Hairdressing & Barbering The Hairdressing and Barbering Industry is fast moving and vibrant. Stylists have unique skills and it is a known fact that hairdressers and barbers love their work and gain enormous pleasure working with the public to enhance their well-being. The Industry will be around forever; it has an amazing product and in today s society with job losses and failing industries it is a gifted skill for the trained individual which will never go away. There is a wide variety of training courses and programmes for individuals wanting to enter the profession, up-skill or specialise, a core example of this is Apprenticeship described further on pages 14 to 17. Some of the core areas covered within an apprenticeship are detailed here. Level Two (Intermediate Hairdressing Apprenticeship) Advise and consult with clients; shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp; customer service and client care; selling skills; blowdrying; styling and finishing hair; setting and dressing hair; colouring, perming and cutting hair (basic cuts only). Level Three (Advanced Hairdressing Apprenticeship) Providing colour correction services; creatively dressing long hair; creating a variety of permed effects; creatively cutting hair (advanced cutting); taking part in a photo shoot/ hair show or other type of Industry related event. Apprenticeship frameworks will also include: = Employment Rights & Responsibilities = Maths & English functional skills in-line with sector needs = Personal learning and thinking skills Level Two (Intermediate Barbering Apprenticeship) Advise and consult with clients; shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp; creatively cut hair using barbering techniques; dry and finish men s hair, change men s hair colour; customer service and client care; selling skills. Level Three (Advanced Barbering Apprenticeship) Provide colour correction services; design and create a range of facial hair shapes; provide shaving services; provide face massage services; design and create patterns in hair. Apprenticeship frameworks will also include: = Employment Rights & Responsibilities = Maths & English functional skills in-line with sector needs = Personal learning and thinking skills Beauty Therapy & Nail Services The Beauty Therapy and Nail Service Industries are one of the fastest growing Industries. A service that was once considered a luxury is now enjoyed by an ever-increasing number of people. The growth of nail salons can be witnessed on almost every High Street. As a therapist or nail technician you will build up skills that will ensure job mobility within salons, spas and health clubs in this country, on board cruise liners and in international holiday resorts that span the world. There is a wide variety of training courses and programmes for individuals wanting to enter the profession, up-skill or specialise, a core example of this is Apprenticeship described further on pages 14 to 17. Level Two (Intermediate Beauty Therapy Apprenticeship) Selling services or products to clients; facial skin care treatment; enhancing the appearance of eyebrows and lashes; waxing services; providing manicure and pedicure services; salon reception skills; providing make-up services. Level Three (Advanced Beauty Therapy Apprenticeship) Providing body and facial electrical treatments; providing body and facial massage treatments; providing electrical epilation treatments; selling and promotional skills (additional optional units could include Aromatherapy; Indian Head Massage). Apprenticeship frameworks will also include: = Employment Rights & Responsibilities = Maths & English functional skills in-line with sector needs = Personal learning and thinking skills Level Two (Intermediate Nail Services Apprenticeship) Salon reception duties; selling and providing services or products to clients; providing manicure and pedicure services; carrying out nail art services. Level Three (Advanced Nail Services Apprenticeship) Apply and maintain nail enhancements to create a natural finish; enhance and maintain nails using UV gel; enhance and maintain nails using liquid and powder. (additional optional units could include plan, design and provide nail art services). Spa Therapy Michael John Academy operates a fully-equipped working Spa. Our Spa of Tranquility is run commercially and provides learners with a top class real working environment in which to train. The spa industry continues to grow with most clients expecting to be offered spa treatments within hotels, health clubs and / or fitness centres. To become a qualified Spa Therapist you must already be qualified as a Level Two Beauty Therapist. Ideally you may have Level Three Beauty Therapy Units which will enable you to progress more quickly. The preferred route of entry into the Spa profession is through an Advanced Apprenticeship or Level 3 Adult learning route. More information on Advanced Apprenticeship can be found on pages 16 and 17. Some of the core areas covered within an apprenticeship are detailed here. Level Three (Advanced Spa Therapy Apprenticeship) Selling skills; provide body massage treatments; provide stone therapy treatments; monitor clients and the operation of sauna, steam and hydrotherapy