Coffee Shop Rewards Programs Consumer Insights Key Insights 1. Coffee Shop Rewards Members Loyal Shoppers While only 16% of consumers belong to rewards programs for coffee shops, they make 84% of their coffee shop visits to establishments where they are a member. 2. Free Merchandise or Upgrades Most Preferred Reward for Coffee Shop Members Free merchandise or upgrades was rated by members of coffee shop rewards programs as the most preferred reward. 61% of members indicated they are currently receiving this reward. 3. Choice of Coffee Shop Influenced by Program Membership 24% of coffee shop members indicated their membership was Very influential in their choice of a coffee shop. An additional 34% indicated the membership was Somewhat influential. 4. Coffee Shop Rewards Members Slightly Older Compared to Other Retail Programs 29% of coffee shop rewards members are aged 45-54 compared to 22% of all retail program members who fall in that age category. 5. Nearly Half of Coffee Shop Rewards Programs Still Use Punch Cards 45% of consumers who are members of coffee shop rewards programs indicated that the program uses punch cards to identify them as a member. About this study First Data Competitive Intelligence conducted the Consumer Loyalty Study with over 1,000 U.S. consumers in July 2008. The study focuses on rewards programs with Financial Institutions (FIs), the travel sector and the retail sector. Key Insight #1: Coffee Shop Rewards Members Loyal Shoppers While only 16% of consumers belong to rewards programs for coffee shops, they make 84% of their coffee shop visits to establishments where they are a member. Consumers who are members of coffee shop rewards programs belong to 1.3 programs on average. Key Insight #2: Free Merchandise or Upgrades Most Preferred Reward for Coffee Shop Members In general, the rewards that coffee shop members receive match somewhat with their preferences. Free merchandise or upgrades is the top preferred reward and is received by 61% of members. The second most preferred, Immediate rewards/discounts at the point of sale, however, is received by only 27% of members. While 38% of members indicate they receive Coupons for discounts on specific Items, that reward is rated fourth in terms of preference. Key Insight #3: Choice of Coffee Shop Influenced by Program Memberships 24% of coffee shop members indicated their membership was Very influential in their choice of a coffee shop. An additional 34% indicated the membership was Somewhat influential. This value is high compared to other retail categories (except gas stations). 4% of fast food rewards members, for example, indicated their choice of fast food restaurants is Very influenced by their membership. Key Insight #4: Coffee Shop Rewards Members Slightly Older Compared to Other Retail Programs 29% of coffee shop rewards members are aged 45-54 compared to 22% of all retail program members who fall in that age category. Coffee shop members are also slightly more educated with 28% of members having post-graduate degrees compared to 22% of all retail program members. Key Insight #5: Nearly Half of Coffee Shop Rewards Programs Still Use Punch Cards 45% of consumers who are members of coffee shop rewards programs indicated that the program uses punch cards to identify them as a member. Only 33% of coffee shop programs use magnetic strip or barcode technology to identify their members. This indicates tremendous opportunity with coffee shop retailers, especially with the small and mid-size operators, to upgrade their rewards system. Page 6

Sample by Retail Program Type All 500 respondents were asked core questions relating to their retail rewards program membership and needs. In addition, respondents were randomly divided into subgroups to answer questions related to specific retail program types.
