6 Introducing the Online School (OLS ) K¹² is America's largest provider of online education for grades K-12. The K12 curriculum is managed and maintained through the Online School (OLS). Throughout the OLS, you can access your child s lessons, track their progress, record their attendance and even schedule their vacation days. Logging In 1. Go to Note: Please log in to the OLS from your usual school website. This will help you to stay current on local school announcements and data. 2. Click OLS Login in the upper right hand corner of K12 s Home page. The OLS login page will open in a new window. 6

7 3. Type your User Name and Password Note: If you have not registered to use the OLS, select Set Up Your Account under the Account Registration section. See Setting Up Your Account. 4. Click the Log In button. You will be taken to the OLS Home page. 7

8 OLS Home page The OLS Home page allows you and your student to navigate and access all that K12 s online school has to offer. This includes your K-Mail, your To Do List for each day, and of course all of your student(s) course lessons including the K12 community forums, such as the Big Think and the Family Directory. The Home page can be broken up by area and menu. There are two menus: the My Account menu and the Main Menu. There are five main areas on the Home page: K-Mail and Announcements, your To Do List for the day, the list of your student(s) and links to their plans, progress, and coursework in the My Students area, a Quick Links section to the K12 community forums, and finally the Promotions and Events area. 8

9 My Account Menu You can access account information for yourself or your student, log into the OLS for your student or log out of the OLS from the My Account menu. To Edit Basic Account Information for Yourself 1. Select My Account 2. Select My Account from the drop down menu Your account information displays in a pop up window. 9

10 Your account information includes your username and password, a security question and answer to protect your password, and your and phone numbers. 3. Edit any of the fields. Note: All of the fields that have an * to the left are required fields. Select Reset to clear any updates you have made to your student s account information. You must contact your teacher or school office to update your address. 4. Select Save once you have completed making updates to your account information. Your account information will be updated. 10

11 Tip: Suggest a Username If you are having a hard time creating a username that hasn t already been used, you can utilize the Suggest a Username tool. 1. Select Suggest A Username A computer generated user name will appear in the username field. 11

12 To Edit Your Student s Account Information 1. Select My Account 2. Select Your Student s Account Your student s account will display in a pop up window like your account information, but will not include a security question and answer option. 3. Edit any of the fields. Note: All of the fields that have an * to the left are required fields. Select Reset to clear any updates you have made to your student s account information. 12

13 You must contact your teacher or school office to update your address. 4. Select Save, once you have completed making updates to your account information. Your account information will be updated. Logging in For Your Student If you need to log in for your student, you can do so from your Home page in the OLS. To Log In for A Student 1. Click New Log In from the upper right hand My Account menu 2. The Login Page opens. The OLS login page will open in a new window. 3. Type your Student s User Name and Password 4. Click the Log In button. You will be taken to your Student s OLS Home page. If at any time you need to check on your orders and shipments, you can do so from the My Account menu. 13

14 To Access Information about Orders and Shipments 1. Select My Account 2. Select Orders and Shipments You are taken to the Overview screen. 3. Select My Orders A list of your orders and their shipping statuses are displayed. By default, your order page is automatically set to the most recent order for your student(s). You can change the settings so that you may view orders for a single student or orders that are 12 to 24 months old. 4. Select the Order number to view the details of a particular order 14

15 You ll see the details of an order. You can view even more information about the order by selecting the Provided Materials, Shipment Status or Tracking Number links. Please note,, to the left of the provided materials list you will see a symbol denoting if you need to return, return if unused, or do not return certain materials. 15

16 To View the Provided Materials 1. Select the linked Provided Materials The list of provided materials will appear below the link with their specific SKU number, as well as the number of items you should receive in your shipment. 16

17 To View the Shipping Status of your Order 1. Select the linked Status to view whether your materials have been shipped. A small window will pop up detailing if your order has been shipped and when it s expected to arrive. To View Tracking Information of your Order 1. Select the Tracking Number A window will open detailing the tracking history of your order. 17

18 For your student s daily school activities you will use the OLS Home page to access lessons, attendance, K-Mail and even to connect with your student s teachers. 18

19 Main Menu The Main Menu consists of drop down menus that can quickly direct you to not only your student s lessons plans, but areas where you can review their progress and their coursework, as well as access your K-Mail, community forums and any and all help that K12 can provide. The Main Menu will always appear along the top of the screen regardless of where you are in the online school. 19

