4 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING The Faculty of Engineering is the major provider of higher engineering education in the country. It offers a wide range of engineering programmes in areas which are important for the manpower needs of Brunei Darussalam. Undergraduate degree programmes are offered in the areas of Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum and Chemical Engineering. In addition, the Faculty offers Master and PhD degrees by research and has introduced taught master programmes from January 2106 in three areas namely MSc in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, MSc in Electrical Power System Engineering and MSc in Mechanical Engineering. The undergraduate programmes are four years in duration with two months industrial placement during the inter-semester breaks at the end of third year. The programmes have been restructured so that they can be accredited by professional institutions by 2017 which are important for international recognition and for realising ITB s vision to be amongst the best 10 engineering and technology universities in South East Asia by 2018. The general curriculum structure of the undergraduate programmes in the Faculty is shown below: Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Engineering Curriculum: Core for Degree 70-80%; Non-Core (Breadth, University Core) 20-30% Capstone project Major Core/Options Major Core/Options Degree Core Modules Breadth Modules University Core Modules Breadth: Leadership, Technopreneurship, Engineering and Society Professional Advancement Courses ITB Experience PLUS (local & overseas placement)

7 CIVIL ENGINEERING Civil engineers design, construct, supervise, operate and maintain large construction projects and systems. The Civil Engineering Programmes offered in Institut Teknologi Brunei consist of three specialised areas. They have options to gain basic civil engineering knowledge while advancing their knowledge in the geotechnical field, structural field or the general civil engineering with focus into water resources development, construction management and transportation. Graduates from the programmes will be confident in planning, designing and supervision of civil engineering projects. They will be introduced to the latest codes of practice, standards and subject matter enabling them to practice both locally and internationally. The programmes also consist of a period of industrial placement at the end of third year. This industrial placement aims to provide a platform for students to gain valuable workplace experience under the guidance of an industry mentor. Students will also be introduced into a research culture which will enable them to bring in research into their workplace to improve efficiency. This is also useful for graduates planning to undertake higher studies leading to PhD. Undergraduate programmes offered: Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Civil Engineering Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Civil and Structural Engineering Programme Entry Requirements A minimum of 240 A level points for 3 A-level passes in subjects including Mathematics (Grade C or higher) and two relevant science subjects (normally include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Further Mathematics, Design and Technology, Geography and Computing). 16 GRADUATES PROFILE It was a continuous learning throughout my four years of studies at ITB. It was a happy and joyful feeling to graduate in the area of Mechanical Engineering and be eligible for a variety of jobs in the country. The course was challenging but with the help of the lecturers and my course mates, I was able to succeed in my studies. Working in the study groups helped me to enhance my understanding of various modules throughout my studies. I am currently working as an education officer at Politeknik Brunei. I am confident that the knowledge and skills that I gained at ITB will help me to educate engineering students and lead me to a successful career in Politeknik Brunei. Mardiah bte Haji Bachee BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering Education Officer at Politeknik Brunei Life at ITB is groovy and the atmosphere is very energetic. I have watched ITB grow and flourish as new students joined ITB each year, for the past four years. The lecturers are very cooperative and willing to help the students in any way they can. I thank the Brunei Government for giving me these sweet memories and experiences that I will always treasure and remember long after I become a professional engineer. I can now say with confidence that ITB is a place where life and learning meet. Hassam Khan Wazir BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Communication Engineering Four years passed so fast and I remember clearly how these years were challenging, but with the guidance and support from lecturers I was able to excel. If the opportunity arrives I would want to pursue my further studies after getting a broader view of a workplace. No words can express how thankful I am to the lecturers who groomed me to be who I am today. I believe what I have learnt all these years will take me to another chapter of life. Soong Siaw Yin First Class Honours in BEng(Hons) in Electrical and Communication Engineering

17 After four years of study at ITB, I am very pleased with my knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering to start my career. The programme has helped me develop my intellectual and personal abilities. Some of the modules were very challenging but with the help of the lecturers and group studies, the difficulties were successfully managed. Performing practicals related to various theoretical topics was enjoyable and supportive to the theoretical studies. During my studies at ITB, I got a chance to go to South Korea to participate the Korean Government Invitation Programme. It was a wonderful educational experience. The industrial placement in Year 3 was an exposure to the work environment. Overall, my academic experience at ITB had been exciting and wonderful especially in the company of my enthusiastic coursemates. Nurliyana Binti Haji Mohd Ali BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering Current ITB student of MSc in Mechanical Engineering ITB EXPERIENCE PLUS The Experience PLUS programme in ITB is intended to provide a platform to extend students experience beyond the walls of academia. It is structured into the University s four-year undergraduate programmes and provides opportunities for all undergraduate students to partake in work attachment in local or overseas institutions to enhance their experiential learning and facilitate the attainment of life skills. The programme adds value to students academic qualifications and contributes towards the preparation of students for the world of business and industry. Students in ITB can also vie for overseas internship opportunities which are more competitive. Students must demonstrate a high standard of academic performance and be in the top 10% of the cohort in order to qualify for fully-funded overseas placements. Self-funded arrangements are also possible. The Deputy Dean of the School/Faculty can be contacted for further details.
