before collection day. NO HAZARDOUS WASTE such as automotive fluids, pesticides and fertilizers, paint products, cleaners, batteries, etc. For safe and legal disposal of hazardous waste, see page 14. Electronics, Bulky Items and Large Appliances: Curbside pickup for these items available for a fee or free in some areas. Call your service provider for details. BUSINESS & SCHOOL RECYCLING FREE Waste Assessments Can you decrease the garbage bill at your school, business, or apartment building? Are you paying to dispose of materials that could be recycled? Interior Bins Do you need a better way to collect and transfer recyclables from your office, classroom, or apartment to the bins outside? The City and County of Napa will provide free interior recycling containers to businesses, schools, and multi-family dwellings committed to recycling (while supplies last). Mandatory Commercial Recycling As part of California s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reach a 75% recycling rate by 2020, recycling is now mandatory for all large businesses and apartment complees. BUSINESS & SCHOOL RECYCLING Tours & Presentations What happens to your recyclables and yardwaste after you put them in your curbside carts? We invite your organization, business, or school to take a tour and see our recycling and composting facility firsthand. We are also available for presentations about the economic and environmental benefits of recycling we ll modify our presentation to make it age appropriate. The Environmental Education Coalition of Napa County connects teachers with local agencies and nonprofits that provide local environmental education opportunities including field trips, guest speakers, and service projects. Bay Area Green Business Program $500 stipend now available to City of Napa businesses that complete program Napa County is part of the Bay Area Green Business Program. Over 95 businesses and wineries in Napa County have been certified as Green Businesses. Green Businesses benefit from free technical assistance and public promotions, and are seen as leaders in sustainable business. To become a certified Green Business, your business must be in compliance with all environmental regulations and must implement a minimum number of measures in four areas: energy efficiency, water conservation, pollution prevention and solid waste reduction/recycling. Area cities are working together with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) to offer a combined waterenergy rebate of $100 on certain high-efficiency models. REFRIGERATORS, FREEZERS & ROOM AIR CONDITIONERS Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) customers may qualify for a rebate by recycling old refrigerators, freezers and room air conditioners. Refrigerators or freezers must be at least 10-30 cubic feet each, empty and working. There is a limit of two units per household per year. The pick-up service is free. TOILETS City of Napa water customers and Napa Sanitation District sewer customers can take advantage of generous financial incentives to replace pre-1992 water-wasting toilets (3.5 or more gallons per flush) with today s high-efficiency toilets, some of which use as little as 1 gallon per flush. Commercial customers may also obtain rebates for high-efficiency urinals and other water-saving equipment. Recycling centers are allowed to pay by weight as a matter of business efficiency, however California law allows the option of being paid based on count for up to 50 containers of each material type. Non-CRV glass, metal and plastic beverage containers are accepted for recycling at most drop-off recycling locations. GLASS PLASTIC J $ J $ J $ Who owns your recyclables? PAPER & CARDBOARD Recyclable materials at your workplace or home belong to you. You may choose to take your cans and bottles to a recycling buyback center or put your recyclables in the recycling equipment provided by your service provider for regularly scheduled pickup. Once those materials are in the recycling cart or bin, only you or your service provider have the right to remove them. The recyclables have value, and the revenue your service provider receives from processing recyclables is taken into consideration when garbage collection rates are set.
RECYCLING AT SPECIAL EVENTS Look for recycling containers at fairs, concerts or other public events! Want to recycle at YOUR event? Resources are available to help you succeed. During the planning process, call NRWS at 707-255-5200 (south county) or 707-253-4094 for up-valley. They will help you select the right recycling and trash containers for your needs and provide guidelines for successful event recycling. State and County policies require recycling at large events. Plus, recycling will save you money because there is no charge for recycling at large events (south county and north county free services vary) while there is always a charge for trash collection. PLAN FOR RECYCLING Learn more: Include a plan for recycling as you organize your event. Recycling and trash containers should always be paired together. Proper placement and signage for all containers is key. Work with cleanup staff to monitor containers throughout the event. If you are not able to recruit volunteers for end-of-event cleanup, paying for assistance during this critical time is a worthwhile investment. AUTOMOTIVE USED MOTOR OIL & FILTER RECYCLING FREE DROP-OFF Items are accepted only during business hours and 5 gallons or less of oil preferred at a time. Leaving oil or any other substance after business hours is illegal, punishable by imprisonment or a fine up to $10,000.
