SUMMER SCHOOL COURSES Summer 2016 Dates and Procedures Arrowhead Summer School will be from June 13 July 21, 2016, Monday through Thursday. Classes meet for 2 ½ hours per class for 6 weeks. All courses are held at North Campus unless indicated differently in the description. Grades listed are the grade students enter 2016-17. Students will be registering for Summer School courses at the same time they are picking courses for the next school year. This is important for overall planning for students, including those who may be interested in improving their grades for courses already taken. Online requests are in priority of class in school (Example: Seniors first, then juniors, etc.) and the date of registration. Online registration for summer school course begins in February. If there are sufficient students enrolled to offer the course, students may continue to add, if space is available, until Monday, June 6, 2016. Information for Summer School is presented to students at the same time as information for the following school year. This occurs in January each year. Grades Students will receive the grade they earn during Summer School. If students are repeating a course and they earn a higher grade, the transcript will be updated to reflect the change. Students can only earn credit once for repeated classes. If a class is repeated for an increased grade, the students would not receive additional course credit. It should be noted that students may only earn credit for the course once. Effective for Class of 2018, the transcript will reflect the higher of the two grades and an R replaces the lower grade to identify the course was repeated. Courses are the same curriculum that is offered during the school year. Final Exams are required for all summer school courses. For year-long courses, Summer School classes may only be taken once to repeat a grade. Policies and Procedures An enrollment of 10 students is necessary for the course to be offered. No student absence is excused from summer school for any reason other than personal illness or an unforeseen emergency. Summer School students are expected to attend for the fullspecified term of the course. Every day and on time applies to Summer School. Students absent for more than two sessions will be dropped and an F placed on the transcript. PE Adventure Education students are allowed NO absences. Students who drop a full credit course after the first week will receive an F. The regular rules at Arrowhead concerning conduct and behavior apply in the summer session. Courses identified with an (*) are generally recognized as academic units for college admission The program is available to all residents of the Arrowhead School District who have satisfied book rental and/or miscellaneous fees as indicated. Children in the school district on a vacation basis will be considered as resident students providing they and their parents or legal guardians reside within the school district for the full 1
duration of the course selected. Students and parents/ legal guardian should contact their counselor prior to the end of the regular school year if they have questions or concerns. This is particularly important for students who are credit deficient. Summer School courses are listed by department and alphabetically. Note that there are times offered for each course to aid in planning. Please read the descriptions carefully so that expectations are clear for online classes. These students need to be self-directed, motivated, meet deadlines, participate weekly in forums, chats, and collaborative work. Courses ART DEPARTMENT Descriptions Design Concepts Photography Courses meet the Fine Arts Requirement for Graduation Design Concepts is a hands-on on the elements and principles of design. The goal of the course is to offer exposure, develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills and explore artistic abilities and interest working in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Students will have a firm foundation for further study in the visual arts as well as an appreciation of the role the arts have played in the development of our civilization and culture. This course is a prerequisite for most other art courses. Students enrolled in the ILE 9 should not take this art survey course in the summer prior to entering grade 9. Photography is a course designed for the student who is interested in the art, science, history and technology of the photographic process. Students will learn to see photographically through an exploration of the basic tools, techniques and aesthetics of digital photography, with an emphasis on creative use of camera controls, exposure, digital imaging software, and an awareness of issues in contemporary photography. Students will also learn to edit, process and manipulate digital images for use in different applications including the web, print, video, and computer applications using Adobe Photoshop and photo quality printers. This online/ blended course is for students interested in learning how to plan sports & entertainment events including studying areas of communications, event marketing, community relations, sponsorship, and special event promotions. Students will meet with business partners and community members to discuss building positive relationships. Students will also develop a social media page/program for a local business/school program/event. This course gives valuable hands-on event planning experience by helping plan Arrowhead s annual Hawkfest. Students meet the first day and last day of summer school as a whole class and have small group meetings during the six week course period. