Executive Summary for the 2014 Atlanta Region Demand Overview and Targeted Industry Workforce Trends Overview: The need for real time labor market information in the Atlanta Region led the Atlanta Regional Commission, Atlanta Career Rise, and Metro Atlanta Chamber to form a consortium to purchase a license to access Burning Glass Labor Insight, a real time labor data tool. Atlanta Regional Commission staff led the efforts, with support from Burning Glass International, to analyze and collect data on all advertised job openings in identified strategic industry sectors. Through a sophisticated algorithm, Burning Glass extracts key data from electronic job postings, eliminates duplicates, and processes the raw information into a powerful online database. With access to this database, the consortium can assess demand for talent across hundreds of standard and custom industry sectors, inventorying the skills requested/ required to fill job postings and the changes in criteria over time.

Geographical Areas Covered in the Report: Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) see map of 28 counties in the MSA, Other (Competing) MSAs, Nation.

Industry Sectors Covered in the Report: Computer IT (BA+ and BA-) Software Development (including BA-) Wireless Mobility Internet Security Digital Media and Gaming Financial Transactions Processing Health IT Software Development Supply Chain Management & Software Supply Chain Distribution Services Hospitality Healthcare (BA+ and BA-) All Manufacturing (BA+ and BA-) Advanced Manufacturing Biotech (BA+ and BA-) Significant Findings in the Report: Overall job postings in the Atlanta region d 83% between 2007 and 2013, twice the rate of national postings. The Atlanta region s postings in a number of target industries---internet Security, Wireless Mobility, and Health IT Software---grew at a faster percentage rate than postings for the overall economy. Digital Media & Gaming with 24,000 postings and Software Development with 22,000 postings led the Atlanta region s higher tech industry in 2013. The Atlanta region generally ranks within or just below the top 10 metros for job growth from 2007 to 2013 in target industries. It ranks in the top 5 for supply chain logistics and supply chain management. In general, the Atlanta region s area postings growth in the high-tech target sectors was only behind either larger metro areas such as New York, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles or traditional high-tech hubs like as San Francisco and San José. Atlanta is almost invariably a leader in the Southeast and a close competitor to the Dallas MSA. A background in Oracle, SQL, or Java goes a very long way in terms of qualifying candidates to fill job postings in a large number of the target industry sectors. The most requested certifications were Microsoft and Cisco. Requests for persons with the skill clusters of Software and Programming, Web Design, and Databases & Data Warehousing predominate in higher-tech industry groups. Requested baseline skills almost always include Communication Skills, Writing, Problem Solving/ Troubleshooting, and Organizational Skills. Within the higher tech target sectors, a majority of postings ask for a bachelor s degree or more. However, many postings across sectors do not list minimum educational requirements. In Biotech (30%), Health IT Software (50%), and Healthcare (70 %+), bachelors degrees are not required for a significant share of postings.

The full report includes a year s worth (plus historical data back to 2007) of job postings in metro Atlanta s targeted high-tech and growth sectors AND: How Atlanta s job postings compare to other U.S. metro areas over multiple timeframes A listing of the top job titles within each target sector A listing of the top employers that published the openings Information on the certifications required, Top specialized and general skills, with skill clusters; spotlights on SQL and Oracle where relevant Education requirements (when specified by the posting) Breakouts (where relevant for the target sector) of the number of and characteristics of postings that require a bachelor s degree or more versus those requiring a high school or associate s degree Limited data (within certain sectors) on salaries for postings Timeline and Data Vintage: The consortium purchased the Burning Glass Labor Insight license in July 2014. The staff work for this project occurred from August through December 2014. The data in the report are from the full years of 2007, 2010, and 2013, as well as for the last 12 months. Last 12 months was defined for the initial report (late October) as August 2013 - August 2014. Additional analysis took place post-october, therefore the last 12 months are in some cases defined as November 2013 to November 2014 and December 2013 to December 2014. Report Data Products Available The complete report, with all project analyses and findings across all selected target sectors studied, is available via the Atlanta Regional Workforce Board web page: http://www.atlantaregional.com/file%20library/workforce/2014_atlanta_region_demand_overview_ and_targeted_industry_workforce_trends.pdf ARC Research and Analytics staff will make efforts to assist those interested in Burning Glass data. However, potential fulfillment of custom requests for additional data extracts will be reviewed in the context of the licensing agreement for the software. In general, the consortium is unable to provide extensive data downloads from Burning Glass for areas outside the ARC region or for entities not part of the consortium service group.