treatments; provide body wrapping and flotation treatments. Apprenticeship frameworks also include: = Employment Rights and Responsibilities = Maths and English functional skills in line with sector needs = Personal learning and thinking skills Employment Prospects There is an incredible, diverse range of employment opportunities for those who are undertaking training in hair and beauty. Some stylists / therapists hold positions in salons in the local area; where others use their skills to gain employment overseas. Study Programmes Michael John Academy Study Programmes are for any young person wishing to study or develop skills and knowledge of the hair or beauty profession. Study programmes are made up of CORE elements including: = A vocational qualification in your chosen area = A substantial work placement = Functional Maths and English Some examples of Study Programme vocational routes include: City & Guilds Qualifications: = Diploma in An Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector (Level 1) = Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 1) = Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering (Level 1) = Diploma in Women s Hairdressing (Level 2) = Diploma in Barbering (Level 2) = Diploma in Beauty Therapy (Level 2) = Diploma in Nail Technology (Level 2) QualificatioN The vocational route and level you take will be selected according to YOUR individual needs. All our Study programmes will include an Employability and Personal Development Qualification to help support and prepare you for potential work within your Industry of choice. Duration and Attendance Study programmes generally last an academic year up to 38 weeks and students will attend 3 days or more per week with time spent within a work placement. E n t r y C r i t e r i a = Enthusiasm to participate in hair/ beauty training = Completion of Induction & Initial Assessment process Introduction Study programmes are very personalised routes to support young students (aged 16-18) to reach their full potential. Training includes both practical and background knowledge sessions. Employment support can be provided to students wanting to progress onto an employed apprenticeship. Progression = Further Higher Level Study Programme = Traineeship or Employed Apprenticeship in chosen sector area = Full time employment in the Industry as a salon junior. Equipment No equipment is required on start, however you will be given an appropriate salon tunic/overall and you will need to wear suitable footwear. All this will be explained within Induction. Anything else? Study programme students can be issued with an Arriva bus pass or have travel costs reimbursed (whichever is most cost effective). You may also be eligible for a Learner Bursary to help support you with any costs associated with your learning such as travel, equipment, books etc. 10 11

Traineeship Traineeships are for young people aged 16 to 24 who aspire to be an apprentice but are not quite ready. Young people who are not currently in a job and have little or no work experience will be given a programme of support enabling them to: = undertake a substantial work placement offering a real and valuable insight into the world of work = achieve a vocational qualification = improve their Math and English skills = increase employability skills whilst achieving an employability award. Traineeships can last from two to six months and the work placement provider will be hoping to offer their trainee an employed apprenticeship on training end. QUALIFICATIONS Traineeships will commence with a focused work preparation programme leading to achievement of an Employability and Personal Development Qualification. Vocational qualifications available are: = Level 2 Certificate in Hair Services = Level 2 Certificate in Barbering = Level 2 Certificate in Beauty Therapy Services = Level 2 Certificate in Nail Technology DURATION AND ATTENDANCE: Attendance is for 4 days per week and can last from two to six months. The aim of this programme is to secure an employed apprenticeship so you will be encouraged to achieve this as soon as you can. ENTRY CRITERIA: = Aged 16-24 = Aspire to be an Apprentice in the Hair or Beauty Industry = Focused on work and the prospect of it = Completion of Induction & Initial Assessment process INTRODUCTION: Traineeships are designed to support participants onto an apprenticeship. Students will be focused on work as an objective and will be given information, advice and guidance to enable them to develop the skills, qualities and attitude that employers are looking for. Trainees can be moved into an apprenticeship at any time during their traineeship and at the end of the traineeship if they have not secured an apprenticeship with their work placement provider they will receive a reference to support them into a new apprenticeship opportunity. PROGRESSION: = Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in chosen sector area 12 EQUIPMENT: No equipment is required on start. You will require a salon overall/ tunic and must wear suitable footwear, all this will be explained to you within Induction. ANYTHING ELSE? Trainees will be issued with an Arriva bus pass or have travel costs reimbursed (whichever is most cost effective). You may also be eligible for a Learner Bursary to help support you with any costs associated with your learning such as travel, equipment, books etc, further information will be given on Induction. 13

