DRY ICE EDUCATION: WHAT IS DRY ICE CLEANING? Dry ice cleaning or dry ice blasting as it is commonly known, is a cost-effective alternative for industries to maintain production quality and efficiency through an environmentally, employee, and equipment friendly cleaning method. Dry ice cleaning can take the place of most sand blasting, plastic bead blasting, water blasting, or soda blasting applications, but instead of using hard abrasive media to grind on a surface, dry ice blasting uses compressed air to accelerate frozen CO2 pellets to a high velocity to remove debris off from and clean a surface. Dry ice cleaning has many desirable benefits over other blasting media applications such as: * it is a non-abrasive, nonflammable and nonconductive cleaning method * it can be used to remove production residue, release agents, contaminants, paints, oils, and biofilms * it is environmentally responsible and contains no secondary contaminants such as solvents or grit media * it can be used for many types of cleaning from gentle cleaning of paper and cardboard to aggressive blasting of metal surfaces * it allows for many items to be cleaned in place without the need for disassembly * it can be used without damaging electrical or mechanical parts or creating fire hazards * it can be used for many general cleaning applications

DRY ICE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS: DRY ICE BLASTING IS A CLEAN AND SAFE ALTERNATIVE. Whether you need a dry clean, are trying to reduce the amount of water or chemicals used or are trying to enhance sanitation or crosscontamination prevention programs, cleaning with dry ice provides the environmentally sustainable answer. Dry ice has been approved by the EPA, FDA and USDA as an acceptable material to be used in cleaning methods and dry ice blasting does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere. Dry ice cleaning does not generate secondary waste and is safe and non-toxic as the pellets dissipate upon impact of the surface. Dry ice blasting reduces or eliminates employee exposure to dangerous solvents and toxic chemicals commonly used in industrial cleaning and also reduces the amount of toxic waste to be disposed of. Dry ice cleaning is an approved, safe, and effective method in cleaning food processing equipment and also inhibits mold and bacteria growth. It is important to know that dry ice is obtained as a byproduct of other industrial processes such as reclaimed CO2. It does not add CO2 to the atmosphere and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect.

DRY ICE CLEANING APPLICATIONS: WHAT TYPES OF APPLICATIONS CAN DRY ICE CLEANING BE USED? Dry ice cleaning can be used in many applications to clean dirt, soot, grease and oil build up on process equipment. Effective cleaning extends the life of equipment, can reduce energy costs, and can prevent costly down-time. Dry ice cleaning can clean in place without disassembly or cool down and is non-abrasive, non-conductive, non-corrosive and does not use water. It is also non-toxic and is safe to use around employees. Some of the proven applications for dry ice blasting include: * Production equipment * Ceilings and walls * Equipment degreasing * Surface cleaning before painting * Electric motors * Electrical boxes * Control panels * Conveyors * Cooling fans * Commercial dryers * Robotics * Sanding belts * Pumps * Hydraulic parts * Pipes, hoses, & fittings * Die cast tooling * Resin removal * Refractory coatings

DRY ICE CLEANING COMPARISONS: HOW DOES DRY ICE CLEANING COMPARE TO OTHER TRADITIONAL CLEANING METHODS? If you are experiencing prolonged downtime, high costs for secondary waste disposal or costly wear and tear on equipment it may be time to evaluate your cleaning process and measure it against the dry ice blasting process. Dry ice blasting is an environmentally, employee, and equipment-friendly alternative to most conventional surface preparation and cleaning methods. Compare your current cleaning process to the dry ice blast cleaning process and add value to your business through improved productivity, reduced waste and lower costs. Cleaning Process Comparison: * Dry ice cleaning has no secondary waste, is not electrically conductive, is not abrasive, is not toxic and has excellent effectiveness. * Sand blasting generates secondary waste, is not electrically conductive, is very abrasive, can be toxic, and has good effectiveness. * Water blasting generates secondary waste, is electrically conductive, is not abrasive, can become toxic, and has moderate effectiveness. * Solvent / chemical cleaning generates secondary waste, can be abrasive to the surface, is toxic, and has limited effectiveness. Whether you want a superior clean, an environmentally safe alternative or a less abrasive method of cleaning, dry ice cleaning may be the answer to your industrial cleaning projects.

Dry ice cleaning example: Dryer drum prior to ice cleaning. Plugged holes in drum were increasing the dry time as the heat was not able to circulate through the drum as needed. Drums were 12% to 25% blocked.

Dry ice cleaning example: Dryer drum after dry ice cleaning. We have experienced about an 8% - 10% decrease in weekly gas usage since the cleaning by your company. For us that represents about a $25,000 annual savings. Bob Pfeifer CLLM General Manager North Grand River Co-Operative, Inc. Sodexo Laundry Division