20 Home Every resource and tool that you may need is accessible from the OLS Home page. The Main Menu allows you to drill down to specific items related to your student and your role as a learning coach. It provides snapshots of your student s attendance, quick links to their daily and weekly plans, progress, and links to materials they need in advance for their lessons. The Home page even provides you with quick links to K12 s community forums and notifies you if you have K-Mail waiting or any announcements to view. Tip: Return to the Home page You can return to the Home page at any time by clicking Home from the Main Menu. 20

21 K-Mail and Announcements To Access K-mail You can select K-Mail from the Main Menu or from the K-Mail and Announcements section on the Home page. 1. Select K-Mail 2. Select Inbox OR 21

22 1. Roll over the K-Mail section of the Home page to get a summary of what K-Mails you have in your inbox. 2. Click in the K-Mail and Announcements Section Your K-Mail inbox will open. 22

23 The OLS Home page also notifies you of announcements from your school and K12. To Access Announcements You can access your announcements from the Main Menu or from the K-Mail and Announcements section of the Home page. 1. Click the Community icon from the Main Menu 2. Select Announcements 23

24 OR 1. Click in the Announcements section of the K-Mail and Announcements Section on the Home page. The Announcement window will open, where you can scroll through all of your announcements. 24

25 To View Today s Announcements 1. Select the downward arrow to the right of Show Me in the Announcements window. 2. Select Today s Announcements to view the announcements for the day. The announcement list will refresh with only today s announcements. Note: You can view a single announcement by selecting read more under a specific announcement in the K-Mail and Announcements section. 25

26 Planning Your Student s Schedule The OLS makes it simple to plan your student s daily and weekly schedule. First you must setup your student s weekly plan. You will use your student s Daily and Weekly plans to view what lessons need to be done for each day. To Set Up Your Student s Schedule 1. Select Plan from the Main Menu 2. Select Schedule Setup The schedule setup window opens.. The scheduler lets you set up the selected student s days off, create their weekly plan for their courses or show or hide certain courses. 3. Select the Plan Tab 26

27 The first time you open the plan tab, the chart defaults to a recommended weekly schedule based on a 180 day teaching year. 4. Create your student s weekly schedule. If this schedule meets your needs, you can save this schedule. If it does not, you can change the number of lessons scheduled for a course on a given day. For example,, you can change the schedule to teach Math on Mondays and Literature on Wednesdays by entering 5 lessons for Math on Monday and 5 lessons for Literature on Wednesday. 27

28 When you are finished creating your student s schedule you can calculate the projected end dates for each of your student s courses based on the schedule you created. 5. Select the Calculate button. If you are happy with the schedule you created for your student you can save it. 6. Click the Save button to make this your student s weekly schedule. Once you have created your student's weekly schedule, you can schedule their days off for the year. Schedule Days Off 1. Select Plan from the Main Menu 2. Select Schedule Setup 3. Select Days Off Tab Note: The Days Off tab displays by default. The tab opens with an editable calendar open to the current month. Any day off will be highlighted in yellow. Your student s days off will be listed on the Days Off schedule on the right hand side of the tab. You can determine your student s days off or use the school calendar. 28

29 4. Determine your Student s Days Off for the School Year To Add a Day Off: : click on a date in the calendar. To Remove a Day Off: : click on a highlighted date in the calendar. 5. Select Save to apply your student s vacation days to their school year. Once you have finished setting up your student s schedule, the OLS adjusts its notifications to meet this schedule. You will receive notifications of advance prep required for lessons as well as be provided with quick links to all the course materials and resources you will need to guide your student through their school day from the OLS Home page. 29

30 Daily Notifications Today s To Do List The Today s To Do List section of the OLS Home page gives you a quick snapshot of your student(s) attendance and what advance prep they need to complete before they begin their lessons. Attendance You must enter attendance each school day to ensure that your student s work is being counted by their school. The number of days missing from your student s attendance is displayed and updated each day in the Today s To do List. The To Do List Attendance missing days counter is a reminder to enter attendance. To Access Your Student s Attendance 1. Select Attendance from your To Do List 30