Intermediate Apprenticeships Qualification/s: = Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Nail Services or Barbering = Level 1 Functional Maths and English = Intermediate Apprenticeship Framework Certificate Duration and Attendance: = Approximately 18 24 months = One day per week in centre (5 hrs) = Further 25 hrs or more per week with salon employer An INTERMEDIATE APPRENTICESHIP is an exciting way to EARN WHILE YOU LEARN In order to become an Apprentice you must be EMPLOYED and Michael John Academy have a Team of Employer Liaison Officers who can advise you of our employer vacancies and support you to apply either on-line via the National Apprenticeship Vacancy System http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/be-an-apprentice/searching-for-vacancies.aspx or directly via Michael John Academy. Intermediate Apprenticeship offers a programme of learning and skill development up to LEVEL TWO (equivalent to 5 GCSE s Grades A C) If you have already achieved this level of qualification in school please ask on application about our FAST Track Options In all cases Apprenticeships include one or more of the following: = Achievement of an NVQ/Diploma qualification in your sector choice = A maths and/or english qualification = Knowledge of your employment rights and responsibilities = Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Many apprentices start off their course as apprentices and progress onto an advanced apprenticeship. You may be able to progress faster if you have prior experience or learning. Michael John Academy will ask you about this during your Initial Assessment and it could reduce your Intermediate Apprenticeship duration helping you to move on to an Advanced Apprenticeship more quickly. Entry Criteria: = Employment within the sector (support in securing employment is available for those without employment) = Employment is expected to be for 30 hours per week and paid at the Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage rate as applicable at time of entry = Ability to participate in Level 2 training / assessment Introduction: The apprenticeship programme includes a framework of qualifications to prove your effectiveness in salon, including practical skills, essential knowledge and understanding. All elements of the framework are mandatory, but evidence of prior learning / experience will be considered. Most apprentices attend their training centre on a day release basis. Half the day is spent participating in practical training / assessment; with background knowledge delivered during the remaining time. Progression is supported by training and assessment in the workplace. Progression: = Advanced Apprenticeship = Employment = Full time education Equipment: = Salon Uniform = Hairdressing and barbering apprentices require their own scissors Anything Else? = You must be employed in order to participate in an apprenticeship programme. = Learners aged 16 69 are eligible to participate in this programme 14 Fees: Learners aged 16 18 at the start of the programme are fully funded (no charge) Learners aged 19+ at the start of the programme may be fully funded, co-funded or charged the full value of the course depending on individual circumstances. We will advise you on an individual basis of funded opportunities available to you. 15

16 Advanced Apprenticeships An ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP helps you to increase your EARNING POTENTIAL whilst in the job that you enjoy. Most Advanced Apprentices are EMPLOYED by the employer that has supported and trained them throughout their Intermediate Apprenticeship. If this is not the case Michael John Academy have a Team of Employer Liaison Officers who can advise you of Advanced Apprenticeship employer vacancies and support you to apply either on-line via the National Apprenticeship Vacancy System http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/be-an-apprentice/searching-for-vacancies.aspx Or directly via Michael John Academy. All elements of the framework are mandatory, but evidence of prior learning / experience will be considered. Most advanced apprentices attend their training centre on a day release basis. Half the day is spent participating in practical training / assessment; with background knowledge delivered during the remaining time. Progression is supported by training and assessment in the workplace. Learners aged 19+ at the start of the programme may be fully funded, co-funded or charged the full value of the course depending on individual circumstances. Learners aged 24 or above can fund courses through 24 plus Advanced Learning Loans. MJA staff can offer advice to individuals on the funding opportunities available. 17

