Floor Preparation (Test multiple areas for contamination) Before starting on the floor, inspect and prepare the work area. Check the floor for contamination in a corner of the room or a less visible area. Scrape the floor with a coin to see if the old finish is flaking. If it flakes, the floor may be contaminated. Wipe a small section of the floor with mineral spirits. If a wax residue appears as a shiny glaze on the rag, the floor may be contaminated. Check for overspray from cleaning products or other chemicals as these may contaminate the floor. Do not use Bona Prep and waterborne finishes on any floor that doesn t pass the contamination tests or that has been waxed or oiled. A full sand and refinish will be required. It is also recommended to do multiple sample tests in non-visible areas, using Bona Prep and Bona waterborne finishes to determine general compatibility prior to recoating. Before starting the Bona Prep process, vacuum or sweep the floor thoroughly to remove loose dirt and grit.
3 Easy Steps Step 1: Spray & Buff Spray Bona Prep over 3 x12 section of the floor. Mist the surface enough to be slightly wet, and abrade it using a 175 rpm buffer and a Bona Conditioning pad. This cleans the floor to ensure any foreign material is removed, and conditions and prepares the old finish to optimize the adhesion of Bona finish. Immediately after buffing, tack each section with a clean Bona Microfiber Mop dampened with Bona Prep. This removes any dirty residue before it dries. Instructional DVD For detailed training and product instructions, order the Residential Prep & Recoat System DVD #3243 available at your distributor, at Bona 800-872-5515 or on our Website at www.bona.com.
Step 2: Abrade Abrade the floor once it has dried using two Bona Conditioning Pads, one driving the other, so that the pad more effectively contours to the surface of the flooring. Corners, beveled edges and any visibly unabraded areas that can t be reached by the buffer should be done by hand. Tack the floor again to remove dust by using a Bona mop dampened with Bona Prep. Step 3: Apply Finish When the floor is completely dry, apply Bona Traffic HD, Bona Traffic, Bona Naturale or Bona Mega Clear HD waterborne finish, following the label instructions, within 2 hours of Bona Prep drying.
Floor Care Educate your customers on how to care for their hardwood floors. It will not only help maintain the beauty of the floor, but it will ensure a successful Prep & Recoat in the future. Common practices of cleaning hardwood floors with water and vinegar, or any cleaner with silicone or wax are not recommended. These can damage the wood and finish, possibly causing recoat adhesion failure in the future. Educate customers to dry-mop with a mop or untreated dustpad. When the floors need a more thorough cleaning, use a damp Bona Microfiber Mop and Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner.
