What is Burning Glass- Labor Insight? Burning Glass Labor Insight is a real time labor data tool. Burning Glass extracts key data from electronic job postings, eliminates duplicates, and processes the raw information into an online database. We are able to access this technology through our partnership with the Metro Atlanta Chamber and CareerRise Through this technology, we are able to determine the most in-demand occupations, skill sets, educational requirements, certifications and more for many different geographies. For this snapshot, we will focus on the Atlanta MSA.
Looking Into The Burning Glass Reflective of the new economy, Software Developer is the most in-demand occupation in Metro Atlanta, ranking in the top 10 of all MSAs in total postings. The majority of these jobs require at least a bachelor s degree. The second most in-demand occupation in metro Atlanta is Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers, an old economy job that is still very much in demand. Only 23 percent of Truck Driving job postings require a college degree. Over the past 12 months, there have been 266,000 postings that require at least a Bachelor s degree and 198,000 postings that require an Associate s Degree or less.
Top Postings per 10,000 people employed within the last 6 months Denver San Francisco Phoenix Seattle Washington Chicago Boston Dallas Detroit 2,653 2,605 2,367 2,262 2,221 2,111 2,037 1,902 1,812 New York Atlanta Philadelphia Los Angeles Miami Houston 1,718 1,688 1,543 1,491 1,346 1, th ,000 1,500 2,000 2,500 3,000 Overall, metro Atlanta ranks 11 th in total postings per 10,000 people employed in the last six months. We will get a closer look at the top posting industries, the most in-demand occupations in metro Atlanta, and the skillsets required to qualify for those jobs.
Top Industries in Metro Atlanta Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services 15,374 Hospitals 10,719 Ambulatory Health Care Services Insurance Carriers and Related Activities 6,994 6,446 Administrative and Support Services Educational Services Credit Intermediation and Related Activities Food Services and Drinking Places Accommodation Truck Transportation 4,897 4,556 4,238 4,199 4,186 4, ,000 4,000 6,000 8,000 10,000 12,000 14,000 16,000 18,000 The top industries in Metro Atlanta is the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services sector, which, in general, consist of high-skilled, highly technical jobs. Other top industries include Hospitals and Ambulatory Health Care Services, which mirrors the trend of increasing strength in health care related occupations. However, despite the technical nature of some these industries, employers are looking for both high and low skilled positions.
Top Occupations in Metro Atlanta Software Developers, Applications 12,531 Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers Registered Nurses 7,523 7,181 Retail Salespersons Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Computer Systems Analysts First-Line Supervisors of Retail Sales Workers Managers, All Other Business Intelligence Analysts Customer Service Representatives 5,105 4,995 3,980 3,270 3,161 3,138 2, ,000 4,000 6,000 8,000 10,000 12,000 14,000 Occupations better reflect the demand of the labor market, because these occupations could be in any industry. As the chart illustrates, Software Developers lead the pack in most posted job openings in metro Atlanta over the past 12 months, by far. Following behind Software Developers are Truck Drivers, which reflects metro Atlanta s position as a transportation and logistics hub. We are able to see, however, that there is a wide spectrum of job openings among the top four occupations in metro Atlanta that will be discussed later.
Top Skills in Metro Atlanta Accounting Sales SQL Oracle Repair JAVA Scheduling Business Development Collaboration Mathematics 8,607 8,586 8,539 8,067 7,169 7,128 6,917 11,893 11,723 13, ,000 4,000 6,000 8,000 10,000 12,000 14,000 16,000 Burning Glass also offers the ability to determine the top skills requested in job postings. This information is critical to economic and workforce development professionals. It allows workforce training programs to understand exactly what the most desired skills are in metro Atlanta. Programs can then use this knowledge to train more workers to compete for these positions. As the chart shows, many of the top skills that employers need are new economy, technologybased skills, with computer programming/web development languages like SQL, Oracle, JAVA and the like. But old economy skills are still need too, with Accounting and Sales topping the list.
Software Developers, Applications: Skills JAVA SQL JavaScript.NET Programming Microsoft C# Software Engineering Extensible Markup Language (XML) Oracle SQL Server LINUX 3,762 3,103 2,505 2,504 2,475 2,249 2,176 1,823 1,744 4, ,000 1,500 2,000 2,500 3,000 3,500 4,000 4,500 The skills needed for Software Developer jobs are highly technical and require extremely specialized skills. As suspected, software developers must have knowledge of a variety of coding languages and programming skills. These data allows workforce training programs to tailor their offerings to get more workers eligible to compete in this booming occupation.
