If you want to keep your scores and notes on an assessment in progress but not yet mark the assessment as complete, you may click the Save button. You may wish to assess the student s performance at different intervals throughout the instructional period to gauge how well the student comprehends the material. The LCE system enables you to have more than one scoresheet associated with a competency for a student s Performance Battery Assessment. However, you can only edit new scoresheets (previous scoresheets will be viewable, but not editable). The SCAR screen only shows the score for the most recently completed Performance Battery. Click the Date hyperlink to access the scoresheets and view their status. CEC Life Centered Education System: Teacher Portal Guide 21

Managing a Student s Assignments The student dashboard provides a list of recent worksheets and assessments assigned to the student, including the date assigned, the due date, and the student s progress status with the assignment. For information about how to assign worksheets, activities, and assessments to students, see Using the Curriculum Matrix on page 24. You may click the blue More button to access all of the student s assignments, or you may click on the Assignments tab in the Student submenu. The Assignments page displays. The Assignments page shows all of the worksheets and Knowledge Battery Assessments assigned to the student. To view a student s assignment, click on the name of the assignment in the Worksheets table or Knowledge Battery Assessments table. In the LCE system, worksheets are graded differently from battery assessments, therefore the options available when viewing assignments vary slightly. Worksheet assignments are view-only; you cannot make changes directly to a student s worksheet. Worksheets are graded based on status only (completed, in progress, or not started). However, when you click on a student s Knowledge Battery Assessment assignment, you may either click Save to keep the assignment open for changes, or you may click Complete to automatically grade the assignment and view the student s correct and incorrect answers. Click the Edit link in the Action column to change the due date or status of an assignment (worksheet or Knowledge Battery Assignment), or to send a message to the student about the assignment. Click Update to save your changes. The system displays a confirmation message that the assignment was updated successfully. CEC Life Centered Education System: Teacher Portal Guide 22

Creating an Initial Competency Rating Scale (CRS) Assessment The Competency Rating Scale (CRS) is an observational instrument used as an additional, nonquantitative assessment of a student s abilities and skills. CRS assessment results are not reported on the Student Competency Assessment Record (SCAR). The CRS is designed to be completed by both teachers and parents. For a more detailed reference on Competency Rating Scale (CRS) Assessments, refer to the LCE: Skills for the 21st Century: Teacher Guide. To begin a CRS assessment, click on the main Students tab at the top of the screen in the teacher portal, and then click the name of the student that you would like to view. The dashboard page for the student displays. Click on the Competency Rating Scale (CRS) tab in the submenu at the top of the student s dashboard screen. The Yearly CRS Assessment page displays. The system allows you to complete a CRS assessment for each of the three main domains. Click Start to begin the CRS assessment survey. The CRS assessment screen displays all of the competencies and subcompetencies for the selected domain. Each subcompetency receives an evaluation rating. You may select from four options for each subcompetency topic Not Competent, Partially Competent, Competent, or Not Rated. At the bottom of the screen, you may enter additional comments. Then, click Save to keep your progress to continue later, or click Complete to add the assessment officially to the student s record. CEC Life Centered Education System: Teacher Portal Guide 23

Chapter 4. Using the Curriculum Matrix The Life Centered Education (LCE) curriculum is comprised of the three overarching domains of knowledge and skills required to live independently and successfully as an adult: daily living skills, selfdetermination and interpersonal skills, and employment skills. For a more detailed reference on the philosophy, history, methods, and goals of the LCE curriculum, refer to the LCE Teacher s Guide: Skills for the 21st Century. The Curriculum Matrix section of the LCE teacher portal allows you to identify and use the lesson plans and accompanying instructional materials in all areas of the curriculum, from the top-level domains down to the competencies, subcompetencies, and objective. Each objective is supported by at least 3 lessons plans to teach that objective. The lesson plans are at three levels of complexity awareness, exploration, and preparation, and the lesson plan numbers reflect the level at which that lesson plans operates. The Curriculum Matrix section has three major areas Browsing the Curriculum and Lessons, Building a Knowledge Battery Assessment and Assigning a Knowledge Battery. Browsing the Curriculum and Lessons To browse or search the curriculum, click on the Curriculum Matrix tab at the top of the screen in the teacher portal. The Browse Curriculum section displays by default. You may click on a top-level domain to drill down further into a particular topic, or you may enter a specific keyword into the Search box to display all relevant topics. Domain Competency Subcompetency Objective CEC Life Centered Education System: Teacher Portal Guide 24