Private training options and 24+ advanced learning loan opportunities. Michael John Academy offers a range of privately funded training options, ranging from 90 minutes in duration (short courses) to full programmes lasting up to 18 months. Short Courses These are courses lasting from 90 minutes to a full day that provide focused training on a specific skill. These courses are considered by salon owners to be essential if their staff are to remain up to date with new techniques and industry development. Examples of the courses offered include: = Minx Nails 90 minutes = Artificial Lashes 3 Hours = Cutting Workshop 3 Hours = Shaving Workshop 3 Hours = Waxing 3 Hours = Spray Tanning Full Day Short courses are popular and will be arranged to reflect new Industry developments or techniques, our short course calendar and price list is published annually, please contact Michael John Academy for a current version. Accredited Training Michael John Academy offer a wide range of courses and any of these are available to privately funded students. Level three or above courses can be funded for students aged 24 or above via 24 plus Advanced Learning Loans. (See page 23) All our courses are listed within our prospectus which can be accessed via our web-site www.michaeljohnacademy.com Programmes for unemployed/employed adult learners. In order to ensure Adult learners are provided with a range of offer Michael John Academy have short nine to eleven week courses to support unemployed adults back in to work and longer full level two or level three programmes for Adults not in receipt of benefit who are therefore able to attend the lengthier durations required. Adult courses specialise in areas of Hairdressing, Barbering, Beauty Therapy, Nail Services or Spa Therapy and a Level Four Diploma in Management practice and Advanced Techniques in the Hair and Beauty sector is also available to students with level three capabilities who want to progress further into supervisory, management positions or business ownership/ self-employment. Support Support for Learners The team at Michael John Academy will support you every step along the way; if you require support outside our area of expertise we will direct you to someone who is able to help you. Over the years MJA have built upon their learner support resources and are proud to be able to offer you an excellent support service in a range of areas: Financial We can offer financial support in the form of bursaries to learners who may struggle to fund transport, lunch or other costs. We can put you in touch with CARE TO LEARN funding and support for Child Care needs. We can offer subsidised bus passes to employed learners to help reduce transport costs. If you are not entitled to fully funded courses we can signpost you to potential Career Development Loans or 24 plus Advanced Learning Loans if appropriate. Employment Our Employer Responsive Team can source job vacancies and arrange interviews on your behalf. We will ensure you and your employer understands the standards expected of your programme. We will also provide on-going support and advice to both you and your employer throughout your training programme. Careers Education and Guidance Michael John Academy have achieved an Award recognising the quality of our Information, Advice and Guidance service. We have a designated career development service led by a specialist team who are fully conversant with the Industry and it s expectations. Learning Support A highly valued and effective Learning Support Team will provide additional learning support to learners who require extra help in Math s or English. This includes one to one support, help with reading, help with spelling, speaking and listening, help with calculation and using numbers and/or assignment support. Professional well-qualified staff will support learners with learning needs such as dyslexia; dyspraxia or discalcula. Pastoral Support Michael John Academy is unique as a work-based learning provider for the standard of pastoral guidance and support. We provide learners with a confidential support service led by a fully qualified social support worker. Support advice may include a counseling service; advice with regard to health and well-being, housing, benefits and other family/ social issues. Support for learners with disabilities Over the years we have successfully supported learners with hearing impairments, learning difficulties and physical disabilities. Our new academy is fully disability compliant with a lift and variety of disabled facilities. Specialist equipment will be sourced, accessed and provided as required. Safeguarding / First Aid/ Fire Awareness All Michael John Academy staff hold enhanced Criminal Records Disclosures. (CRB s) We have two qualified Safeguarding Officers and each centre has a qualified and deputised First Aid Officer on staff. The majority of staff have Fire Awareness Certificates to ensure all aspects of Fire Safety are complied with. We have a variety of certificate and badge awards which are gifted to learners who progress or display exceptional personal skills or knowledge. Certificates are presented to learners demonstrating considerable progress in the development of their personal, social or employability skills. Examples of certificates awarded include: = Excellent Teamwork = Excellent Customer Service = Salesperson of the Month Michael John Academy encourage learners to participate in enrichment activities to increase confidence and creative skills. Events include: The Michael John Academy Annual Hair and Beauty Competition