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS DEPARTMENT NEW for 2016: SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING AND EVENT PLANNING Credit:1 Grade- 11-12 Prerequisite- Must have taken at least one semester of Marketing & Business, Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Sales & Advertising, or Entrepreneurship Venture classes or recommendation from a business or marketing teacher Course Number Duration: 6 Week Summer School Class Period: Blended Online and Face to face English 9 English 10 Composition Creative Writing Courses Meet English Requirements for Graduation Composition is an online course and it will focus on the writing process. This will include the concepts of writing well: brevity, clarity, word choice, mechanics, voice, style, organization, audience, and paragraph development. Students will also study vocabulary with application to ACTtimed writing. A portfolio of work including narrative, informative, explanatory, impromptu and opinion will be compiled. Students are expected to meet with the online teacher at least once in a face to face setting. Creative Writing is an online course. Using Moodle, students will learn to write for a purpose (submit and publish pieces in contests, magazines, newspapers, literary journals, etc.), work independently on pieces for a variety of writer markets and work on individual interests. Students are expected to meet with the online teacher at least once in a face to face setting. Students enrolled in English 9 focus on learning literature, grammar skills, writing and mechanics, and speech. English 9 is a required course for graduation. English 10 a required course for graduation consisting of three main components: literature, writing and grammar, and communications. Literature will be specifically selected for Summer School. The writing component focuses on grammar review of key skills and solid paragraph and essay structure primarily for literature analysis. Students will deliver several oral presentations. They will learn strategies for preparing, organizing and delivering a speech. This Summer School course is for those students who have already taken English 10. HEALTH Health class emphasizes how individuals protect, maintain, and improve their health by developing, establishing and achieving positive life-style goals. This course is fast-paced and requires nightly outside reading. Students are to submit assignments on a weekly basis electronically. Topics: Wellness and Consumerism, Nutrition/Physical Activity, Alcohol/Tobacco/Medicines, Disease Prevention, First Aid/CPR/Safety, Mental Health, and *Human Growth and Development. Some weekly assignments require internet access outside of school. *If a parent wishes to have their child exempted from any or all areas of this section, independent study materials will be provided for that student during the exemption. Requests for exemption of all or part of Human Growth and Development must be submitted on the first day of health class. semester of the Algebra curriculum. Students who are enrolled in Algebra B during the school year are eligible to take this Summer School course. The Algebra B course grade on the transcript will be replaced with the Summer School grade and the title of Algebra B remains on the transcript. Geometry follows the course description from the regular Arrowhead High School Curriculum Guide. The Summer School course covers the 2 nd semester of the Geometry curriculum. Trigonometry and Statistics is for Freshmen (going into Sophomore year) who have completed Advanced Algebra and wish to enroll in Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus as a sophomore. It will cover the material covered in Advanced Algebra /Trigonometry that is not covered in the normal Advanced Algebra class. Completion will allow students to take AP Calculus BC senior year, and potentially earn credit for two semester of college level Calculus. MUSIC/THEATER Broadway Company is required for all troupe members. Students work with a professional choreographer, preparing for the fall music theater performance. Also included are vocal sessions, student leadership opportunities, and team building activities. Included in this 9-day study will be intensive work with character development, vocal part work and memorization, and intense dancing. Stage Crew members who wish to participate in stage crew camp with Broadway Company will focus on the following skills: 1. Set Design, Construction, and Shop Management 2. Lighting Design 3. Sound Design and Sound Operation 4. Stage Management Marching Band camp is required for all members. Students work to prepare for the fall marching band season. opportunities, team building exercises, intensive music rehearsal, memorization, marching drill rehearsal, and marching activities. Students meet from 8 a.m. 2 p.m. each day, with selected evening rehearsals. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Adventure Physical Education offers students outdoor experiences and recreational activities designed for lifetime fitness. Students must attend all of the classes to receive credit. There is an enrollment cap for this course. A lottery form must be completed and returned to the NC front office. Registration begins on Jan. 5 and will close on January 17. Class lists will be posted by Tuesday January 21, 2016. Performance Training is offered as a component of a school wide fitness and conditioning program. Students engage in movement through all planes of motion by establishing high levels of functional strength and neuromuscular efficiency. Classes will integrate flexibility, core, balance, plyometric, speed/agility/quickness, resistance, and cardio respiratory training. Due to its flexibility, this course is an excellent choice for the beginner to the highly skilled and will focus on improvement at all skill levels. Traditional Physical Education is similar to the curriculum offered during the school year in the individual and team courses. The initial class meeting will be at North Campus. Attendance and participation is mandatory. Each student must dress with appropriate attire for each unit. The class will use facilities at South and North Campuses. The class will meet on poor weather days without exception. SCIENCE The topics, expectations, and rigor of this course are similar to the full-year Biology course. Topics will be drawn from the major units in that course; characteristics and classification of living things, ecology, biochemistry, cellular structure and function, genetics, and evolution. The students will explore current events in society, as well as the background of these issues. Units include: economics, government, civil rights, urban problems, and foreign affairs. The class will consist of some predetermined issues, but will primarily be events and issues that arise during the summer. Students are expected to meet with the online teacher at least once in a face to face setting before the first day of class (date TBD) to discuss course expectations Political Science is an online course that teaches the American political system and deals with both *AMERICAN PROBLEMS CURRENT TOPICS Grade: 11-12 *POLITICAL SCIENCE 8