Understanding Lesson Plans Lesson plans provide procedures, techniques, and resources for teaching a particular concept or skill. A lesson plan correlates with a specific objective, and will include activities, instructional strategies and resources, and evaluations, and may also provide supporting worksheets and fact sheets. You can reach lesson plans in the LCE system by navigating to Curriculum Matrix > Browse Curriculum, and either browsing through the domains, or entering a keyword in the Search box. Each Lesson Plan in LCE provides a tabbed submenu with the instructional materials for the learning objective. Additionally, on the right side of the screen, the system shows whether the lesson plan supports one or more of the Common Core State Standards, and if so, which one(s). The Overview tab displays by default when you click on a Lesson Plan link. The Overview describes the lesson objective, instructional resources, and the intention of what students will learn from the lesson. The Activities tab provides suggested activities to use in instruction. The Alternative Instructional Strategies tab suggests different activities that you can be use to teach the lesson to address differing student abilities and needs. CEC Life Centered Education System: Teacher Portal Guide 25

For more information on alternative strategies and lesson plan enhancements, see page 24 of the LCE: Skills for the 21st Century: Teacher Guide. The Evaluations tab provides evaluation activities and criteria for you to use to determine whether or not each student has met the lesson objectives. If most students do not meet the evaluation criteria, you should repeat the lesson and activities. Evaluations may be oral or written, depending on the capabilities of individual students. The Assign Worksheets tab lists available worksheets that apply to the lesson objective. You may assign any of the lesson s worksheets to any student, group of students, or entire classrooms. See Assigning a Knowledge Battery on page 27 for more information. The Assign Worksheets tab is only used to assign practice materials to students. To assign a Knowledge Battery Assessment, which includes scoring capabilities within the LCE system, see Assigning a Knowledge Battery on page 30. Chapter 5. Generating Reports The LCE system enables you to create report cards for students based on different domains, competencies, objectives, and lessons. Reports can compile the student s progress based on the knowledge battery assessment or performance battery data in the system. For information on how to build and assign a Knowledge Battery Assessment, see Building a Knowledge Battery Assessment on page 28. For information on how to administer a Performance Battery, see Administering a Performance Battery Assessment on page 20. Creating a New Report Click on the Report tab at the top of the screen. The Reports page displays. There are three sections on the Reports page: Create Report, Filter By Curriculum, and Filter Results. Create Report In this section, you must specify the type of report that you want to generate Knowledge Battery Assessment or Performance Battery. A Knowledge Battery Assessment report compiles the data for a student s progress on knowledge-based assessments. A Performance Battery report compiles the data for a student s progress on performance-based assessments (visually observed responses and manually-managed scoresheets). If desired, you may enter a name for the report. CEC Life Centered Education System: Teacher Portal Guide 31

Filter by Curriculum In the next section of the Reports page, you may specify the curriculum areas that the system includes in the generated report. You may narrow the results shown in the report based on the different domains, competencies, subcompetencies, and objectives in the curriculum. Click the blue Apply Filter button to show the expanded options in a particular section of the curriculum. To produce a general report based on one domain or the entire curriculum (the system s default option), select the Show All radio button. Filter Results In the Filter Results section of the Reports page, you must select a student from the Choose Student drop-down menu. The other fields in this section are optional. You may narrow down the results shown in the report depending on the school year, grade level, classroom location, teacher, and timeframe. Click the blue Submit button to generate the student s report card. Or, you may click the Reset button to enter new settings without running the report.
