3 Executive Summary of the Local Labor Market Data This quarter, the Louisville area job market continued its strongest showing in ten years. The unemployment rate for June 2015 was 4.7 percent compared to 6.1 percent in June s were most plentiful in healthcare, technology, logistics and sales. By far the greatest number of high-wage jobs were available in the Lifelong Wellness & Aging/ Health Enterprises industry cluster, which includes registered nurses, doctors and therapists, and in the Information Technology sector, where software applications developers were in particular demand. Also showing second-quarter growth were job opportunities in sales, with more than 600 positions posted. Education remains a very important factor in the labor market. Some 78 percent of the top 30 jobs that pay above the living wage ($36,795) typically require some postsecondary education, although some of these postsecondary awards can be credentials, such as a Commercial Driver s License (CDL), that take as little as four weeks to obtain. Tractor-trailer truck drivers, part of the Logistics & E-Commerce sector, were the overall most sought-after employees in the second quarter with more than 2,000 job postings. CDL graduates may be able to land one of these jobs with annual wages starting around $33,000. Detailed career pathways charts show six target industry clusters by online job postings as well as the education levels and wage ranges for each of the job categories. The charts provide job seekers, employers, students and families with useful and current employment data and analysis that can be used to plan areas of study or training, determine career goals and learn more about the regional labor market. New to this report are charts showing the local labor force participation rate and median wages over the last ten years. The labor force participation rate the proportion of the overall population that is working or looking for work has been declining nationally for about ten years, only stabilizing in the last year around 63 percent. Reasons for the decline include Baby Boomer retirements and the impact of the recent recession (people laid off or unable to find work who left the workforce, or people who simply never entered it). The report shows, however, that the local labor force participation has not followed national trends. Instead of a steady decline, the Louisville area has experienced ups and downs, with a slight uptick overall. This report also adds new information regarding the wage-growth potential for jobs in the Information Technology and Food & Beverage industry clusters. 3

The bottom bar in each job field group is the number of online job postings for that field in June This number will include duplications, as employers re-post jobs they have a hard time filling. However, this number does give us an idea of where the highest job demand is and which jobs employers are having the hardest time filling. And, from that standpoint, Computer Occupations are clearly the job field most in demand or which employers are having the hardest time filling. Healthcare Practitioners and Business Operations Specialists follow in second place and third place, respectively. 4

Industries can have any number of different occupations within them. For example, Health Care & Social Assistance includes Nurses, IT professionals and Custodians. However, because this classification system originated in 1937, the categories can be awkward in today s economy. For example, Information refers not to Information Technology, but to sub-industries such as Telecommunications, Motion Pictures, Publishing (print) and Data Processing. In other words, these industry groups are much better at classifying traditional industries, such as manufacturing, than new industries such as IT. 19

In this chart, median wages adjusted for inflation, which also have been stubbornly down, are shown. Median wages are generally better at capturing a broader swath of the public, whereas average wages can be skewed by trends at the top or the bottom. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer is now using median wages to measure progress on his goal to raise Louisville s wages. 20

21 Sources and Methodology: KentuckianaWorks used data based on online job postings aggregated by Burning Glass Labor/Insight to understand labor market demand for different jobs and skills in the workforce of the 12-county Louisville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Burning Glass gathers data from multiple online sources, including major job posting sites, and employer-specific job boards. Burning Glass then removes duplicate results. We have discounted the Burning Glass numbers by 20 percent to account for jobs that may not have been de-duplicated. postings do not guarantee the existence of an open job. Some industries, such as manufacturing, or occupations, such as welders, may be particularly prone to underrepresentation in online job postings data, meaning the real demand may be higher. Similarly, some employers may post continuous listings for positions they do not intend to fill in the near term. Thus, while Burning Glass provides the best available data, it does not provide a complete representation of the job market. KentuckianaWorks used Economic Modeling Specialist Intl. s Analyst tool (EMSI Analyst) for local data on the number of jobs, median and percentile wages, typical entry-level education for jobs, the composition of jobs within industry clusters, occupational age demographics (to gauge possible retirements), and projected ten-year job growth. EMSI Analyst draws data from multiple sources, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau s American Community Surveys, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and its own proprietary models. KentuckianaWorks annualized data for the median annual wage by assuming 2,080 hours of work during a year. For the living-wage threshold, KentuckianaWorks used the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Living Wage Calculator s 2013 living wage for a family of two adults and two children without childcare in Jefferson County, Kentucky. That number was $36,795. The Top High-Demand and High-Wage job fields were developed by creating composite ranking that takes Burning Glass job postings and EMSI Analyst projected growth/possible retirements into account. Possible retirements come from the number of people in a job field who are 55 or older. Both criteria were ranked separately, then the average ranking was used as a composite score. Composite scores were ranked to create the Top 15 list. To be considered high-wage, a field must have a median annual wage of at least $36,795. The Information Technology and Food and Beverage Wage Potential charts were developed using the 10th, 25th, median, 75th and 90th annual wage percentiles for each occupation. This information is from EMSI Analyst. The top occupations by the number of jobs within each industry were chosen to be included in the visualization. The number of jobs for each occupation within the Food and Beverage category was based on a staffing pattern from EMSI Analyst using the North American Industry Classification System, or NAICS, industry clusters for Food Manufacturing and Food and Accommodation. IT jobs do not have their own NAICS industry codes and can span across different industries, so these numbers were pulled based on the occupations themselves. The unemployment rate is based on the number of people looking for work who could not find work; it does not count people who are not looking for work. The most recent data available for the unemployment rate was for June This rate was not seasonally adjusted. Seasonal adjustments account for job increases due to phenomena such as summer hiring at amusement parks or holiday hiring at distribution centers. Unadjusted data should be compared only to the same month in previous years, not previous months in the same year. Therefore, this report shows unemployment rates in every June from The data comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS). The Labor Force participation rate was calculated by dividing the annual average size of the labor force from the BLS LAUS by the size of the civilian population, 16 years and older. The size of the population is taken from the American Community Survey. The size of the labor force is the number of people working or looking for work. The most recent data is from June Again, to avoid seasonal fluctuations, the current size of the labor force is compared using every June Data for the median annual wages adjusted for inflation is from the BLS Annual Occupational Employment Statistics, released yearly in May. Adjustments are based on the BLS Inflation Calculator, which calculates the rate of inflation using the Consumer Price Index. 21