the structure and function of the government and the political factors which determine decision making. In this regard, current political events/issues will be studied. These issues will vary according to the policies and events the government is dealing with at the time of the class. Subject areas covered in the class will include the Constitution, ideology, political parties, interest groups, elections, Congress, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court, as well as current policy studies. Students should expect to read a great deal and complete a variety of writing assignments and projects. Work will be submitted online. Students are expected to meet with the online teacher at least once in a face to face setting. Psychology is an online course that incorporates scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Topics include research methods in psychology, the brain and nervous system, sensation and perception, memory, learning, personality, abnormal behavior, and states of consciousness. This summer school online version of Psychology will incorporate internet content, teacher designed PowerPoint presentations, participation in forums and self quizzes, and textbook readings. Most work will be submitted online; however, students will be required to complete four unit tests and one final exam under the supervision of a proctor. Grade: 10-12 Duration: 6 Week Summer School *PSYCHOLOGY Grade: 11-12 and in school test proctored The Summer School curriculum will select themes taught during the school year. This Summer School class is for students who have already taken Social Studies 9. GENERAL ELECTIVES ACT Prep includes diagnostic testing to identify personal strengths and weaknesses. Instruction reviews irregular verbs, punctuation, math equations, reading skills, and strategies to perform optimally on college admission tests. The last class is a post test to measure improvement and identify potential ACT scores. The College Essay Workshop will help students understand what admissions officers desire in an essay. Students will focus on the principles of good writing, including the components of a compelling narrative. Students will plan, draft, write, share and receive feedback from multiple teachers and students. They will learn about creating an application with purpose and consistency through example essays and readings. The workshop is face to face for Seniors only. Students need to supply their own device. This course is pass/fail. College Strategies is an online course. This class will focus on tools students need to be successful in college: sleep needs, time management, nutrition, self-advocacy skills, relaxation techniques, and test-taking skills. Students will be expected to meet with the online teacher at least once in a face to face setting. Students are expected to meet with the online teacher at least once in a face to face setting. Farm Class in an opportunity to help plan and create a sustainable garden with other students, staff, and members of the community. Students will learn basic concepts of sustainability through Experiential and Project Based Learning to discover the impact on social, economic and political issues in our country and around the world. The Arrowhead Garden is a hands-on learning lab utilized for the Farm Class. Please dress appropriately for spending time outdoors and be ready to get your hands dirty working in the garden. COLLEGE ESSAY WORKSHOP Credit: ¼ credit Grade:12 Prerequisite: none Duration: Dates to be Determined COLLEGE STRATEGIES Grade: 11-12 FARM CLASS Credit: Up to 1 credit based on student individualized learning plan Grade: 9-12 Prerequisite: Teacher Permission Duration: Summer School plus extended time Class Period: See description This is a work study/elective credit based on the student s Individualized Learning Plan (ILP). Class will run from June-August meeting two times per week for 1-2 hours. Flexibility will be allowed for family vacations and holidays. Flight is designed as a focused opportunity for seniors to plan ahead to get ahead on preparing for life after Arrowhead. This workshop format will focus on such topics as the college application, transcripts, choosing the right college, exploring majors and careers, obtaining letters of recommendations, scholarship opportunities, financial aid and senioritis. Using a variety of methods, including guest speakers, computer searches, projects and lectures students who successfully complete Flight will help students acquire skills to make college transition positive. Journalism is an online course. Students will report, write, edit, take photographs, and practice solid time management skills. Journalism work will be published in the AHS Newspaper. Students will be expected to meet with the online teacher at least once in a face to face setting. Jump Start focuses on preparing incoming freshmen to be successful in their transition to Arrowhead High School. Students will focus on improving reading through the completion of a novel and utilizing the Achieve 3000 reading program. They will improve writing skills through daily journal writing. Students will also learn strategies to tackle many common challenges for Arrowhead students such as stress management, goal setting, and peer pressure. Students will become familiar with computer logins, Google documents, Gmail accounts, and the Arrowhead Way philosophy. This course is designed as enrichment for any student interested in furthering their college and career readiness skills related to health occupations. Students will obtain CPR and First Aid certification, explore systems of anatomy, study the chemistry of the human body, demonstrate and apply therapeutic communication skills, learn desirable employability practices and techniques, be versed on nutritional guidelines and dietary awareness and acquire an experience in the health community. This course is required for students enrolled in the Health Youth Apprenticeship program. Spanish 1 follows the course description from the regular Arrowhead High School Curriculum Guide. The summer school course covers the 2 nd semester of the Spanish 1 curriculum-as a result it is the second semester grade that will be replaced. This course is for students who did not meet the 75% prerequisite to continue to Spanish 2 or for students that want to improve foundational skills before starting Spanish 2. Wings introduce freshmen to the high school experience to pave the way for a smooth transition to Arrowhead. The course consists of 3-half day sessions using team building, small groups, and other activities to help students get an introduction to the environment, meet new friends and become a part of the Arrowhead community.
