3 Minnesota State Requirements To graduate, all students must pass the MCA II Mathematics Reading Written Composition

4 ACT This year, all juniors are going to be required to take the ACT on Tuesday, April 28 th. There will be a make up test day on Tuesday, May 12 th. The test will be given during the school day. There will be no charge for this exam. It is important to take the test seriously! Scores from this test CAN be used for college admission purposes.

5 FREE ACT practice test Practice test Saturday, January 31 st 8:00a.m.- 12:00p.m. Register by January 22 nd Sign Info Session: February 21 st 9:00a.m.-11:30a.m. Info session is required to receive your scores.

7 Registration is Coming Your last chance. for free education to prepare yourself for life after high school It is important to have strong academic courses during your senior year.

8 As you register for classes for senior year, you should keep two things in mind: 1. Am I taking the courses required to graduate? - And - 2. Am I taking the courses necessary to prepare me for the next stage of my life?

9 NEW NEXT YEAR You MUST register for 16 courses and fill out a minimum of 4 alternates for your Senior Year! There will be NO Study Hall starting the school year.

12 It is ultimately your responsibility to know that you are getting the classes you need. Your counselor is your facilitator.

13 Required Subjects for Seniors ENGLISH (2 terms) Read the descriptions of the courses in the course guide carefully; some courses focus more on literature and others on writing. Writing is important for survival in college! Develop strong writing skills now. Remember that you are required to take an A and a B course to fulfill graduation requirements.

14 Required Subjects for Seniors SOCIAL STUDIES: All seniors must take Economics: An Applied Public Policy and Social Science Analysis (formerly known as Modern Problems)

15 Math: You will need 8 credits or 6 credits & 2 STEM credits Science: You will need 8 credits or 6 credits & 2 STEM credits Art: You need 2 credits (includes art; music; performing arts; and some ETD classes) If you have questions on what counts as art, ask your counselor

17 Hennepin Technical College (HTC Vo-Tech ) Explore technical career options at HTC Jump-start technical studies Half-day program Transportation provided WHS students may take a tour of HTC on Thursday, February 19 th. Permission slips are available in the CCC. Space is limited - 40 spots on a first come, first served basis. 32 Things to consider... Choosing a school is an intensely personal experience. Don t start out looking for the one best or perfect school. Start by creating a list of characteristics YOU would like to find in a school.

38 Minnesota Cooperative Admissions Program (MnCAP) A cooperative agreement among the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and local community colleges that guarantees admission to one of the participating majors after two years if certain criteria are met.

42 ACT/SAT Tests are offered on limited dates and pre-registration is required All tests are given on Saturdays *Test scores are not listed on the high school transcript. *ACT and SAT scores must be sent to colleges directly from testing agency! *Use your LEGAL NAME

43 Testing in the spring of Junior Year is highly recommended * Often the scores will be sufficient for the college the student selects. * If the score is not sufficient, there is time for preparation before testing in the fall.

44 Senior year can be expensive If application fees, ACT/SAT testing fees, etc., are a financial burden for your family, see your counselor about the possibility of financial assistance.

46 ACT SAT 5 Sections 45 Minutes of English 60 Minutes of Math 35 Minutes of Reading 35 Minutes of Science 30 Minute Essay* *The Essay is optional but highly encouraged 10 Sections Most sections are 25 minutes long and students alternate between Math and English/Reading. There is also an optional essay section

47 SAT Subject Tests Special tests required by some highly selective colleges (roughly 60 out of 4,000+ schools) One-hour tests on a variety of subjects such as American history, mathematics, and chemistry Can take one, two, or three tests in one day Juniors taking AP examinations might consider taking SAT Subject Tests in spring of junior year. SAT and SAT Subject Tests cannot be taken on the same day.

48 TEST PREPARATION? Do you: 1) Keep saying that you ll study for the ACT tomorrow? 2) Have trouble understanding why you re getting questions wrong? 3) Jump from topic to topic without focus? 4) Find yourself unable to complete a section in the allotted time? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might need a little structure to your study time.