31 OR 1. Select Plan from the Main Menu 2. Select Attendance The attendance window opens. 31

32 3. Enter the minutes your student spent on each course per day for their attendance. Notes: If they did not work on a certain course, enter zero minutes for that course. Select Auto-Enter and choose to zero in all the empty spaces in your student s attendance. When you first click in the Enter Time field the default number of minutes automatically fills in to make it easier for you. You may edit the default time provided. 32

33 TIP : Enter Attendance for a Day Off If your student took a day off from school, use the Auto-Enter drop-down down to automatically fill zeroes in for all courses to let the school know your student didn't attend school that day. 4. Select Save once you are finished entering time for your student s day. Note: You can edit attendance you ve entered for the day until midnight that evening. Any attendance you ve entered before today cannot be edited. To Switch between Multiple Student s Attendance Records 1. Select the downward arrow to the right of your student s name 2. Select the other student whose attendance you wish to view That student s attendance record will now be displayed. 33

34 Advance Prep Some lessons require preparation to be done in advance, such as putting together a model to demonstrate a historical concept or planting seeds for a science experiment. This type of preparation is called Advance Prep and can be required sometimes as much as a week before a lesson is to be taken. To Access Your Student s Advance Prep 1. Select Advance Prep from your To Do List OR 1. Select Plan from the Main Menu 2. Select Advance Prep for Today 34

35 The OLS provides lesson shortcuts for each of your student s below your daily To Do List. 35

36 My Students Lesson Shortcuts You can access shortcuts to your student s daily and weekly plans, track their progress, and access their courses here. You can access their daily or weekly plan from here or from Plan on the Main Menu. Please note, that if you have one student their lesson shortcut area will look very different. 36

37 Daily Plan The Daily Plan shows all of the lessons scheduled for the current day for your student. For each scheduled lesson, the Daily Plan provides: A description of each lesson by course Whether the class is online or offline Assessment Status Completion Status Advance Prep for today s lessons To Access Your Student s Daily Plan 1. Select Daily Plan from beneath your student s name in the My Students section on the Home page OR 1. Select Plan from the Main Menu 2. Select your Student 3. Select Daily Plan Note: If you have more than one student, you can view all of your student(s) daily plans by selecting daily plan from the Plan menu. 37

38 Your student s plan page will open to their daily plan. You can access their daily or weekly plan from here. 38

39 Your student s daily plan provides a schedule of the lessons your student is to complete for the day. The quick links box will provide you with a link to any materials you will need for this day s lessons. Note: If you don t complete a lesson on the day it is scheduled, the lesson will move forward on the schedule until you mark it complete. If you are teaching more than one student, you may view your students daily plans singularly or an overview of all your students daily plans. 39

40 To View Multiple Students Daily Plans 1. Select Plan from the Main Menu 2. Select Daily Plan A list of all of your students daily plans will display. To Switch between Multiple Students Daily Plans 1. Select the downward arrow to the right of your student s name 2. Select the other student who s plan you wish to view That student s daily plan will now be displayed. 40

41 Weekly Plan The Weekly Plan shows all of the lessons scheduled for the current week for your student. For each scheduled lesson, the Weekly Plan provides a link to the course, and the Quick Links box provides links to course materials and any advance prep for the week s lessons. To Access Your Student s Weekly Plan 1. Select Weekly Plan from beneath your student s name in the My Students section on the Home page OR 1. Select Plan from the Main Menu 2. Select your Student 3. Select Weekly Plan 41

42 Your student s plan screen will open to their weekly plan. 42

43 In this example, Sophie s weekly plan provides an interactive weekly plan for all of her course s lessons. Note: The advance prep is listed below the course schedule for each day. You can access specific lessons by selecting any of the linked lesson titles from your student s weekly plans, or by selecting weekly plan from the My Students section on the OLS Home page. Lessons Each course your student is taking will have a list of lessons they must complete for the school year. The OLS provides a lesson list for each unit of a course. Access Your Student s Lesson List for a Specific Course 1. Select Courses from the My Students section of the OLS Home page. 2. Select a course, such as Math Plus Blue Your student s lesson list for that course opens. Note: The Lesson List tab displays by default. 43

