1 M.Sc. in Leadership in Health Professions Education The Program aims are to prepare health educators acquire the knowledge and skills to provide a leadership role in educating future health professionals and to contribute to the improved scholarship of teaching and learning in health education through evidenced based practice and research. Program Outcomes On successful completion of the MSc LHPE program, students will be able to: 1. Combine leadership skills with an in depth understanding of the spectrum of medical education. 2. Develop knowledge and skills in the area of health curriculum design, delivery, evaluation and assessment. 3. Promote and support a culture conducive to student learning and faculty professional development in the context of the health education environment. 4. Facilitate the development of a vision for teaching and learning in the health care setting that is shared by all stakeholders and responds to diverse community needs. 5. Assume a leadership role as an effective educator and advocate for improved health education delivery. 6. Effectively manage change in the health education context to deliver best practice in health education programs. 7. Promote the scholarship of teaching and learning and the place of education research that contributes to evidence-based practice. 8. Develop students ability to integrate skills and knowledge gained throughout the program and to apply these to an organizational development project. These competencies will be pursued through the provision of a flexibly structured program that allows for the needs and characteristics of diverse discipline fields and groups with a role in health education. 3 Year 1, NUI Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership in Health Professions Education: Planning Education Programs Teaching and Learning Methods Supervising Healthcare Professionals Completion of six modules constitutes the full requirements for a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership in Health Professions Education. These modules focus on curriculum design, delivery and supervision and then progress to explore assessment, program evaluation, change management and leadership in medical education and medical education research. Year 1, NUI Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership in Leadership in Health Professions Education: Planning Education Programs Teaching and Learning Methods Supervising Healthcare Professionals Learner Assessment in the Health Care setting Leadership in Health Professions Education Research and Evaluation in Health Education Year 2, NUI Masters in Leadership in Leadership in Health Professions Education: Completion of six modules including an applied educational leadership project based in the workplace constitutes the full requirements for a Masters in Leadership in Health Professions Education. 4 Admission Requirements A minimum cumulative grade point average (cgpa) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, its established equivalent in the applicant s primary degree program. As per programs taught in English, a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the Paper-Based, 213 on the Computer-Based, or 79 on the Internet- Based test, or its equivalent in a standardized English language test, such as 6.0 IELTS or another standardized, internationally recognized test approved by the Commission, with the following exceptions: - A native speaker of English who has completed his/her undergraduate education in an English-medium institution and in a country where English is the official language; - An applicant with an undergraduate qualification from an Englishmedium institution who can provide evidence of acquiring a minimum TOEFL score of 500 on the Paper-Based test, or its equivalent on another standardized test approved by the Commission, at the time of admission to his/her undergraduate program. Conditional admission requirements will apply: A student with a recognized baccalaureate degree and a TOEFL score of less than 550 or its equivalent on another standardized test approved by the Commission may be admitted conditionally to a Master s program. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to dismissal: - Must achieve a TOEFL score of 550, or equivalent, by the end of the student s first semester of study; - May take a maximum of six credit hours in the first semester of study, not including intensive English courses; - Must achieve an overall grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale, or its established equivalent, in the first nine credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied for the Master s program. A student with a recognized baccalaureate degree with a cumulative grade point average below 3.00 on a 4.0 scale, or its established equivalent, and who meets the English language competency requirements for general admission may be admitted conditionally to a Master s program. Such a student must achieve an overall grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale, or its established equivalent, in the first nine credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied for the Master s program or be subject to dismissal. 5 students may take a maximum of nine credit hours in the first semester of study. Discretionary Criteria for entry to the MSLHPE program: A small number of students who do not meet the normal criteria may be considered for a place on the program on the basis of their work experience and other relevant educational achievements. Applicants will be expected to have at least three years experience in the broad area of teaching health professionals. Selection of applicants may include an interview. While the program is designed to qualify participants to Masters Level, students who successfully complete 30 credits (ECTS) can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership in Health Professions Education. Students who complete 60 credits (ECTS) will be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership in Health Professions Education, should they choose to exit at these stages. The program is placed on level nine of the Qualifications Framework. Graduate Catalog
