Karen M. Doty artist educator designer www.karendoty.com Teaching Philosophy Good teaching is more a giving of right questions than a giving of right answers Josef Albers From the moment we breathe, we learn. Teachers surround us. Some teachers we meet upon our birth, others cross our path in everyday life, and some are assigned to us to teach us our career. Josef Albers once said that, Learning never ends. I strongly believe this is true. In design, technology, communication and understanding, the best professors are those who continue to learn and research the world around them. In my experience, teaching is similar to being a journalist. Everyone has a different learning style. Some students learn visually, others learn best through practice and demonstration. My experience as a professor and instructor has taught me the value of using innovative teaching to reach a variety of learners. As a professor, I use new literacies to teach my students in order to encourage ideas that will be purposeful in the modern world. In today s society, it is important for students to remain current in technology and understand how to use this technology to better their skills. Technology can benefit both students in fine arts and those in the digital world. A professor who recognizes this will be the most knowledgeable to their students in regards to technology use. Together both student and professor will ask the right questions and find answers in design and creativity. In addition, I feel it is best to provide an inspiring and encouraging atmosphere to foster community interaction in a classroom. Finally, I believe process is important. It is crucial to research, experiment and practice their design before deciding on a final product. Through process, one can discover new ways of thinking and find inspiration for future endeavors. We live a world of constant change. As a professor, I promise to continue to learn and research my profession so as to be the best teacher to my students.