44 Decoding Your Student s Lesson List In your student s lesson list you will see a number of symbols that describe the lesson and correspond to your student s progress in that lesson. The first column shows whether it s an adaptive lesson. The second column shows whether it s an adult guided lesson. The third column shows whether it s online. The fourth column shows whether there is any advance prep required to complete the lesson. The fifth column 44

45 shows whether there is an assessment for the lesson. The sixth and final column displays the completion status for the lesson s assessment. A description of all the symbols you may see in your student s lesson list is detailed in the table below. Symbol Description Adaptive Lesson Adult Guided Online Lesson Skipped Not Complete Almost Complete Completed An adaptive lesson adapts to your child s abilities as the progress through a lesson. Lessons that need to be taught by an adult are indicated on the Plan by the adult icon. In grades Kindergarten through 3, all lessons will be marked by this icon as K 3 students must be taught by an adult. In grades 4 and 5, some of the classes are adultguided; others are self-directed. After grade 5, all lessons are self-directed. This is a lesson that must be completed online. This symbol denotes that your student skipped this lesson s assessment. This symbol denotes that your student has not completed this lesson. This symbol denotes your student s level of completion for a lesson. For example, 70% mastered. This symbol denotes that your student has completed this lesson. 45

46 The OLS Home and the Daily Plan pages provide direct access to the online lessons, the assessments, and lesson status. To Access Your Student s Most Recent Lesson 1. Select Lessons from the My Students section of the OLS Home page 2. Select a course The most current lesson for your student in that course opens. 46

47 In this case, Scott s most current lesson for Math Plus Orange is Unit 1, Lesson 3: Write Numerals through 500. Note: Some lessons are offline,, such as Phonics in Kindergarten and 1st grade and Language Arts in grades 3 5. These lessons are available in printed form and may have been shipped to you. The titles are listed in the Plan, but the lessons themselves are available only in printed documents. You can print, get help, offer feedback, navigate the lesson s activities and assessments, and close the lesson from the left hand menu. 47

48 Assessments Assessments are a key part of K12's mastery-based curriculum. Most lessons have assessments, which may be online, offline, or a combination of both. Links to assessments, as well as mastery scores, appear next to lesson information. The column farthest to the right shows the lesson s completion status. To Access A Lesson Assessment 1. Select the lesson s assessment from your student s lesson list 48

49 OR 1. Select the lesson assessment while you are in a lesson 2. Select Begin or Go to the Next Screen 3. Print the Assessment for your student to complete offline. 4. Enter your student s answers to the assessment online 5. Click the Submit button. Your student s assessment will be submitted to their teacher. You can print any assessment, allowing your student to work offline at their own pace. You can also configure the printer friendly copy of the assessment to meet your student s specific learning needs. To Print Your Student s Lesson Assessments 1. Select Print from the left hand menu. 49

50 The print assessment window will open. You can choose to the print the screen you are on or the entire assessment. In this example, we are going to print the entire assessment. 2. Select Print entire assessment and then select OK. A new window will open with a printer friendly version of the assessment. 50

51 3. Click the Print Assessment button. The print dialog box will open. 4. Configure your print selection and select Print. The lesson s assessment will print. Tip: Trouble Printing an assessment? First, check what internet browser you are using. If you are using Firefox as your internet browser, please close and reopen the lesson using Internet Explorer. Try to print the lesson again. Some lessons cannot be printed in their entirety using Firefox. 51

52 Preparation The OLS will notify you in multiple places when a lesson requires advance preparation and what materials you will need for a specific lesson. Get Ready with Advance Prep At times your student s lessons will require advance preparation. You can view your student s advance prep for each day, week, unit, or lesson. Advance Prep for the Day When your student s lesson requires advance preparation for the day, you will see the advance prep alarm clock appear in your To Do List on the OLS Home page. 1. Select Advance Prep from your Today s To Do List A window will open with a list of all the advance preparation materials for your student. Your student s daily and weekly plans will list your student s advance prep for each day. 52

53 Advance Prep for the Week You can view the advance prep materials for the week by selecting the downward arrow to the right of View in the advance prep window and select Week. The Advance Prep list will now include all of the materials you will need for your student for the week. You can also view advance prep for a certain course by unit. Advance Prep For the Unit You can view the advance preparation for any of the lessons in a specific unit by selecting the Advance Prep tab. 53