Week Michael John Academy host an annual hair and beauty competition week in which all learners are encouraged to participate. Events throughout the week will provide every learner with an opportunity to create and display their artistic talents in their specialist sector area. Learners are given criteria to work with according to the competition theme, which over recent years have included: Fantasy Futuristic, A Night at the Oscars and Catwalk Extravaganza. All competitors and their salon employers will receive a framed professional photo of their model entry which can be displayed within their workplace. Festival of Hair and Beauty, Blackpool This event is promoted as being the biggest and best hair and beauty show in the country and includes competitions, championships, promotional activities and networking opportunities. Learner Achievement Badges Badges are awarded to learners achieving units or full qualifications, these include the following: = Scissor badges for hairdressing / barbering intermediate apprentices = Make-up brush badges for beauty therapy / nail services intermediate apprentices = Scroll badges for study programmes = Advanced Apprenticeship completion badges Professional Hairdresser Live, Manchester This event showcases the latest innovations from top manufacturers and provides free business and creative seminars from the hairdressing elite. Professional Beauty, Manchester Exhibitors from the whole spectrum of the beauty therapy industry is represented, including skincare, spa, equipment, nails and tanning representatives. The event includes the opportunity to participate in seminars and conferences. Fundraising Activities Michael John Academy learners regularly participate in fundraising activities to support charities. Activities include Wear It Pink week in aid of cancer Campaign and fundraising in aid of the cancer charity My New Hair. 20 21

Funding Michael John Academy work with learners to check their eligibility for funded training opportunities, such as Apprenticeships or Adult Learning. Where eligible, learners may be entitled to receive full or partial funding All fees quoted include: = Registration with City and Guilds = Training by experienced, qualified staff = Access to Smart Screen online support = Assessment of practical skills and background knowledge = Internal and External Verification = City and Guilds Certification What do we mean by full or partial funding? Full funding this is where you are eligible to receive funding to cover the full cost of your training. You will not receive the money yourself, but Michael John Academy will be able to claim this to cover the cost of your training Partial funding is where you are eligible to receive funding to support part of your training. You will not receive the money yourself, but Michael John Academy will be able to claim some funds towards the cost of your training. You or your sponsor will need to fund the remainder of the training. If you are to receive partial funding for your training, you will be liable to pay the outstanding amount. EG 50% funding will result in you being liable for paying 50% of the full cost. Not eligible for funding unfortunately you are not eligible to receive funding to support your training and you or your sponsor must pay the full cost of your training. Professional and Career Development Loans - Professional and Career Development Loans are bank loans that can be used to help to pay for work related learning. You can borrow between 300 and 10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year s relevant unpaid practical work). The Education Funding Agency will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. Because the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, they should only be considered as an option once all other student funding options have been investigated. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans If you re starting a course on or after 1 August 2013 you may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. These loans help you to pay the tuition fees charged by colleges and training organisations. Most learners aged 24 and over, studying at level 3 and above, will qualify for these new loans from the UK government. It s easy to apply, your household income isn t taken into account and there s no credit check. Enrolling on an eligible course at level 3 and above which includes: A levels, Access to HE Diplomas, other Diplomas and Certificates, Advanced Apprenticeships or Higher Apprenticeships making the right choice It s important you consider your own circumstances and look into all options for paying for your course before choosing to take out a loan. You can get independent financial advice from the Money Advice Service at www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk how much can I get? The amount you can get depends on your course, the tuition fees charged by your college organisation and maximum amounts set by the Government. The minimum loan amount is 300. You can take out a loan for the maximum amount to cover your tuition fee or you can pay all or part of the tuition fee yourself. course tuition fees The tuition fee for your course will be set by your college or training organisation.