54 Advance Prep for Each Lesson The OLS will also notify you if you need advance prep per lesson in your student s lesson lists. You will see the advance prep alarm clock symbol if a specific lesson requires advance prep. Note: This symbol is not a link. It serves as a notification that there is advance prep required for this lesson. Select the Advance Prep tab on the lesson list for this unit to view the advance prep. 54

55 Now that we have covered all the different ways the OLS notifies you that advance prep is required for a lesson, please note that you can also print the advance prep for your student s lessons. Note: To print your student s daily advance prep list, see Printing in the OLS. Materials I ll Need For each school day your student will have a list of materials, either supplied or that you can print, in order to complete their lessons for that day. To Access Your Student s Course Materials When you are in your student s daily or weekly plan screen you will see the Materials I ll Need link in the Quick Links box. This link will take you to the course materials for your student for the current day / week. 1. Select Materials I ll Need from the Quick Links box A window opens with the list of materials you ll need for your student s lessons for the day. 55

56 You can also print out or review what materials your student will need for the week. To View Your Student s Course Materials for the Week 1. Select the downward arrow to the right of the View 2. Select Week That student s materials for the week will now be displayed. If you have more than one student, you can switch between your student s plan pages so you can access your other student s course materials list. 56

57 To Switch between Multiple Student s Materials 1. Select the downward arrow to the right of your student s name 2. Select the other student who s materials you wish to view That student s materials for the day will now be displayed. You can also print out the materials for the day as a list and whatever specific materials you will need, see Printing Your Student s Course Materials. 57

58 Progress Once your student begins their lessons, you can view and track their progress in each course. To View Your Student s Progress for their Courses You can view your student s progress in their courses by selecting Progress under their name in My Students. 1. Select the Progress link under your Student s t s name in the My Students section on the Home page. Your student s progress will display for each of their courses. 58

59 You will see a progress bar with a percentage below it for each of your student s courses. On the right hand side of the progress screen are a set of checkboxes where you can customize how your student s progress is displayed. You can view your student s optional lessons, calculate the projected end dates for their courses due to their current progress, or show your student s hidden courses progress. You can also see a more detailed view of your student s progress in a specific course. To View Your Student s Progress for a Specific Course You can view a more detailed breakdown of your student s progress in a single course. 1. Select any of the linked courses in the progress screen course overview. OR 1. Select Progress from the Main Menu 59

60 2. Select your Student 3. Select a course you wish to view your student s progress in You will be taken to that course s progress screen. 60

61 All the lessons in a course that your student has to complete can be measured as complete, not mastered, not completed, or skipped. The total course progress is shown across the top of the page in a bar graph. The percentage shown above the bar graph is the percentage of lessons your student has completed. The numbers shown within the bar graph show the number of lessons that have been completed, not mastered, skipped, or are yet to be completed. Below the progress bar, the course lessons are divided into completed, not mastered, not completed, and skipped tabs. The number of lessons that are in each tab are listed to the right of the tab title. For example, the number of lessons this student has completed is shown in the bar graph and in the completed tab title. In this example, there are 54 lessons that have been completed as shown to the right of the Completed tab title and the course progress bar shows 54 lessons have been completed. While this student has 0 lessons yet to be mastered and has to complete 12 of the total 66 lessons for the course. 61

62 To View Multiple Students Progress 1. Select Progress from the Main Menu 2. Select Progress from the drop down menu All of your students progress in each of their courses will be displayed. A list divided by student name listing the progress in each of their courses. The OLS provides you with three ways to print your students plans, lessons, and corresponding assessments. 62

63 Printing in the OLS To Print Your Student s Daily or Weekly Plans and Attendance For these materials you will see a print icon in the shape of a printer. Printing Your Student s Daily Plan You can print your student s daily plan. 1. Select Print Daily Plan The print dialog box will open. 2. Configure your print selection and select Print. You student s daily plan will print. 63

64 Printing Your Student s Attendance You can print your student s daily attendance. 1. Select Print Attendance The print dialog box will open. 2. Configure your print selection and select Print. The lesson s assessment will print. 64

65 To Print the Advance Preparation or Course Materials For these materials you will see a print button or a print option from a menu. Printing Your Student s Advance Prep You can print your student s daily or weekly advance prep list. 1. Select the Day or Week View 65
